There is the problem with your argument you're missing though, if the manager didn't want these players what happens then? If the manager preferred to go for Odabert for example then what does that have to do with the club because we all want the manager backed right? Why does yours/mine or anyone else's opinion matter on who we bring into this club?
I've seen this a lot from Spurs fans, they thought that this is finally going to be the Summer where we spend big and splash out and due to the FFP thing and the figures being quoted they had the ideology that we were ready to outspend everyone else and bring in stars...the problem is that if the manager doesn't support that kind of thinking then why do we insist that what we want is far more important to the teams needs?

They might not win you things as your main options and starters ( I think Johnson still has growth to come in his game and could develop other threats) but they do get you points across a season which contributes to higher league finishes. That's exactly how the Moneyball approach works. They get you better league rankings with aggregate production in specific areas.
Odobert has better goal threat than you think, he’s legitimately got ball striking ability in the final third, both feet as well. Was surprised watching him. Fuck the stats, he was 19 and playing for Burnley. He has a much more complete profile of potential end product than Johnno/Werner.

And I may get proven to look like a silly cunt at the end of the season, and I realllly hope I do, but when Ange gave it the big ‘we’re going for the title’ speech, between that and everything else you mention around PSR/FFP, I just don’t think we pictured our central midfielder and winger signings to be teenagers Gray and Odobert - and whether Ange wants them or not, when you talk titles and have a 25 or whatever it is point deficit to close, it’s hard to see that challenge talk materialising . . .
Again, hope I’m wrong. Hope Gray captains England and Odobert becomes the next great Tottenham entertainer.
What I guess I’m trying to say is I set my expectations based on what the manager said and how the finances looked, and now I’m trying to rapidly realigning those expectations - and it’s frustrating. Of course it is.
If this is our new strategy. I’m more than happy to back it, but the noise from the club can’t be ‘we’re challenging for the title’ and we’ll be making ‘game changing transfers’. This strategy won’t bare fruits for a few years. Again, fine, but don’t sell us the ‘next season’ line, which is what sets fans expectations sky high.
