Nico Williams is the one that bucks the trend. He's twice the player of his older bro. I think maybe the only one in football.
There are many who want Spurs to buy a quality DM to shore up the MF and to keep the DM spot warm while Gray develops into a EPL quality DM.
First of all, there are very few top class DM around and those few are not available or will cost a fortune or will join a bigger club than Spurs (or at least a club that pays more). Look at Nico González. He cost Man City £60m and he's not even a "typical" DM but just as much a CMF. Barca (very stupidly let him go for paltry £8,5 in 2023, because Xavi didn't use him regularly and then let him out a loan to Valencia). He's never played for Spain.
And no quality DM will join Spurs if they are meant to keep the DM spot warm for Gray.

Thus I won't mind putting Gray there now and see how he does there for the rest of the EPL season as Spurs really have nothing to play for now anyway (but they still need a few more points to make sure they won't get relegated).

no way was Simone Inzaghi better than Filippo and Diego Milito was probably a better player than Gabriel (although obviously different positions).

I can't see anyone paying that much for him and Man City anyway will have Rodri and Nico as DM from next season. But it annoys me that Spurs, despite of repeatedly were linked to him, did not go for him...
But quality DM's will not come cheap.
