How Dry should our Powder be?

Part of the question of the cost of players, for me, is what is the club trying to achieve.

I assume the purpose of any purchase is to strengthen the squad and enhance our chances of winning trophies. I further assume it is not for the purposes of an investment. By that, I mean it is not to buy a player hoping for a quick buck when selling him again.

If my initial assumption is correct, then we should identify the player, or players, who we can afford, and do our best to buy him, or them. If that means spending £80m or more, so be it, as long as we can afford it.

There is no guarantee that the player(s) purchased will be a success. That's the business risk you run, but as long as proper due diligence was done and the reasoning for the purchase was sound, that's life.

If the player is a huge success, you'd hope to keep him for as long as possible and get full value for the initial outlay. Again, he wasn't bought as an investment to be turned over.

If some Billy bigballs, oil rich, club comes along and offers funny money in the meantime. That's fine. But that should not be the rationale for any purchase.

Because they're a stupid club with a repeat pattern of overpaying for players - they've demonstrated time and time again that they'll spend whatever it takes on players without any due diligence only for the player to flop:

For example how many players here were actually a hit:

Manchester United - Record arrivals

You can also use Chelsea under Todd as well, half of their top 10 record transfer have come in since Boehly rocked up and not one of them has made a dent in the PL.

You can use the benchmark of City, Liverpool and Woolwich if you so wish but they don't tend to make stupid transfers for the most part and tend to know what they're doing but then again it's doubtful those clubs would drop €80m on a player with no prior experience in a big league - Even Woolwich learnt from their mistake of buying Pepe.
Crikey! The first page of that list doesn’t make good reading, with only a few being what I’d class as a success and worth the fee paid.

I still think eze and Toney get done.

Issue is, we do still need a winger that can take on a man 1v1 and a left sided defender that can cover LCB and LB

That’s 4 players with GLC, Gil, Solomon, Reguilon and Emerson still to sell/loan

Lot of work. I wonder with the added games will we keep more youth like Philips/Devine rather than loan them?

It looks like ours a few years ago, now it's looking a bit more healthier:

There are still many issues that need to be clarified, especially PSG/Bayern both need to move their players before buying someone at this time. Rennes is no hurry to sit down for negotiations, so everything is probably not over yet
Bayern can have Doue. If that helps them, I'd happily take Bryan Zaragoza off their hands.

I know, another 4ft tall Bryan...

They cost us far more than that!

No, you have misunderstood. I’d endorse a significant transfer, but the ‘I don’t care what the risk is or what the price is, just get it done’ attitude you seem to advocate I just can’t get onboard with.

We can’t just throw cash around and overpay significantly without doing our due diligence.

Just look at Utd for how that turns out!
Or Chelsea

I really like Kulu but I think he won’t ever reach his peak playing in England. Too slow unfortunately
Only forwards from last season who should still be on the roster are Sonny & BJ.

Werner's loan should never have been extended.

Kulu was terrific his first 6 months, but time has come to find the kid a new home. Very best wishes to him.

Richy...take care lad but off you go.

Solomon, Bryan G...need I explain.

we'll probably try corner wolves in the final week of the window with a much reduced(and more realistic) offer

really dont get the eze hype and he also plays in a position we are already fairly healthy in. not sure hes even an upgrade on maddison.

we need far better wide players, the money should be invested into that area, thats where we will see the biggest % increase. they are far to important in this system to be incompetent.
