Transfers January Transfer Thread 24/25

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Problem I've seen with us for years now is that we sign players who aren't suited to the systems we play, and that goes all the way back to when we signed tiny Rebrov (arguably the best AM in the world with the right striker in a passing system) and deployed him as a target man in long ball. We signed fast break tap in merchant Soldado to play in a high press where he was constantly crowded out etc.

The best indicator of any player coming in is to look at their play in situations we often find ourselves in. If their highlight reel mostly consists of situations we don't regularly see at Spurs then they're probably not going to do as well here.

If Levy is committed to Ange then our first priority should be a central midfielder that can control the pace of games and distribute intelligently under pressure. Sadly that means finding a Modric like figure, which are rarer than hens teeth.
Our signings under Enic have never been focused on what the team actually needs

It's all opportunistic , is there a bargain to be had ? Is there an easy deal where we don't have to bid against other teams etc

It's all about price and convenience

Essentially why we've had fuck all success

Be funny if we see a Lange classic swoop from nowhere for that Obert. You’ll be an ITK plus we’ll have a player called Odobert and another called Obert. Then we just need to sign one called Burt.
Just watched mini of Obert's last match. Played at LB, seemed tidy, not super-fast. Nice run and assist for the winner, worth a watch if you can find the highlights.

Esssentially Levy only views players as assets in the market. Like any speculator, he doesn’t care what he trades in, as long as he gets it for what he perceives as under market value.

I agree, but why doesn’t he see this predominantly leads to overpaid signings that simply depreciate and are loaned before being sold for a nominal fee? I guess that’s why he’s doubled down on the data led value signings

You may have a bit of a point overall, but good lord, Rebrov was nowhere near the best AM in world football at the time, he wasn't even an AM, he was just a striker that was short.

Even if you want to insist he was an AM, this would be a selection of his competition in that bracket at the time:

Zidane
Rivaldo
Totti
Rui Costa
Deco
Nedved
Ronaldinho

He wasn't even close to those guys.

It's probably a definition thing. I guess you could also call him a support striker. At the time we signed him he'd formed the best attacking duo in the world with Shevchenko at Kiev. Now I'd happily take the argument that it was Shevchenko who made Rebrov rather than Rebrov's talent alone, but when we signed him he'd played the majority of his games behind Shevchenko, not as the most advanced player.

As Rebrov himself tried to explain to Pleat after being played out of position: “I’m not like Shevchenko, who scores lots of goals. I like to pass, to assist. Of course I score some goals, but I’m not the player who will definitely score 20 goals in the league.” (this is somewhat ironic, as he scored lots of goals at Kiev, but Ukraine isn't the PL).

Rather than get caught up in position definitions (I'd argue most of the above are a mix of CM's, Wingers and Strikers) my main point was that we play lots of money for players and then don't play to their strengths.

We bought Lineker for like 2mil (maybe half our most expensive signing to that point?) and he spent 2 years with us then went to Japan for an easy life. That is definitely a fading star.

Klinsmann cost us 1.5m and left after a year. Then came back for 6 months because he couldn’t get game time and we were in trouble. Then went to the USA.

let’s put things in context please.
Lineker was £1.5m ( and Nayim on loan ) United wanted him. El Tel got him.

He spent three full seasons at Spurs.

67 Goals in 105 games. He left for £2m after scoring 28 goals in 35 games in a terrible season ( just like this one in many ways )

He scored 20 odd of his international goals while a Spurs player.

Slightly churlish to argue the point, but if that’s on the way down then it’s a soft landing.

10 goals in 15 apps this season. DOB 9/1/03 classified as U21 for the EPL.

Not to mention at Kiev he played in a system under Lobanovskyi that was one of the innovators of coordinated pressing in European football. Come to 90s Spurs, where everyone just runs about a bit off the ball, if they haven’t gone deep at Faces the night before.
