Last season Rice was for the most phenomenal and made a big difference.

No coincidence that rabble have not been as good since his performances have dipped.

Fcuking love it and makes tomorrow an easier match to bear.
Rice must be one of the most overrated players in the league. Signed for 100m and talk he was going to become a better player than Rodri. Decent start with a few goals but they quickly realised his build up play is non existent so decided he can't play as the lone 6 so now he needs to have Partey/Jorginho/Merino beside him every game to do the build up faze. So Rice now plays as an attacking 8 even though his goal and assist numbers are well below the average for a box to box 8.

I was watching the game last night and Rice just looked like a poorer version of Joelington. A box to box nuisance who breaks up the play to a high level, but is bang average when on the ball! Definitely not the player the media make him out to be!

He's an enigma for a possession based side

He's a very good 6 for a team that wants to sit deep but for a progressive side that want to get the ball forward quickly the simple fact is that he doesn't release the ball quick enough and stunts attacks that's why they prefer Partey there.

As an 8 his technical ability is average and gets found out against good teams.

Yeah its no coincidence that they've become a far less attacking team since they signed him. He can't do the lone 6 role so they've been forced into playing two defensive midfielders every game and its so passive to watch

If I were Howe I'd play the 2nd leg like the first - as an away team.

Last few matches Goons been better away from home. 5 goals at Spam, 5 at Palace, 3 at Brentford.

At home? 0-0 v Everton, 1-0 v Ipswich.

Let them have possession, esp now that Saka injured. Hit them on the break, not the other way round.

I take it Saka takes corners too?

Now far be it from me to accuse Arteta of being a lying cry baby but just consider this . They could have scored several goals last night but for some fantastic defending by Newcastle . Strangely a lot of these chances were created from corners at which their delivery was typically excellent . Nearly all there corners were bang on the money , is Arteta saying that they used normal balls for corners and different balls from open play .

What a massive pillock he is

Have they actually peaked and now on the decline, you would have thought this season with City way off the pace they would have been able to take advantage!
I just hate watching them and their fucking stupid corner or free kick routines, maybe if they spent more time trying to play football and not time waste or play for set pieces they wouldn't be regressing.

How can you improve on perfection?

Edit - I've got an Arsehole and an Arseface in the wings too.

A bit harsh I think but this season he has done little, and he certainly hasn't got better.

Definitely some questions for the first time is how I would read it.

I've always thought he was a bit overrated purely because the media always make him out to be one of the best CDM's in the world yet all his managers have been unwilling to play him as a lone CDM - he always needs a partner. At West Ham, Moyes always played Soucek beside him and any games Soucek missed, Rice looked totally exposed with someone more attacking like Paqueta playing beside him. Same with England where Southgate always insisted on playing Phillips or Henderson beside him rather than a more attacking player like Mount, Bellingham or Foden. And now we are saying the same thing happen at Woolwich again where he needs a CDM partner.

Its no coincidence that every team he's played in have been very defensive and passive. All 3 of West Ham, England and now this Woolwich team played a similar style. Very defensively set up with two holding mids but nowhere near enough fluidity in the build up or creativity in the final third.

I think, as with us under Poch, a 'normal' team (i.e. not financially doped) only gets one or two chances to win the Premier League before they start to get old / pick up injuries and naturally drop off a bit.
