Player Alfie Devine

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

The perfect Europa League midfielder.

Get him starting with Gray and Bergvall in that competition and watch a midfield three blossom in front of our very eyes.
We’ll get drawn against a team like Dinamo Zagreb or Hadjuk Split, play the three away and get well-beaten….then everyone will complain that we don’t take cups seriously.

Without teams dropping down from the UCL, the Europa is there for the taking more than ever and it’s automatic UCL qualification.

I have no objection to integrating (blending?) them into the team (although I think Devine needs a good loan after last year) but if we start all three in a must-win match in a place like Croatia etc. then I will be pissed.

We only have to finish in the top 24 to qualify for the next round, so I'm sure we can utilise our squad without affecting our chances.

Starting Devine, Gray and Bergvall is alot different to throwing Hojbjerg, Lo Celso and Skipp in as a midfield three, depth and profile wise against the lesser sides.

Presumably strength of group stage placing still affects 2nd phase draw?

The latter grossly under-performed whearas the former could easily come unstuck against a highly motivated, experienced group of adults.

There's a fine balance that needs to be found....... Mura, Paco-Raban & Zagreb should rightfully leave a scar.

I'm not sure we'd have to worry too much.

The younger players play with enough bravery that I'd be confident they can beat the likes of LASK

A lot depends on how much rotation as a whole takes place in said XI..........

If we're also playing without Porro, Romero, VDV, Udog, Son and (god forbid) no Vicario, we're suddenly putting a lot of pressure on them to be the backbone of the team.

Forster
Spence / Drag / Davies / Donley
Devine / Gray
Solomon (or Mickey) / Berg / Werner
Richy (or Lanc)

...Would be that 2nd string atm.

Really looking forward to the EL though..... Probably more than the EPL atm as I don't see the starting 1st XI changing much until the young'ns have shown and proved in the cups.

Ange on whether Alfie Devine will go on loan this season:

“We'll have a look at it really closely. I agree, Alfie has had a really good pre-season and again compare it to last year and he's definitely developed. Part of that is probably because he's played senior football last year on loan.

I wouldn't want to keep him with us unless I really felt he can get some significant game time because I don't want to startle his development because he is a player that can make an impact here at Spurs.

Fair to say him and the other younger guys, Jamie Donley, Will Lankshear have made an impression both in the way they have trained and the way they have played games. We'll have a close look at what the next steps are.”

Read we are no longer looking for new CM after Bergvall and Gray did their job on pre-season and estabilished themselves as first-team ready players. Also according to Ange comments, Gray will cover like 3 positions (CB included) - so i think there might be some minutes to grab for Devine on first half of season.

Depends on how Forster comes back after injury. Even before the injury he looked like a wardrobe falling over on some saves, if he has got any slower then it is probably time to move on.

A chance for him to properly have a go at becoming a first team player here until January is no bad thing. He’s looked great in the England youth teams. Obviously the PL is a huge step up and he might not get any games but if he trains well that might be enough.
