Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

In the past we have bought fading stars to do a job, players well past their prime - Lineker, Ginola, Klinsmann, etc.

Who can we get in this mould? I would love to say Messi, but he seems happy in the USA. Any other ideas?

Neither of those players were "well past their prime" when they joined Spurs.
Ginola became PFA Players' Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year while at Spurs, becoming the first player in Premiership history to win the award while at a club who finished the season outside of the top four.
And although Klinsmann's career was on decline he was still close to his prime - which is why Bayern bought him, and where he scored 31 goals over 2 seasons in the Bundesliga.
Lineker scored 67 goals in 105 league games club.
Top scorer in the First division in 1989-90 season, scoring 24 goals
Second-highest goal scorer in 1991-92 season, scoring 28 goals from 35 games
Won the FA cup in 1991.
But I see what you mean but it's a risk, since not all "fading stars" keep shining once they get a new pay-day secured. Of course, players like Davids and van de Vaart certainly did contribute...

Lineker was 28, Ginola and Klinsman just turned 30 each when they joined. I don’t see that well past their prime, especially so given what they managed to achieve when they joined.

Jordan Henderson would have ticked a lot of boxes if we had nipped in post his Saudi stint.

No offence to either of you, but members of TFC have been calling for succession planning on Kane and Son since they were 28. Harry Kane is now 31 and people say he is too old.

The point is all of Lineker, Ginola, Klinsmann, Van da vaart, David’s, were stopgaps for a season or two albeit with no long term plan at the time (Sugar years mostly). I think that’s what we need now until the kids come through.

Not sure this market is conducive to the sort of deals we have done in the past, but if they are there they are probably in Saudi or USA.

Club needs to be looking for the heir to Son's 20-25 goals a season right now. Solanke has been doing just about as much as he can with the service he gets. Next big purchase HAS to be a proven wing wizard that can bag 15ish or more goals a season. We are absolutely desperate for some real quality on the wing right now, you have to hope Levy and Ange or whoever else is making the decisions sees and understands that.
I honestly think we have the Son replacement already, just in the typical Spurs Fashion he has been injured when he would have been getting lots of minutes......

Sorry, but both Lineker and Klinsmann could argue that they were the best striker in the world when we bought them at 28 and 29. Basically what Bayern did with Kane.
We bought Lineker for like 2mil (maybe half our most expensive signing to that point?) and he spent 2 years with us then went to Japan for an easy life. That is definitely a fading star.

Klinsmann cost us 1.5m and left after a year. Then came back for 6 months because he couldn’t get game time and we were in trouble. Then went to the USA.

let’s put things in context please.

Lineker was with us 3 seasons and scored 80 goals in 138 games. Scored 35 in his final season. Wouldnt mind that now.

Problem I've seen with us for years now is that we sign players who aren't suited to the systems we play, and that goes all the way back to when we signed tiny Rebrov (arguably the best AM in the world with the right striker in a passing system) and deployed him as a target man in long ball. We signed fast break tap in merchant Soldado to play in a high press where he was constantly crowded out etc.

The best indicator of any player coming in is to look at their play in situations we often find ourselves in. If their highlight reel mostly consists of situations we don't regularly see at Spurs then they're probably not going to do as well here.

If Levy is committed to Ange then our first priority should be a central midfielder that can control the pace of games and distribute intelligently under pressure. Sadly that means finding a Modric like figure, which are rarer than hens teeth.
