Sorry, but calling this the painful rebuild is such nonsense. When Poch used that phrase, the pain was getting rid of players who’d given great service. It was not spiralling into relegation form over 12 months. Young players need stability to thrive and the chaos of the last year is not gonna grow anyone into a great team.
Absolutely.

Since the "painful rebuild" started we've had 4 managers with vastly different playing styles. Players have been signed and frozen out, I mean fuck me we signed Djed Spence in the 2022 window and he's only just made his first start in December 2024, and that was due to our manager being forced into it.

Why do no other clubs need painful rebuilds that see them lose 50% of their matches? We're not some plucky underdogs we're one of the richest football clubs on the planet.

No competent rebuild with such huge resources at its disposal should be this painful.

Two of those players in Kane and Son single-handedly kept us competitive. Bumph was brought in around them as faux attempts to compete (along with high profile managers) but in reality keeping them meant offering wages that prevented a real rebuild because we know Levy isn't paying top wages for both and for enough quality around them to win.

Kane has gone and it looks more and more like we are about to start life without Son as an irreplaceable part of the project.

This is very much the start of a painful rebuild. Sarr, Udogie, Gray, Bergvall, Odobert, Moore, Vuskovic, Yang, even Kinsky they are the rebuild. Maybe even guys like Phillips, Devine, Abbott and Donley can wrestle a part in it.

You think the painful rebuild was happening under Mourinho?

Or is someone else chatting shit?

Why not?

It won't be because of what Ange has seen in training that he's not playing, it will be because he has zero experience of professional football.

Dorrington goes out on loan and impresses then he has a chance. Phillips has been doing well for Stoke, no?
Dorrington is 19 and can’t get a game for Gray who is 18 and is a centre mid or right back if needed. Spence is a wing back and got the nod before him. When
Dragusin went off we put Spence into centre back
and put in a player who we can’t get rid of who’s deemed nowhere near good enough to be near our team at left back. And Phillips looks a championship defender at best from what I’ve seen.
It’s only my opinion but I don’t think these two will even make 5 league starts for us between them.

Phillips, i will take your word for it because I haven't got any Championship games on any platforms this season.

Dorrington didn't play because he's not played any professional football. He could easily show what he has on loan. 19 is toddler age for a CB usually. Vuskovic is obviously different by the looks of it.

He trains every day with the first team and is always in about the squad. If the lad is good enough then give him his chance. He obviously isn’t or he would have got a chance with how things are just now. So basically Dorrington is 7th or 8th choice because he’d likely put Biss at centre back before him. If I’m not getting a chance at 19 years old and training with the first team every day then I’m starting to think I should go somewhere and play rather than do a Skipp and hang about for five years hardly playing when moving on is inevitable.

Porto's Alan Varela would be half-the-price, is (less than) 3 years-older, and could handle the pace and physicality of the Premier League.

I dig Iraola's vibe. 👍
Not sure about the differences between how Benfica and Porto play, but Neves' defensive stats from last season at Benfica are significantly better.

Maybe Nabil Bentaleb Nabil Bentaleb can shed some light.

I said the SIGNINGS for three years. Our squad had not received significant investment for years, the big investments (Sanchez, Ndombele, Lo Celso) contributed very little and latterly we’ve had to sunset kane and son… the best attacking players we’ve had in the PL era.

We now have a data led approach and we’re spending good money.

Things are bad now but we’re doing the right things and performances always lag the structural investissement.

Just as results continued to be good after the investment stopped… the results are now suffering even though the investments are good. That will turn around.
You do realise that every other team is using data too. And in fact data means it’s less likely we’ll ever find another Modric or Bale, because the teams that pay bigger wages sweep up the sure things.

Wait… Ange has spent almost two years not playing Spence. It turns out he is a good young player. He hasn’t played Reggie and he looked good enough to be a back up.

So you’re saying just because Ange isn’t picking him he isn’t good enough? Seems to me that logic doesn’t hold given recent revelations.

Varela had a great season last year, this year not so much far but he is a great player. A 6/8 type midfielder. Bentancur style but with a bigger ceiling and better defensively. João Neves is a 8/10. Think varela will be a great defensive midfielder in his career.

Dorrington had a serious injury last season and has only played a handful of u21 games this season. I think he is being eased back before he goes out on loan either in January or next season
