How Dry should our Powder be?

Ok so Bayern are paying 50m + add ons for him. No chance in hell Levy signed off on that. Only time will tell if we were right to step out at that price point. The scouting team were definitely meant to be keen if we believe the reports.

Edit: Maybe we also moved on because the player wanted Bayern or PSG. but even if he wanted us would we have paid 50m + addons? doubt it.

The issue with Eze is that he will play in Maddison's role. While it'd be good to have someone rotate with Maddison, for 60 million you'd expect us to strengthen our very imperfect starting XI.

Wasn't our drop off in form related to maddisons injury and his subsequent loss of form though.

I also don't see why we don't take city and Woolwich's approach and on the right occasion play two attacking midfielders either side if a holding mid to dominate possession and create opportunities

Everything’s all related though. We kept opponents interested in too many games by being profligate last season. Become more efficient in front of goal then opponents will open up and play more, giving us more opportunities to kill games off, save energy, press in bursts better, all equaling less goals conceded. We know our back five are all really good players, it’s lots of facets of our game that will tighten up the goals against column.

Actually if you look at the stats we weren't profligate - we scored basically the same as our xG predicted.

See the xG column in the image below. The green number shows how much we overperformed:

Where we need to improve is the xG itself. We created the 6th most in the league, about 7 fewer than Chelsea, 11 fewer than Newcastle. And the gap to the top three is roughly 20xG; way too much to make up by simply improving our finishing.

For me the more glaring issue is the xGA column. We conceded 68(!) xGA last season, which frankly is absurd. It's the 7th worst in the league, considerably worse than the likes of Forest, Everton, Palace. The irony is we would have conceded many more goals were it not for (1) Vicario's heroics in goal and (2) our opponents' profligate finishing.

Take a look at the gap to the best teams in the league - Woolwich should have conceded fully 37 goals fewer than us last year. This is the gap we need to make up. You can't expect to challenge for anything if you're conceding over 60 goals a season.

We pay 60m for a striker that doesn't work out and we aren't fucked...

But if we pay 80m for a striker and it doesn't work out and we are?

Makes no sense to me but then again I see it that we are fucked even if we spend 10m on a striker and it doesn't work out because I am only interested in winning.

Whatever it costs, if the striker we sign isn't good enough then we won't win and that means we are fucked regardless. I don't care what the striker costs we have to sign a really fucking good one.
Rich in the politest possible way I’m not sure what to make of all that

The common sense is to understand underperforming players that have eaten up the budget that the club can’t get rid of unless only at a loss isn’t conducive to THFC progressing

You can out your 10m striker flop and try again ….. you cant out your 80m striker flop and what’s left is an underperforming deadweight harming the club

That’s what it boils down to and that’s why as fans we question the price.

If Richy gets sold… who would even be the replacement? Jonathan David? Is he good enough of a finisher?

Dont think we are getting Gyokeres sadly…

Not fussed personally - I am of the few who seem to think that we don't even need an elite striker to play in our system, we'd create numerous chances for them regardless - Riichy scored like 12 last season and the majority of them were tap ins or close range finishes.

We do need elite or close to elite wingers though.

I get where you are coming from. I guess what I'm saying is that it depends on what you are more worried about risking.

The 60m and 80m striker are both difficult to get out of. If you look at Lukaku maybe the 80m striker is even easier to get out of than the 60m striker because they had more reputation.

Anyway, I digress good sir. My point is that there is also a risk in signing a worse player and not winning. The challenge of a bad buy impacting future budgets is one for the club to work out. As a fan I am concerned by seeing my team win and signing bad players prevents us from doing that. The amount it costs is irrelevant to me. That's also the reason i wasn't bothered by Gray being expensive because I had watched him and IMO we were signing a good player.

I’m glad you don’t control our club’s finances!! 😂

N’Dombele and Lo Celso! I don’t think we need to say anymore than that do we?! 😁
