How Dry should our Powder be?

We have spent a decent amount in the last 5 years but thats because we massively under invested the 5 or more before that and we let a good team grow too old and all at the same time.

To add to that when the rebuild started in 2019 we bought appallingly, followed up by another terrible window in 2020 and not much better in 2021. Only Romero and Sarr will be here come September from those 3 years which tells you everything. That is on the people that run the club because they hired or over promoted complete fucking idiots.

So we've been in a constant state of rebuild for 5 years, chasing our tail and that means lots of spending just to pretty much stand still.

Win the league cup and our own fans will be referencing it as 'clown cup' or 'worthless cup' I think I heard when we won the 'Worthington' Cup.

Win the FA Cup and it will be played down as a minor, over due trophy on the back of lucky draws.

Win the UEFA Cup and it will be the Thursday night budget squad cup.

Win the league and it will be because it was the easiest ever season to win it. ever.

Sesame Street Idk GIF
Sounds like Daniel Levy giving his latest manager his yearly targets.
In summary - "top 4 will do, maybe top 6, nothing else"

What people also gloss over is that the worst period of last season came when all our best players were fit. That disgusting run of defeats came with VDV and Romero playing every game, the "didn't sign a CB" excuse might explain our wobble in November but it doesn't explain our end of season collapse. In retrospect waiting until Jan to sign a CB didn't really make much difference.
What would you put our "disgusting run of defeats " down to.

The manager?

We can't blame fatigue. We had no European football AND no domestic cup interest. In fact we played less games than everyone else!

Yes.

We got progressively worse as the season wore on. Players got worse as the season wore on. Tactics became easier for opposition to exploit as the season wore on.

I worry 24/25 will just see the trend continue.

We bottled it, it's as simple as that. The pressure of the run in got to us and we shat ourselves as we have done many times before. Maddison being in diabolical form was a big thing too but it was mostly a mental collapse. We played with far more guts in that November-January period when we had half a team and Emerson/Davies at CB than we did during the run-in. Compare how we played away at City vs away at Newcastle.

Everyone at the club has to take responsibility for how we fell apart last season. Players didn't show enough heart, Ange was extremely naive at times, Levy wasn't bold enough in the market. There is a lot of work to do but I'm optimistic that lessons have been learned. We have made changes to the coaching staff, we are binning the players that need binning, we are signing hungry players.

Very much a pinch of salt here……

I’m warming to Toney the player. Not sure about the guy. His goal return wasn’t great since his ban but he does bring players into the game well

If we could get them down to under 40 probably a good deal?

He is overrated. Instead of shitting £40m (I'm guessing) on a player who will be 29 this season and has one good top flight season under his belt, we should shit £80m on a better, younger player.

This would be such a cop out transfer.
