Would Solanke fit Spurs?

There is evidence to suggest that Solanke’s 2023-24, in which he scored nine more Premier League goals than he managed in 96 previous appearances, wasn’t just a flash in the pan.

Andoni Iraola’s system worked wonders for Solanke, who was already working hard off the ball under previous managers, as he stayed closer to the penalty area. His 17 non-penalty league goals came from an xG of 17.3, which suggests his improved form had more to do with service, tactics and positioning rather than unsustainable overperformance.

A comparison of Solanke’s numbers from last season with Richarlison’s (11 goals in 28 league games) brings up some similarities, while also suggesting that Richarlison marginally overperformed expectations.

Solanke vs Richarlison
PLAYERSHOTSSHOT ACCURACYNON-PENALTY XG/SHOTGOALS/SHOTNON-PENALTY GOALS - NPXG
Solanke2.8733 per cent0.160.16-0.01
Richarlison3.7440 per cent0.150.180.08
Richarlison, like Solanke, was effective in positioning himself between centre-backs to score from cutbacks, though he was not as keen as Solanke to attack the six-yard box. The Brazilian, however, contributed defensively, a key requirement in Ange Postecoglou’s system.

Richarlison averaged more interceptions (0.5 vs 0.2), tackles (0.97 vs 0.62) and tackling success (68 vs 48 per cent) per 90 minutes. Solanke, however, was more effective in the air, winning 42 per cent of his aerial duels compared to Richarlison’s 31 per cent. Additionally, they both averaged 0.8 possessions won in the final third per 90, while Solanke’s 1.2 possessions won in the middle third was more than Richarlison’s 0.6.

In terms of link-up play, Richarlison’s 2.3 progressive passes and 1.3 passes into the final third per 90 were ahead of Solanke’s 1.6 and 0.9 respectively, though Solanke was the better dribbler (37 per cent take-on success vs 27 per cent).

Some of this also has to do with Richarlison averaging nearly 11.0 more touches per 90 than Solanke and the latter’s role in Bournemouth’s system. Solanke averaged more touches in both boxes, while Richarlison was ahead in touches in the middle and final third.

Solanke also played in all of Bournemouth’s league matches last season, which gives him the edge in availability.

His link-up play is the only unknown commodity, but Postecoglou’s strikers barring Richarlison have traditionally had few touches and high impact. Solanke fits that mould well and could elevate Spurs’ attack next season.

"And my job is to try to bring success - and if you don’t think you’re going to be in the title race in 12 months’ time, then I don’t know why I’m here.” - Apr 24

Why are you here mate?

You ought to learn the difference between mentality and strategy, already covered this:

A lot of fans confuse his mentality with his strategy - his mentality is to win so he'll constantly make references to what he believes his end goal will be with this club even if the team is under cooked and not ready, he'll continue to spread messages of winning and challenging for the league like he has done consistently since he's been managing the club which is probably his way of getting the message across to the fans and players to always believe and manifest a winning mentality.

In reality though it's bravado, we know it, he knows it because he's said things like this:

Doesn't sound like a man who thinks we can challenge for the league does it, there's a lot of caveat's in there which is normal.

This is his strategy, he knows we aren't there yet, he knows he's taken on a project and he knows the squad still needs work but he's not going to constantly make references to it because it spreads the wrong message, Klopp and Arteta used the same strategy from day 1 when they were hired and fans thought they were crazy...that's the power of law of attraction, you manifest a winning feeling which alters your mind state into believing that one day you will win.

Anyway...this fanbase moans about lack of winning mentality throughout the club and moan at the likes of Conte who made references about us and how he's not used to fighting for 4th and how he's bigger than us, putting us down at every opportunity but when we have a manager who dares to tries to change the mentality of the club and the fanbase and actually puts pressure on the board we seemingly still have a problem with it, weird.

More to the point if you don't trust the manager yourself and think he's not good enough then why do you believe in him when he says we can win the league, or are you just picking apart certain statements which suit your agenda maybe.:gallashmm:

Not sure you can have it both ways...

He'll be hanging over this club for decades. He's one of the best players and probably strikers we've had in our history. It's comparable to 1987 and replacing Hoddle with Jonny Metgod with the way we are going about things!

This fanbase hang onto things and long for things way too much IMO, was always gonna be a bitch replacing Kane but he's gone now we just need to accept it

I'm sure we could sort a few more players out in the clubs we are looking to do deals with like Bournemouth and wolves or palace. We have a few good players who won't get a lot of minutes so we could loan out and players we want rid of who could make a deal a bit more easier like GLC . reggy. I think le celso would do an amazing job at a club like palace or wolves

So i will be very sad to see him go - but don't begrudge him going to lets face it - a team were he has a chance to win trophies
At Spurs ? I think there's a good chance that we'll win a trophy before Spurs do.

Not even the best comment on there:

Apart from Son I cannot see another spuds player of any value to us

Think Lo Celso and Reggie have ideas above their ability, doubt either would take any of those clubs. Can only think of Skipp that Wolves and Bournemouth might be interested in and who would likely be willing to go. Palace obviously have Wharton. Maybe Solomon is a possibility but he'll be lucky to fetch £5m.

Good chance they get relegated and then win the championship before we win a trophy so not entirely inaccurate I guess.
