Transfers January Transfer Thread 24/25

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Yeah I said this after watching him batter us in the defeat to them last year. Ben Jacobs thought so will be bollocks. If Ipswich go down there will be a whole host of clubs after him so that will probably rule us out.
I’d be all over this. He’s a beast and ruffles players up. Has a bit of everything in his game. I’d be happy with him and Solanke as our two strikers. I think
Delap will be a star.

If Levy is committed to Ange then our first priority should be a central midfielder that can control the pace of games and distribute intelligently under pressure. Sadly that means finding a Modric like figure, which are rarer than hens teeth.
Ange hasn't really used the midfield to control games since the Chelsea derby in 2023. Our build up happens through the wings.

But I get your point and think that he should utilise the midfield more.

Yeah, it's more about what happens when we come under pressure and our passing breaks down. Modric was very clear about how he plays, modelling it on the successful Barca team of the 00's - basically he always runs towards the player that he passes to, knowing that a bad touch or strong press means they may need to play it directly back to retain possession. We could use a lot more of that.

Gray is the only one of those that's really a DM, and he's very young and unproven at this level.

That's my point. Biss needs to be gone and replaced with an ELITE level DM.

As in probably our new record transfer level DM. With this squad, nd the way we've played (even before Ange), it's a paramount position. Without a doubt in my mind, it is the position which will most effectively improve the squad - it would make us better in every area of the pitch.

Betancur should be retained as a 8/6 unless a better 8/6 can be signed. If we can upgrade, then flog Betancur too.
Think Bergvall is looking like a DM as well but agree,

Honestly I’d upgrade both Biss and Bentancur this summer

We bought Lineker for like 2mil (maybe half our most expensive signing to that point?) and he spent 2 years with us then went to Japan for an easy life. That is definitely a fading star.

Klinsmann cost us 1.5m and left after a year. Then came back for 6 months because he couldn’t get game time and we were in trouble. Then went to the USA.

let’s put things in context please.
Sorry, you don’t know what you’re talking about.

We bought Lineker for 1.75m. Our transfer record was Gazza for 2.3m. He stayed three seasons, won the FA Cup, won the division’s golden boot, scored 5 in the 90 WC. He was a genuine superstar, probably only Gazza being bigger at the time in this country. He went to Japan for a life experience and because he had a nasty toe injury that would not heal.

Klinsmann joined us off a sensation WC and taking Monaco to the CL semi finals. He scored 29 goals in his season, and only Sugar and Francis having no clue or ambition to build the side meant he jumped ship to Bayern despite loving life in the PL. He came back to help us as we were in genuine danger of relegation.

These were two of the best signings we made in modern times, and exactly the type of ones we’ll never make under Levy.

Dorgu just popped up a screening algorithms I've been working on. This looks at xG contribution vs net turnovers, ie who creates the most chances while also helping his team keep possession. Dorgu is 17th in Serie A on the filter, and the best under 21. His xG per 90 minutes is 0.18 (shots), 0.15 (assists) and 0.21 (secondary assists). Turnovers to opposition: 16.5 per 90 but wins the ball back 8.7 per 90 for a net turnovers of 7.7 per 90.

Dorgu has mainly played LB and RW for Lecce this season. Comparing his stats to our FB's and RW's:
xG/90xA/90xA2/90Total xG+xAsTO-/90TO+/90TO Net/90Net TO per xG+xAs
Dorgu0.180.150.210.5416.58.77.714.3

Spence0.020.150.160.3314.09.05.015.4

When you take into account that Lecce have only averaged an xG of 0.98 per game (45% less than Spurs) then he's definitely pulling his weight, contributing to more than half of their chances while also being pretty good at keeping possession.

So Dorgu looks promising to me.

Top hits on that filter for potential right wingers (under 23) across all top 10 leagues:
  • Alberto Moleiro (Las Palmas, La Liga)
  • Bertug Yildirim (Getafe, La Liga)
  • Rayan Vitor (Vasco da Gama, Brazil)*
  • Georgios Koutsias (Chicago Fire, MLS)
  • Vitor Roque (Betis, La Liga)
  • André Luiz (Estrela, Portugal)
  • Luis Angulo (Central Cordoba, Argentina)
  • Marwan Al Sahafi (Beerschot, Belgium)
  • Dire Mebude (Westerlo, Belgium)
  • Arda Guler (Real Madrid, La Liga)
  • Amad Diallo (Manchester Utd, Premier League)*
* left footed

Rayan looks tasty but already being targeted by plenty of big clubs.

Incidentally, top Premier League hits for the same filter but any position (under 23):
  • Liam Delap
  • Amad Diallo
  • Pape Matte Sarr
  • Carlos Baleba
  • Tyler Dibling
  • Facundo Buonanotte
  • Elliot Anderson
  • Jhon Duran
  • Yehor Yarmoliuk
  • Noni Madueke
  • Ryan Gravenberch
Filter also turned up a 22yo left-footed centre back, Adam Obert (Cagliari, Serie A), might be worth a look....
Great work.
You guys have talked me into wanting Dorgu.
Dibling looks a very lively prospect. Was great against us.

Neither of those players were "well past their prime" when they joined Spurs.
Ginola became PFA Players' Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year while at Spurs, becoming the first player in Premiership history to win the award while at a club who finished the season outside of the top four.
And although Klinsmann's career was on decline he was still close to his prime - which is why Bayern bought him, and where he scored 31 goals over 2 seasons in the Bundesliga.
Lineker scored 67 goals in 105 league games club.
Top scorer in the First division in 1989-90 season, scoring 24 goals
Second-highest goal scorer in 1991-92 season, scoring 28 goals from 35 games
Won the FA cup in 1991.
But I see what you mean but it's a risk, since not all "fading stars" keep shining once they get a new pay-day secured. Of course, players like Davids and van de Vaart certainly did contribute...
Some here are calling Kane a "fading star."
One former poster claimed he was finished 4 years ago.

Be funny if we see a Lange classic swoop from nowhere for that Obert. You’ll be an ITK plus we’ll have a player called Odobert and another called Obert. Then we just need to sign one called Burt.

From the clips he’s a R8 in a 4-3-3

Looks amazing tbh
Surprisingly little shot / assist involvement (xG 0.06, xA 0.10, xA2 0.06) considering the tekkers apparent on the highlights reel. Compare to say Sarr (0.18 / 0.13 / 0.26). Makes me wonder what he's doing between the highlights.

Turnovers per 90 is 16, compared to Sarr at 13.4. Wins the ball back 10.7 times per 90, Sarr 11.4.

Doesn't really excite me unless Kulu or Madders are leaving.

Ok, that's twice he got mentioned.

How’s he compare to Bissouma or Bentancur for those?
