I think you're right. And consequently I don't see us finishing much higher than we did last year.
We were 25 points off 1st last season. A striker and a winger ain't catching that many points up. The goal has to be top 4 and narrow the gap to around 10 points. This will be a tough season, there are 8 decent teams trying for 6 spots to play in CL or Europa.

Newcastle and Man U will be better than last season. No European games this season helps them. Newcastle had an even worse injury run than we did and Man U couldn't score any goals. The top 2 from last year will be strong again. Chelsea are a weird squad, very inconsistent, they started playing decent in the back half of the season. Liverpool might take time to get going under new manager and Villa might struggle with CL.

We seem to have better depth than last season but will need it with Europa. A couple of big signings that can help our starting team is what we need to push for top 4.

Yes still, far too open at the back, certainly can't win titles whilst still like that.
It works if u can score 3-4 goals a game- trouble is that’s a big frigging ask in the Prem. If we manage to average 2.5 goals a game it’ll probably have been a very good season for us.

Between constantly exposing ourselves on the counter and the ongoing set pieces fiasco we shouldn’t expect to have too many clean sheets right now. I would have thought our double 8 double pivot CM would be able to cover wide for underlapping FB runs but that did not appear to happening much at all in the run in last season and it hurt us a lot- especially in big games against our rivals.

It remains to be seen if Ange can bring about any real defensive improvement this season. I just hope Dragusin is enough quality to cover when VdV or Romero won’t be available.

That's the thing though, this isn't the Scottish league where, you can win by 3/4 goals a game, down here that doesn't happen.
Will be interesting to see if, any lessons have been learnt and, the team tightens up defensively.
Dragging Will be ok, but we could do with defensive cover, but it depends on what the club feels is a priority.
Securing top six has to be the aim again.

I wouldn't be disappointed if we signed Eze but surely we have priorities in other positions first.

get him in and a wide upgrade and its been a strong summer.
Toney and Eze would be amazing... (Especially if we CAN get upwards of £50-60m for Richy from $audi!!)

Think there's still one or two surprises to be had...
Would be disappointed if Kulu left, but only 'cos it feels like Ange may have found his preferred position, rather than the one-trick pony cutting in from the right that seemed to suddenly stop working after Norwich away two seasons ago!!

The players have now had a season and a pre-season to adjust to Anges system. I hope they’ve been working on upping their fitness and stamina. You really need to be the fittest team in the comp to play Anges system for a whole season

I think last season was a B+

Started playing attractive football and scored lots of goals, the back half was a bit of a letdown but we didn't have the players to replace the non-performing midfield.

Now we've got Bergvall and Gray as midfield alternatives.

We've already got enough alternatives on the wings (Son/Werner & Johnson/Kulu), they are all good at providing crosses into the middle.

Defence wise, we have a great back four. Dragusin is itching for more involvement & keep Spence.

Promote Lankshear, Moore, Phillips and Hall to the first team and we're cooking with gas.

It wouldn't worry me if we don't sign any more players.

The nucleus is there for success.

Our forward line isn’t good enough.

Defence - fine need another LB/LCB but the starting is great with Dragusin and Spence as back up for CB and RB.

Midfield - Gray and Bergvall could be gems, Bentancur should be back to his best. We probably need another AM to help Maddison but not too concerned.

Attack - Moore is probably 1-2 years from elite, Son and Johnson are good goalscorers but we lack a winger who holds the ball well, wins 1v1 consistently and links to a level like Saka or Neto etc. As for CF Richarlison is ok but he is always injured so ideally an upgrade on him if he is leaving for Saudi.

Our aim should be to compete with City and Arse and we are at least 3 good players away from that. Our style is good long as we build for it. I am enjoying us trying to play attacking football again.

Having Van de Ven and Maddison available for the extra 3 months alone would make a significant dent in the gap. As will having a post-op Richarlison. Proper cover for the inverted WBs (assuming Spence has played his way into the squad) will also make a big difference as Royal and Davies were significant handbrakes to how we attacked when they had to deputise. One more creative attacking player whether Eze or Neto (or both), will also make a big difference IMO.

Think we are going to make a signing today.

If the club wants to increase its chances for trophies next season we probably need something like the below. Obviously very unlikely but that would pretty much fill all gaps I think, hopefully the club have scouts that can find alternatives of the same quality.

ST: Gyokeres (Richarlison to Saudi)
WF: Neto (Bryan Gil sold)
AM: Eze (Lo Celso sold)
LCB/LB: ? (Davies sold)
