Transfers January Transfer Thread 24/25

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

They need to qualify for Europe every season just to survive. It's an all your eggs in one basket strategy and they are backing themselves to win something big for it to be sustainable over a longer period.
They are banking on it to pass PSR not survive, their owner would be pumping in more money if they could. They've shown they are apt at dodgy PSR transfer fees.

Slight difference but an important one when looking at their longer term prospects.

They should be focusing on upper their revenue if they want to make a dent in the league, not trying to wheel their way around PSR.

Newcastle are starting to understand it, they're looking to build a bigger stadium next to St James' park which will increase their revenue.

Bloody hell what a name, Levy must be giggling!

Even better than that Asian guy Ange wanted, Kan-Ga Roo!

With Mason Melia coming in and Veliz probably being sold this summer, when Romero leaves us, we will have no argentinians. First time in a long time. We need to find some argentinians. Whats Federico Redondos son up to? I remember he was an up and coming CDM?
Don't think we'll sell Veliz this summer, probably loan him out somewhere he'll play so he can regain a bit of value before we offload him. Very strange he wasn't recalled and reloaned in Jan.

They can't to the level they need.

They had protests and reduced crowds when they set CL prices at £50-75 (a discount for us) and only have local appeal. Any increase will be dodgy inflated sponsorship

Man City rejected Tottenham’s enquiry to sign their £25m player just a few days before deadline day

Sources also told TBR Football on Thursday that Manchester City rejected £30 million bids for McAtee from several German clubs in particular such as Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig, Mainz and Stuttgart — which indicates that Ange Postecoglou’s side were not the only side interested in signing the 22-year-old.

Man City snubbed Tottenham’s approach to sign James McAtee

But Manchester City had no interest in selling the Salford-born attacking midfielder as they feared he could become a superstar in the same vein as Cole Palmer.

City rejected Chelsea’s approach to sign Nico O’Reilly for the same reason as they believe the Englishman has a bright future ahead of him.

The Athletic have now revealed that Manchester City informed Tottenham that they had no interest in selling any senior player during the transfer window, including McAtee.

Nottingham Forest were “huge admirers” of McAtee as well but they were told the same by Pep Guardiola’s side. Guardiola has not just publicly but also privately reiterated that McAtee is good enough to play for Manchester City — despite starting just three games in all competitions this season.

Ange Postecoglou indirectly asked Tottenham to sign James McAtee

Postecoglou asked Tottenham to sign a versatile forward and McAtee certainly fits the bill.

While the highly-rated wonderkid is an attacking midfielder by trade, he often played as a right-winger on loan at Sheffield United last season and has even played as a false nine for City.

Furthermore, McAtee seems to have an eye for goal, scoring five for Manchester City this campaign despite starting just three games in total.

Not really sure where his best position is, but now they’ve signed Marmoush and he probably gets less game time 2nd half of the season, should defo keep an eye on him.

Maybe I could give another take on Villa and their owners.

They are prepared to gamble/take incredibly high risks with relatively low odds that Villa either get enough revenue (mainly from european competition) to over come psr, or if they do not that they pay huge fines for failing psr.

For reference, when they first bought club, Villa were in Championship. They gambled by not selling Grealish to Spurs (agreed with old owner at £30m plus add ons) that with Grealish in the Villa side that they get into PL (worth £100m+ , but odds of getting out of Championship were not high). They did get out of Championship and then sold Grealish for £100m to ManCity to help rebuild their side. The huge gamble paid off enormously. And they are continuing with high risk strategies now.

All the rumours of Werner moving on didn't come to anything - but maybe that's due to his injury which he should be recovered from in next week or two.

MLS Primary Transfer Window runs from Friday, January 31 to Wednesday, April 23 2025, so he could go to MLS.

There will not be space for him in Spurs EL squad in 2nd half of season but there is room for him in PL squad - would you keep him as a last resort to play in PL - he still has speed but no end product - or offload him asap assuming Tel and Odobert can use all his minutes, , and if necessary play Ajayi as a sub too.

