How Dry should our Powder be?

Regardless of whether we as fans do or don’t rate Gallagher. Last season our central midfield wasn’t good enough for a variety of reasons.

Gray is a superb signing but he’s also only 18 and will take time to bed in. Bergvall looks a massive talent but he’s also very young and it’s going to take time for both him and Gray to get used to life at an EPL club and get up to and maintain the physical demands of the league.

We’ve gained 2 youngsters and loaned with an obligation one first team squad regular in Hojbjerg. It’s also likely that albeit a very part player, Lo Celso will leave as well. Skipp is hard working but he’s a squad player at best. Bentancur - the juries out as to whether he’ll regain his post injury form.

When and ‘if’ both Gray and Bergvall integrate themselves in 1-2 -3 years time? Then if all goes well we’ll be stronger but for now our central midfield isn’t noticeably better than it was last season and as it stands it looks like we’ll be starting the season with the same midfield options that went missing post November 2023.

Whether it be Gallagher or someone else E.g. Ederson, we’re lacking another very good player in central midfield. Signing one of these shouldn’t come at the expense of a forward player especially considering we would be replacing Hojbjerg, we’ve saved money by not needing another RB and now Richarlison looks like he’s going nowhere. Plus with Emerson’s pending exit, we’ll be in profit. There’s still a few weeks until the season starts but the planned and swift acquisitions approach of summer 23 is nowhere to be seen this summer.

Are you suggesting that an 18 year old who has made 46 appearances in Ligue 1 and a Dutch international at this stage are not on a different level to an 18 year old who has only played in the Champ and another 18 year old who has played less than 40 games in Sweden?
Is Ligue 1 a mir difficult league than the Championship?
A handful of better teams in Ligue 1 but Championship as an overall league maybe harder and certainly more physically demanding.
Both good proving grounds but if I was going to send a youngster on loan I'd rather they had a good season in the Championship as a better judge of how they'd do in the PL.

Solomon played in just FIVE games (two assists) in just five games. How the fuck can anyone suggest that he is not good enough?

Werner scored two goals, and three assists in ten games, joining us in January.

Richy had injuries, and personal issues last season, but netted eleven goals (from just eighteen starts) twenty eight matches altogether.

When you say "not good enough" just how good does a player need to be in order to meet your criteria?

Messiesque?

FFS who do you think we are, and can sign for our forage into the fucking Europa League?

Wake up and smell the coffee.

Ange says he’s wants to challenge for the Premier League.

Bergvall even said the same in an interview.

You wake up and smell the coffee mate, that’s what we are trying to achieve.

Solomon isn’t the level.

On Gallagher I just think why? No better than Hjojberg and doesn't want to come to us. It's embarrassing if we are interested and defies logic or anything of quality that I have seen in the bloke

The Euros revealed his limitations. Not sure at all what Postecoglou is looking at if he thinks Gallagher is the answer, which is not to say I might be completely wrong.

Eze would be good. I think City bound.
The thought of that greasy little dyed-in-the-wool Chelsea fan, manbun-wearing wanker taking Sarr’s place in the team actually makes me physically angry.

Physically I think they're as demanding as each other tbh but agree they're both good proving grounds. There is a difference though when you're an 18 year old starting CB in such a physical league and you make CL qualification, team of the year etc.

If another team had signed Gray I don't think this would have been a controversial take.

If we come out the other side of the window without progress I'll agree with you. I just think having so much of Spurs management on the tour it isn't likely we'll see signings before they get back. What will be interesting is what Spurs business in the window says about how far away the team is from top three. With so much focus on youth my guess is they are still looking over the horizon a few years. So far it looks like they are pointing toward 2026 as the estimated time of arrival. That won't sit well with fans, but it is probably the reality of the situation. That doesn't mean they can't reach the top 4 this season, but I think Spurs are two seasons away from title contention.
The year is 2048 and this time it's for certain, Spurs are only two years away from title contention.

No. Off the top of my head, Moore and Donley at least got minutes, Moore made his debut against Man City.

That said, I still wouldn't be surprised to find us on the lower end. Ange clearly tried to use his first team squad more last season and get them embedded with the system before turning to the kids.
These tables are a bit deceiving at times. If you have one teenager who plays most of the season you will get almost 3k mins . Newcastle had that because of Lewis Miley who only played because they had tons of injuries. You cannot say Newcastle have a top academy, don’t turn out many players. Mainoo played half a season for Utd because of injuries. Woolwich were lucky with injuries so didn’t have to use young lads to fill in. Not defending them but that’s why they have lost him but also two others to Brighton and Luton.

No striker or an additional central midfielder is a worry..
Just one forward apparently!
To those who said timo was just a loan / stop gap he still takes a place in the 25 man squad. We could have used donley or Moore there instead and bought in real quality. As it is if we are paying him £165K/ week then he is not gonna be left out of match day squads. Thus blocking likes of donley who could play there and Moore. If we lose our young talent bcos their path is blocked first team average squad players then I give up. Ange had all season to experiment and give some of these players game time and everyone would have understood. Anyone really think his gonna do that now in his 2nd season where he says his going for the title.
