I'll just leave this here, adjusted for inflation 1992-2021.

I'd imagine we have some very large sales adjusted for inflation.

Even Solanke was because of a fucking clause in the contract and that was still peanuts compared to most other teams...who else was in for him again?

What are we doing here?

Dudu was talking about us competing now for fees but not wages.

Point was thay we've never really competed, fuck sake half of those in the list are pre-2001.
Gotcha.

Although, we do have a bit of a rep for our highest signings being a bit shit. Maybe we should spend less?

I think we mainly buy good players and hope they become great, rather than buying great ones.

So relative to the going rate for players in the market, our three biggest acquisitions of the Premier League era (and 6 of the top 10) were under Sugar.

Generational talents like those you have mentioned will always want to move on from us. The likes of Real, Barcelona and Bayern will be lights to a moth due to their history and power. It’d take us a couple of decades of being the top, or one of the top teams in Europe for us to enjoy a similar reputation.

I do think though that we tend to seem to collect players who are happy to get to the Spurs level and then relax. I’m not wholly convinced that’s a fault of the owners or Levy, maybe just because that’s the market we are operating in. What could Levy do to show ambition to the players? Provide them the very best facilities? A wonderful stadium to play in? Buy them for large transfer fees? He’s doing all that. Would they be more ambitious if he paid them more? I’d suggest the opposite. Should he make a speech at the start of each month? Again, I’d say that would have the opposite effect.

I’m asking honestly, as I’m never sure what the owners could do to show this ambition everyone says they are lacking. And I mean in practice, not just a vibe or attitude.

I'd say, to show ambition he needs to sign 1 or 2 elite players. Rather than seeing it as competition, our squad would be enthusiastic to be playing with top top players.

Right now, it's a lot of Danny Rose moments - you have to google the players we sign.

Want to show the world we mean business? Go sign Martinez or Wirtz or Kvaratskhelia or Kimmich. Why didn't we loan Sane instead or Werner?

The last player we had with any sort of pedigree was Perisic.

Statistically dubious. Rio Ferdinand’s signing for Man Utd would not be like spending £188m today. You see that pattern of players from the early 2000s featuring at an unusually high rate for all clubs.

In think the reason is that 25 years ago, the spread of transfers was a lot tighter. Today who have a few extreme outliers. Neymar is the most expensive transfer and almost twice as much as the third highest signing. If you’re pegging everything relative to the most expensive signing then anything pre 2017 is going to be overinflated compared to transfers since.

Can’t be bothered to look too closely but the counterintuitive results are probably a result of methodology.

agree dismiss it as it doesn’t suit your pro Levy agenda. He’s doing a fine job and his ambitious strategy will surely see us win the PL next season
