Don't obsess over the value of the transfer fee for a player.

All our competitors routinely spend +£60m on almost all of their players now!! We have revenues bigger than all bar 3 of them now, so we are now swimming in the lane we have always aspired to, this is what it looks like.

If you want to focus on "value" then that's on what we pay them on wages. This is where the danger is if the player isn't any good, as they can sit on your books on inflated salaries and no one else can afford to take him off your hands (every club is littered with these mistakes). Transfer values are amortised over the contracts meaning future transfer fees can easily be obtained but only if the salaries can be afforded by the new club (and they rarely are). And our expertise has been to keep our salaries at a base way lower than our competitors, in fact, we have the best wage-to-revenue % in the division.

Spending £30m-£40m on an 18yr old (Archie Gray) for example means that by the time he's 22 with a year left on his contract, he stands us in at £8m!! This is the same across all the young players we've signed recently and as they are young I'm assuming that their wages are "relatively low" (I'd be surprised they are above £100k per week).

Eze is in a different bracket, he's 26 so likely his next move is to be his last in the top flight, his wage demands are likely to also be high as a result but as he's at palace I assume they are still affordable for us, coupled with a buyout clause that requires this to be paid upfront means this is a huge investment. And because of PSR that makes us one of about only 2 or 3 clubs that could entertain this deal. It also means that despite all the press noise surrounding him Palace do not have a queue of Clubs competitively fighting over his signature, which is actually very bad for Palace, who would love to sell him if they want to continue investing in the squad (he's 26 - approaching his maximum value but with 2yrs remaining on his contract - currently stands them in on their books at £6m), right now Palace position is to say he's not for sale (as we did with Bale), whilst secretly keeping their collective fingers crossed one of the 2/3 clubs blink and make a move for him.

I love the fact we are linked with him and the likes of Williams, Neto, Doue etc I'd happily see any of these at Spurs with probably Eze being the most expensive option when you take his age, wage and upfront lump fee need to be paid (bet that can be chipped away at if we really are one of a couple of clubs sniffing). We offloaded a lot of players already, some that have been on massive wages (Ndombele, Kane, Lloris, Peresic all on approx £200k pw, with Dier, Sess, Sanchez, Winks, Moura and soon-to-be Reggie, Royal & PEH all on competitive wages with Rodon, Tanganga & Spence on smaller wages) I think we can afford to roll the dice on a player if those within the club think he can come in a fit the system but might turn to shit under the Tottenham "expensive hires jinx".
Good post and within it is the reason we won’t be getting Nico Williams. He is currently on 200k pew week at Bilbao and wants more. His wage demands are the reason Barcelona have pulled out of pursuing him. How much would Eze be after? He is on 100k. He Would probably be happy with 120 pw.
so EZE is 68 mil to buy plus say $120k pw vs Williams who will cost 49 mil to buy but wants over 200k pw.
Over 5 years Eze will be cheaper. The two main differences are Eze transfer fee is up front and he’s 26 v Williams 21.

that being said one is a winger the other AM

exactly.

If he has been identified as the player to improve us then pay it.

I don’t want Neto, too injury prone. Also can we stop comparing Doue, Neto and Eze.
Eze is AM the other two play out wide.
I‘d like to see us get Doue and Eze as well as a striker

exactly.

1. Fully agree that we need the club to have the conviction to pay for the best players of they feel it improves us.

2. If Levy and Munn have give Lange and Ange a budget to work with, I can see why they might spend it on 2 players instead of 1.

Not an easy decision. Think choices like that always look easier for a player like a #9 or lone #6 because they are such integral parts of a the spine down the middle of the team. Not saying don't go and get Eze bit if I was in Lange's shoes and I felt I could get Doue and Neto instead of just Eze because I could pay for the 2 in longer installments over one massive lump for Eze....I would probably do that.

Seems like we let him go on a free so they could afford to sign him. Fair play.

That's funny because we apparently had agreed a deal with Millwall which was nixed.

Than a few days ago Harris seemed to have given up.

“It’s really important that everybody understands, not just Neil Harris and his team-mates, but the whole football club is a big fan of Japhet Tanganga.

“I think I have made that clear in previous articles – I would love to work with him. Japhet is a player who will be in demand over this transfer window.
“As a football club, sometimes, we can only push as far when we go through a process which is involving individuals, agents and football clubs.

“It’s safe to say that we have pushed hard to see if Japhet is a possibility for us in this window. Where I am hugely respectful as well is that there is a lot that goes into signing a player, it’s not just involving money between clubs and agents, it becomes a lot of different scenarios.

“Family becomes a huge one. When players have options to maybe be abroad, they have to speak to them as well. There are moments in players’ careers which are hugely pivotal.

“We’re massively respectful at the early part of June, not just with Japh, but with other players as well – things have to be aligned. Of course we like Japhet, but there are lots of aspects that go into signing a player.”

Can see it getting to mid August and a deal for Toney for £25m gets done. No ITK just get the feeling it’s gone quiet on our other 9 links and reckon Brentford will start getting desperate to shift.
Wouldn’t be my first choice by any means but think he can do a job for us and would be a net contributor, and for a relatively low fee the age is less of an issue as if nothing else it may well be that one of Veliz, Parrott, Scarlett or Lankshear has a breakout over the next couple of years meaning we have a youngster ready to step up!

I’m not wholly convinced either in his ability to deliver at the highest level, or is he that much of an upgrade on who we already have? Does he replace Maddison? Johnson?

I’m convinced by what I’ve seen of both these players that they’ll have huge seasons for us, Johnson especially. So are we spending that money on depth? Big cash when we could get a big upgrade at centre forward by spending a bit more.
I'm a Johnson fan as well. Eze rarely plays on the right though.

Maddison can't get away with putting in those bum performances he put In second half of the season where he did his best ghost impersonation and Ange still continued to pick him.

I mean Toney at 25m is an absolute no brainer.

ok but the thing is it doesn't really matter if you're not convinced or if I am convinced.

If he has been identified by the DOF and Ange as a main target then we should pay it, that's my point.

The thing is I don't think he has though, I think we are being linked with him because he's a Base client and he's homegrown.

Let’s behave. Maddison was clearly not the same player after injury. Did he come back too soon? Maybe. Were there better options in the squad ? Definitely not so I won’t blame Ange for continuing to pick him. But Maddison is injury prone so we need someone who can step in.

We may well play 60+ games a season (PL, EL domestic cups), and there is no way any player, except maybe GK, will play anything like that number.

So ideally we need a squad of maybe 20 players, all good enough to be in the first team.

There's one or two positions where that's a real problem including striker - there's only a handful of top class strikers, not all of whom are available, whilst quite a few clubs want a striker including ManU, Woolwich and Chelsea, with the next level down strikers being marginal (at best) improvements on Richarlison ....... who himself may not want to move on.

So its quite likely our best option may be to buy the best forward available to us this summer and wait until next summer to buy a striker... and that's why someone like Eze is very attractive as a top class forward who gets plenty of goals/assists is versatile to play LW and CM plus HG. And if Parrott shines in preseason he may be good enough to take some pressure of Richarlison/son's minutes as CF.

Whilst I'd love a top striker in this summer, I think it unlikely we get one ...... its not the money its the lack of availability and a lot of competition. So we need to find an alternative way to build the squad