Many of us follow England Youth games, McAtee is a podium level talent, easily stands out amongst many others who are quickly rated as £50m+ players like Dibling and Gittens.

Sadly, we likely can’t get him, but I think he is a much nearer cert than almost all U21’s down (Moore is exquisite potential, but too young to know if his game matures, as it should).

English youth is a ridiculous talent factory these past 5years now.

I think their end game is waiting out PSR to die. They are only passing now due to a few suspicious deals, I don't see where their growth to compete with own revenues comes from.

They have done well to get from the championship to where they are now but tbh I don't rate Villa in the slightest.
If Spurs got Rashford, Ascensio and Disasi in this window we would all be fuming. Their revenue to wages for the quality of players they have is absolutely mental and that project will fall in the next year or two for sure.
They got the CL last year because we were shit essentially as were the other teams who should be challenging for it.

Despite our crap league season I would take our future above theirs in a heartbeat.

In the MLS with the dwarf twat. Not really pulling up any trees.

Be good to sign some Englishmen first...or give Archie that DM post.

Absolutely correct.

There has been a steady stream of young English players going to play at european clubs, which really got under way with Jaen Sancho going from ManCity to Dortmund as City wouldn't play him - and the reason why Dortmund were interested is that the PL academies are churning out many times the number of high class talent than any of the european club equivalent academies. And there is the chance the european clubs can cash in by selling a more developed youngster back to PL for a high price as Dortmund did selling Sancho to ManU.

Incidentally Spurs tried to get Sancho bundled in as part of deal of Walker going to ManCity but ManCity refused.

Spurs academy has rebounded after Poch's 'no loan ' and rarely playing youngsters policy followed by Conte's hatred of anything other than tried and tested veteran players (Mourhino to be fair helped our youth), and we have a conveyor belt of players coming through now, and although not necessarily world class, I think a number are good enough to be squad players and as List B/Club trained or u21's add numbers to our squad too. A short list of the players who might fit into the squad over the next year or two :

Alfie Devine (age 20) - 2 years on loan currently at Championship level club in Belgium. Better as a deep lying midfield player, can play AM too. Versatile mid who could play either Bissouma or Bentancur type roles

Jamie Donley (age 19) - first year at L1 Orient but absolutely killing it now after being the GOAT for Spurs u21's who won PL2 last year. Scores and creates assists for fun - ideal understudy for Madison and Kulusevski.

George Abbott (age 19) - Captained Spurs u21's to PL2 victory last year as RB where overlooked a bit for the other stars. This season at L2 Notts County he's become one of their top players taking them from near bottom of division into play off places. Their fans hope to keep him in L1 next season although already Champioship clubs are looking at him. Plays DM for Notts County but can get forward - 4 goals and 3 assists so far - plus can play full back either side.

Ashley Phillips (Age 19) - Played in Championship for 2 seasons as CB (usually not a position for youngsters) , currently Stoke fans think he's their best CB and one of best in Chamopionship. E u19 captain

Luka Vuskovic (age 17) - Tearing up the Belgian top division where he's widely thought to be best CB in the division, not to mention his ability to score 6 goals in 22 matches so far. Given his youth it maybe better to give him a season in Championship before coming to Spurs, but a great decision to have

And that's on top of Mikey Moore (still only 17) who is starting a few games now and will only improve next season at Spurs with strikers Dane Scarlett and Will Lankshear both still developing.

And in younger age groups, a few more coming through who may get sub opportunities but are a year or two away from joining the above list.

We will have 3 Club Trained positions to fill (Austin fills the 4th) in uefa squads and can have unlimited List B players, so in short term its easy to see maybe 4 or so youngsters in squad who can gradually be developed (as Gray and Begvall have in first half of season) to add genuine quality but also shear numbers to avoid the worst of an injury crisis like we have had this season. So there's genuine reasons to develop our own youth - and once every few years we have a chance of finding a world class player.
