Let me explain why I really do mean waste of money when discussing Richy/Johnno. Double spending.
To illustrate my point, let’s look at three really good transfers and examples of great recruitment: Romero Porro and VDV. each of these players were bought for high fees, £40m+, but with that comes the requisite quality. These players are pretty much penciled in on the team sheet and locks to start every match. Not perfect players, but everyone agrees they’re key parts of our foundation moving forward and, more importantly, it will be hard to upgrade upon them in the market.
As a result, we don’t need to buy a new CB to replace Romero or VDV because they didn’t work out.
let’s compare and contrast with £60m Richy and £50m Johnno - basically after only one season, the club and manager decided that we need to spend big on a new striker and a new winger, specifically RW. While Neto didn’t come off, Odobert did and it’s clear from Ange’s comments that he wants a RW upgrade. As for Richy, we did however spend £65m on Solanke, which is a sign the club did not trust Richy to be that foundational striker piece.
Do you see the difference? Our defenders are foundational, hard to upgrade, and penciled in - key parts of our future. Johnno and Richy on the other hand have been immediately targeted as positions we need to upgrade despite spending that money.
What this does is necessitates situations where we’re DOUBLE spending on a position so now our striker outlay is £120m between Dom/ Richy and our winger outlay is in the hundred million range because we had to immediately get an upgrade on Johnson. That is why it’s a waste of money. Look I know not every transfer will be a hit but with our chairman’s financial limitations, we really cannot afford to be missing on £50/60m transfers. And unfortunately we’ve done just that.
