If you don't recognise that goals and assists win games then football is 100% not the sport for you.
Try ice dancing.
Yes, the game is won by scoring more goals than your opponent
as a team.
What good is it if Son, Solanke and Johnson put up good stats but we come 6th?
The reality is no matter what the stats tell you about all of our attacking players last season, we clearly lacked something up there in our build up play.
Johnson isn’t a great presser, isn’t a particularly good tracker of runnners, doesn’t beat a man one on one and isn’t great at retaining the ball under pressure. All this matters even when assessing goals and assists.
Like Son, he’s an elite off ball runner and has been really effective at that. Unfortunately, having 2 wide players with the same limitations is extremely limiting, again,
for the team.
20% of our goals and assists or not, we need a different profile of a player in the wide areas. They may not get 20% of our goals and assists, but if they improve the team and push us up the table (which the right player would absolutely do) it really doesn’t matter.
A good example of this was Firminho for liverpool in their pomp. They could have upgraded his goal output at any time, but what he brought
to the team was more important than individual stats.
I’ve used the term before but simply saying “he got 20 of our goals and assists” is reductive.
What matters is what the
team needs to make us better.
