you might have noticed the market is still dead - except for ffp avoidance schemes.

and until he's fit again even less chance of buyers.
Not to mention that you can't exactly "force" a contracted player out without some potentially serious follow on ramifications.

Other players might have reservations about joining/staying if a popular player like Richarlison is treated like dirt.

The striker has to be able to score though. If we don’t buy a striker and muddle through the season with Richy and Son as our 9 options then I guarantee those that don’t want Toney will be the same complaining by December that we aren’t attacking well enough and they’ll be the reason as striker.

I agree we need a striker.

But I see no point signing someone older than Richarlison who isn't all that much better. If we could get Toney for say 15-20m. Then yes, of course I'd take him.

But there's plenty of strikers out there who have good movement and can get on the end of chances we provide if we aren't willing to overspend.

Are you still drunk ?

I've never once experienced an Ange team thats used a striker to hold the ball up and be used to bring others into play.

They predominantly stay on the last line and press viciously. If it's a low block, they still lay on the last line and use their movement to get on the end of cut backs or the odd chance created by wingers who have committed the full back. Defoe would have been an absolute menace in this set up.

The wingers are the key to Ange ball working, not the striker.
What I don't get about takes like this is that we know from O'Keefe that we're very interested in Toney, and we also know Ange gives the sign off to all player targets. Ipso facto, Ange clearly likes Toney, and considers him a good fit for the team he wants to build.

We have been told Toney is on the list we are looking at.

That list was 6-7 players so what we don’t know is how high up that list he is and if he’s on the list just because he’s available for transfer and not shit.

that list included Isak, Gyokeres, and Openda so I’d guess Toney might even be lucky to be a top 5 striker target priority for us.

But he also "liked" Gimenez, who's a completely different fit and style to Toney.

O'Keefe doesn't mention anyone that Ange likes. He just provided a list of what people within Spurs have discussed as potential targets.

The discussion could be based on finishing ability if anything. What's Toneys movement like? Can he play on the last line successfully? If we stick him on the last line and keep him in the box, will he sniff out the space to be on the end of crosses? What's he like defending set pieces? Etc

And nothing to do with changing the way we play accommodate him, more can Toney adapt to the way we play because he can finish well

If we don't sign Toney, I am going to assume he wasn't really high up on the list nor what we were looking for in a striker. Because to me it seems like we'd have a pretty free run at him if we were really that interested.

7 teams.

Only 4 can qualify for CL.

We have cups and EL.

Injuries, fatigue, suspensions.

We play wide open football.

We need proper technical quality - especially in the final third - for this system to be successful.

Sell Richarlison, Kulu, Solomon, Emerson, Hojbjerg, Lo Celso, Gil, Skipp and get tf on with it.

Buy Tony, Neto, Eze and get tf on with it.

If we don't do this sort of thing, we will end up with nothing, AGAIN, next season.

I don't care what sort of magician Ange thinks he is; this is the REALITY of the PREM.

Quality balances out the inherent risk in the way we play.

Bergvall, Gray are very good prospects, but we now need to bring in SOLID PREM QUALITY.

A serious club with a genuine desire to win (mate), does this.

My sense in all this is Ange has realised it's not enough in this league to have a Kyogo type striker who touches the ball 5 times a game and plays on the last man, you need a proper footballer who can play with his back to goal, hold up the ball, keep possession and bring others into the game. And hence he's adjusted his striker targets accordingly.

He just played Son up top in a friendly with three strikers on the bench... I am not entirely sure he'll be changing our strikers role all that much mate.

Obviously no leaks from the club when reporters are linking us with likes of McTominay.
Richy is not the answer to the question unless the question is who might be borderline acceptable if he could stay fit, which he cannot.
Toneys stats rule him out, unless the club has not learned from past mistakes.
Let's hope a few deals are near completion behind the scenes.

Perhaps. Or perhaps it's because the strikers on the bench were all children.

We'll see. My estimation is that the plan for Son is still left wing, and we'll be bringing in a striker who can play with his back to goal. I don't see how Ange watched those games towards the end of last season and concluded that Son & Richy as our only CF options is in any way viable if we want to compete for trophies.

I'm thinking, let's trust the ones we got. When Richy is out we play Son there, at minute 70 we put Lankshear, Scarlett or Veliz on. One of those 3 will start scoring. And before Christmas, at least one of them will be ready to overtake Richys place as starter.

I think Son will ultimately be left wing also.

I also think Richarlison will stay and compete with a new striker, but I don't think they'll be signed on the basis that they can hold the ball up.

On Richarlison/Toney:

I’d sell Richarlison on a heartbeat BUT the only clubs that would pay a reasonable fee are in Saudi and the vibe is abundantly clear that he won’t go there. SO WON’T HAPPEN. I’d say we’re probably stuck with him for another year at least. We could buy an expensive striker and marginalize Richi but that comes with its own drawbacks regarding morale and optics.

I’d buy Toney (whom I regard as a minor upgrade) BUT only at a reduced price — no more than £30m or so— and I’d only offer him a 2 year contract as a placeholder for Lankshear SO HE WOULD NEVER ACCEPT under my terms. A 30-31 year old Toney is going to be an albatross and as hard to move as Richi.
