We have spent a decent amount in the last 5 years but thats because we massively under invested the 5 or more before that and we let a good team grow too old and all at the same time.
To add to that when the rebuild started in 2019 we bought appallingly, followed up by another terrible window in 2020 and not much better in 2021. Only Romero and Sarr will be here come September from those 3 years which tells you everything. That is on the people that run the club because they hired or over promoted complete fucking idiots.
So we've been in a constant state of rebuild for 5 years, chasing our tail and that means lots of spending just to pretty much stand still.
Between 2016 and 2020 we spent a lot of money - Sanchez was a record signing at the time and one of the most expensive defenders in UK, Moura also expensive. And we won't mention Nodombele. Lo Celso and Sessegnon,
The fact is we had NO good purchases in that time period, Sanchez and Moura were the best of a very bad collection of players. None of the players over that 4 year period became automatic starters.
And over 4 years, the first team players we had got old - Eriksen being a prime example sold for £18m when we could have got £100m a year or so earlier and reinvested the money,
So given that situation Paraciti (initially) has done a good job in bring in a number of players to form a decent first team, a total change in recruiting success.
ManCity spent best part of a decade and well over a billion to put together a squad, so no surprise Spurs rebuild is in a good position, but not complete. The one thing we now have going for us is a stream of decent youngsters coming through the academy, a number currently with the first team who seem technically to be as good as most first teamers and every possibility of joining the first team squad over the next 1 - 3 years. Ange will make a decision after seeing them in preseason on their timescales to join first team squad and/or loans.
And in addition Archie Gray looks to be ready to join the first team squad now and Luca Bergvall probably not far behind if at all - again Ange is assessing them right now.
Sure we'd all like instant gratification, but neither life nor football (see ManCity above) is like that.
As a point of fact, we are LESS than half way through the transfer window which opened on 1 July and runs until end August - so just as last season we will probably sign a couple of others (remember Van de Venn joined days before season started).
There are plenty of players who will ONLY move on at the end of this window as their clubs will not sell them until then - those with a business background will understand the reasons.
So its far to early for all the angst flying around - usually from people on keyboards who are bored !
