You will never please everyone. This time last year we were top of the league, not in Europe and out of the cup. This year we sit in 8th, but have won all 3 European games and have just knocked City out of the cup.

The negative nancies will focus on us being in 8th and say they see no progress. The positive people will look at the fact that we have a big chance in 2 competitions now. I just checked Paddy Power and I see we are 7/2 to win the Europa League and 5/1 to win the EFL cup so we have a genuine chance of winning silverware this year. Maybe we shouldn't let the league position bother us for now?

We are not way off the pace - 5 points off 4th is nothing with 29 games to go when all the teams above us are dropping points every other game too

We are fucking way off it. We don’t win big games against direct competitors. We haven’t even had a hard run of games or dealt much with injuries yet.

We are in the apex of an Ange season, where most players are fit and not tiring due to his style. And we are already a bit rubbish.

Let’s see how bad it gets when we are limping in to the final 1/3 of the season with injuries and multiple comps. We looked shattered with a game a week last season.

context. we lose when we play anyone decent, or even weaker sides who actually want it. the europa games have been against championship level opposition, city didnt even want to win last night ffs. they were laughing before the final whistle. that cup is nothing but a hindrance to them this year. if city wanted to win that cup they would of beat us last night.

We are not way off it. We played United off the park and should have got results against Newcastle and Woolwich. We didn't exactly lose those games 3-0 and look hopeless. Lets have some perspective here. We can compete with all these teams

Still early in the season though to be making these statements. Lets see how we fair against Villa this week because I don't think they are any better than us. I'd be shocked if they beat us easy anyway. We'll compete

So here we are. Coming up to the 1/4 mark. I think a lot of people got PTSD from last season tbh. Last season after matchday 10 if you had told anyone we’d get less than 70 points and not finish top 4 you’d get abused.

A very different feel to this season.

What position do you think we will finish or how many points do you think we get?

Are you feeling confident of a top 5 finish? More points than last year?

We had two very shit patches last year - people conveniently ignore that from GW 16 to 32 we went on a run of P16 W10 L3 D3 averaging a fraction over 2 points a game.

I think we can challenge for 5th absolutely - Chelsea looks good to be fair but they have had hiccups. Villa has recently drawn with Ipswich and Bournemouth, and Brighton and Forest will fall away at some point....

We are further in the League Cup, and have European Football to contend with, which I feel we will get into the knockout stages for.

So while the league form is different feel to last, there is other stuff going on to encourage us - regardless of who the opponents are.

The Palace game and the second half vs Brighton have definitely given me pause and some concern but I'm not sure how anyone can write us off just yet - the league is still so tight and we have yet to play Chelsea, Forest and Villa - all above us who we can catch up 3 points to by beating them.

What your thoughts on the same questions?

yep, time will tell. but going off what weve seen over the last year i dont know how anyone who watches us every game can be optimistic.

agreed, villa will be a test. lets see

Yes, let's see.

I think I can see where the faith being exhibited by the devotees falls down. What is the longest EPL run of wins under Postecoglou? If we could put together even four Epl wins in the post Chelsea period I think it would go a long way for me to prove direction of travel.
We did 4 at the start of last season, Man U to Sheff Utd.

Most we've done since is 3 wins on the bounce in December, Newcastle, Forest and Everton sandwiched between defeats to West Ham and Brighton.

Sunday against Villa feels pretty big in terms of any prospects in the league this season. After the international break until Christmas we have a seriously bad run of fixtures Fulham, Chelsea, Liverpool at home, City, Bournemouth Southampton away. Not many gimmes in that lot but should beat Fulham and Saints.

I'm amazed how league position is even relevant after 9 games. such a small sample size. I never really start looking at the league position until close to Christmas. 4 defeats in 9 is poor but we have won 5/5 in the cup competitions so its not been a complete disaster. I think people need to relax a bit and appreciate its still October

I also find it crazy how people think Villa are lightyears ahead of us all of a sudden. They played their second team lastnight and got knocked out of the cup, because they wanted to rest everyone to play us at the weekend! Imagine if we did that!!

The guy you are arguing with isn’t going to listen to any sort of reason. Most universally disliked poster on the board. Save your time.

If you look at the top 6 teams (from last year, apart from us), Ange has a total of 3 wins from 14 tries, I believe?

0 this season
Villa in March
Toon last December
Liverpool at the start of the season

You have to beat the top teams at least sometimes to be considered one of them and we're not doing that. Against the commonly regarded "top 6" he's only done it once at the beginning when we were flying.

You can point to what might have been in any given match and say we looked pretty good losing in one game or another, but over the long term you are what your record says you are

Ironic enough writing all that a day after we beat Man City
