How Dry should our Powder be?

Very odd how we have completely ignored LB and GK. Understand that not every need can be met in a single window, but we don’t have a suitable longer term solution for either of those positions.

No it is not odd.

Before we think about backup we should think about first XI.

We still do not have good enough wingers for this system to properly work. So to me signing a winger ready to start and increase our productivity would be ahead of 2nd picks for LB and GK position, specifically considering that Spence, VDV and Davies can all be used as LB.

He did not but he also didn't have a scouting network with the coverage we have now. He discovered Ronaldo because they played Sporting in pre-season or something like that.

I would say this though, listen to the way Harry Redknapp speaks about Archie Gray and it becomes abundantly clear that Gray is exactly the type of talent that Fergie used to hoover up from the English football pyramid. Meanwhile we have whingers in our fanbase complaining about it because they wanted a mercenary with a bigger name they they've heard of like Locatelli or Ugarte who have both failed their auditions at bigger clubs. Not saying they are bad players but one thing I do know is that when Harry Redknapp talks about a young English footballer, you listen.
He didn’t discover anybody. Ronaldo was well known , Liverpool thought they had him at one time.
With these players it’s a case of who has the courage to go and sign them. They don’t always work out,
Fergusons worst buys were when his son, Jason, was working as an agent and Ferguson signed, Djemba Djemba, Kleberson and David Bellion. All linked to Jason. Worst ever buys.
Subject of a Panorama doc which resulted in Ferguson refusing to speak to the BBC for many years.
Clear breach of contract but never punished . Just a bully who can’t take it when he gets it back.

Not disagreing with that. Although Son hasn't got long and is already quite a patchy player.
Really it's only Romero and Son that can say they're at the top of their game though. There's "older" players sure, but players like Vicario, Solanke, Bissouma, etc aren't all players who have a lot of experience against Europe's best teams. Solanke has 5 Uefa Cup games and no senior international caps for example. When United were blooding the kids they proper leaders and players experienced at the highest level. I don't feel like we have that.

We don't have that and tbh I don't think we could buy that if we tried.

Going back to the original conversation about a project and the transfer window, Poch's project didn't have veterans with that kind of experience either. That team grew into it together. Tbh with Son and Romero we have 2 winners on the international stage that we never had at the start fo that project and Bentancur is a guy who has more winning experience than anyone we had in that squad. Kulusevski was part of winning squads at Juve as well I think. Porro win things with Sporting before he came here as well.

If anything, the foundations of this project are stronger than they were when Poch started. Even down to the manager because Ange has won things everywhere he's been. Poch didn't win a sausage until he went to PSG.

I still don't know who fucked that project up. We had Poch on camera "iss velly hard to upgrade this team"
No it's not. Upgrade the bench. Have better options. Upgrade 1-3 starting 11 players and relegate those to the bench. Don't do nothing for 2 windows when you're within touching distance of greatness.

Levy fucked Poch by not getting him a next level star to take that team over the edge. Poch fucked himself by being stubborn about not taking any other options except the star player he wanted. he might still have a job here if he'd allowed the squad to be strengthened.

Whatever though. I have colossal nostalgia for that team and I'm still fuming that they never won anything but somehow I don't have nostalgia for the project or that period at the club.

Fergie’s scouting network was unmatched at the time. He discovered Schmeichel, Kanchelskis, Solksjaer in markets others weren’t even looking in. Problem is now everyone has data and large scouting networks but the data leads everyone to the same players and the likes of City or Real hoover up the cream of the crop,

They are but we also know that Eddie Howe was fuming about having to sell off Anderson and Minteh because of bad planning with FFP. They really struggled to strengthen this summer because they tried to improve to much too soon and now have a hard ceiling above their heads.

Stavely looks like she did good things for Newcastle and they apparently love her up there but where is the evidence that she knows how to take us to the next level? Remember it's not her money that gets invested.
I'm just glad they haven't started cheating, yet.
They could easily use one Saudi club to buy surplus, expensively. And I'm surprised that no Saudi airline or Oil company is their biggest sponsor. Yet.

Unmatched but not on the level of coverage that teams can have now. That's all I'm saying.

We won none of these in the 11 years before ENIC, and won 8 of them in the previous 109 years of our existence.

ENIC's penny pinching and short-sightedness has left us wanting for a lot, but our wane had long started before ENIC.
Too many forget where Scholar left us, and what ENIC had to build us up from in those 23 years.

You can certainly lambast them for how we've operated from Poch to now, but to lump in the previous years, when we were building from perennial relegation flirters, is utter sophistry.

IMO and I'm a Spurs fan so biased but I think our scouting network is starting to show that it's got better coverage than a lot of clubs. Brighton probably still the top of the tree in the Prem but we are probably second for coverage.
I’m sure we’re doing some interesting things with data, Lange’s guy Leith is supposed to be on the cutting edge there. I just think it’s harder and harder to get the elite talents these days because everyone knows them as the data guys can spot them fairly easily.

I'd call it excessively long termist, derived from a partnership structure that means external funding is more complex to access than most of the league.

Scholar left us in a financial mess after winning the cup in 1991. Sugar gets a bad rap, but to be fair to him he inherited a financial shit show, which he managed to sort out and win a league cup and see us into a couple of other cup semis.

Sugar also stepped aside to let Enic in when he realised he couldn’t take us any further or didn’t want to invest further.

Now Enic have improved the club in every way bar one - trophies, they haven’t yet eclipsed Sugar or Scholar on that front. It’s their biggest failing, we should have had a couple more cups in this period and the biggest reason we do t is because of how much we love to shoot ourselves in the foot

And financial doping from other clubs. Which didn't exist when ENIC took over.
