Player James Maddison

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Have to give credit to Maddison for issuing that statement in the way that he did. It would have been easy to issue some banal nonsense that never really said anything. Instead, he admits to being genuinely gutted over his squad omission, while acknowledging that his own performances over the latter part of the season have not been up to scratch or to the standards he sets for himself. A lot of big ego players wouldn’t have done that.

He probably doesn’t deserve to go based on his recent performances and with the level of competition he has for his place, he’d struggle for minutes. As others have said though, and I agree, I don’t think there is much love lost between Madders and Southgate and it doesn’t help Madders in the short term, that Southgate is still a prick.

Dude was playing the long game
The geezer has never been selected to play Snr level for his country in his life. Because of this he then grovelled to Argentina to select him because his Gran is half Argentinian - they blanked him there too.

I do find arseholes like this really, really weird.

It's how these things work, the smaller less successful person always retains an advantage because there's not much they can do to be mocked but there is plenty the more successful person can do that can be laughed at.

If only bentancur had been afforded the minutes week in week out that maddison got once returning. If he wasn't ready then for the team he should declare himself not ready. I think you are making an excuse for him and being too lenient suggesting he played how he played the whole time he came back purely due to an injury. He was 100% fit in that run in imo and he was anonymous. He had 4 months or so to improve his form and he didn't. If that really was because of the injury and he wasn't ready then he definitely does still need to look in the mirror at his selfishness that contributed to our disastrous run in form at the end of the season. We've all had injuries while playing sports and yes you ease yourself back in but 4 months down the line there should absolutely be an improvement in your game and there wasn't in maddison. I put it down to mentality more than the injury in the back end of the season.
Bentacur wasn't ready, it's been confirmed by Ange that perhaps he wasn't ready. Players want to play, if the motivation is right in the team all they want to do is help out the team by playing.

ALL (there are few exceptions) struggle to return to a previous level following ligament injuries that's seen them miss nearly 3 months of football.

Who are these players that play at the same level following a serious injury? Honestly I can only think of possibly Kane and there will be a massive argument to suggest that he wasn't at the same level by many (his thread post-injury will attest to this). I'm asking this because I genuinely do not understand how anyone could have this level of expectation as it's based on nothing.

Yeah he's never like Maddison.

Took him to get near KDB-level numbers to get a sniff and then was barely used.
I do think Maddison offers something quite unique - it's only really Foden I would class as similar.

Madz shot himself in the foot years ago when he was caught out on the raz when he'd pulled out of the squad.

I think Southgate likes him. He took him to the World Cup(??) knowing he was injured (knee), he wanted him with the squad as he was desperately training hard to regain his fitness, although it was touch and go if he would make it.

If he don’t buck up his ideas he won’t be getting in to our team
soon ,he didn’t deserve to go to the euros been terrible for months.he can have full pre season then no excuses next season .

Don’t profess to know where it originated from, but seems to have been commonly reported that there had been issues between the two of them, whatever they may have been.

SSN stated earlier that Southgate had kept him in the WC squad previously, despite his injury, because he was a popular member of the group and had been a great morale booster for his team mates. TBH, who knows? So much bollocks reported on this it doesn’t really matter. The decision not to include him was probably right and hopefully he can use the summer to regain full fitness.
