Djed Spence’s career revival at Tottenham Hotspur is one of the best stories to emerge from the 2024/2025 Premier League season.
Until the ongoing campaign, it seemed like Spence had made a blunder by signing for Tottenham in the first place.
Matt Wells always knew Tottenham star Djed Spence was perfect for Ange Postecoglou’s system
The former Nottingham Forest defender is impressing week in and week out in a Spurs strip, with Gary Lineker tipping Spence for an England call-up as well.
The 24-year-old is in the form of his life and not many English full-backs are in better form than him currently.
According to a report by Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold, it was Matt Wells who has been “championing” Spence since the summer as he always felt the versatile full-back was a perfect fit in Ange Postecoglou’s system.
Recently, Postecoglou admitted to testing Spence in order to determine whether he was ready to play for him and the report does mention that the former Celtic boss kept a close eye on him.
Furthermore, it has been claimed that Spence, who has been lauded by Dominic Solanke is a popular member of Tottenham’s squad as well.
Tough times don’t last, tough people do and the Spurs fan favourite is an embodiment of that being the case.
What people close to Djed Spence have said about his attitude at Tottenham
People close to Spence have revealed that in the past, his introverted character has meant others have got the impression that the player does not have the best attitude.
Journalist Jay Harris stated: I’ve spoken to people who know him quite well, and they’ve said that Spence is a bit introverted, and he can be quite aloof. And so there are times where people probably have misinterpreted that as him not caring or him having a bad attitude. But I think what we’re seeing before us now is a 24 year old who was a young boy.”
“He’s a young man now. Apparently during his time in Italy with Genoa, that was quite a powerful experience for him because Leeds didn’t work out for a number of different issues but mainly because he had quite a bad knee injury, which ruled him out.”
However, Spence decided to knuckle down and put the graft in upon his return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium from his loan spell at Genoa.
“I think, for two and a half months, three months in total. So he’s gone from barely getting a game in the Championship to he played at the San Siro twice with Genoa. He played against Juventus away for Genoa. And so he’s returning to Spurs and he’s thinking, wow, if I want to kick on with my career at the highest level, I seriously need to knuckle down. He did that.”
Matt Wells, who could have replaced Postecoglou also deserves massive credit for always backing the talented Spence.
I'm still annoyed with Kyle Walker for the back pass, from the half way line, at Anfield. Were you not picked by a coach once in your life and have never been able to let it go since?
Seriously, what is this weird obsession with Harry Winks getting chances to play about?

I bare a grudge.
Winks getting 200 games for Spurs I will take to my grave.
If you really want to know why Spurs have stopped winning trophies ask yourself if Winks would have been tolerated for that long by Woolwich, Chelsea, Liverpool, City or United?
Even West Ham would have fucked Winks off after 100 games.
One of the worst Spurs players ever to get more than 50 games.
Winks should babysit for Harry Kane and his Mrs for the rest of his life for how Kane's goals carried his shabby little useless arse for as long as he had to.
Good post.I'm really pleased that Djed Spence has finally got his head straight and knuckled down , focused his attention and sorted out his attitude . He was overlooked by 3 managers because his head wasn't in the right place . Now he's one of the first names on the team sheet . He has stood in for Udogie at LB , and done a great job . He has played at RB in place of Porro and is arguably the better of the 2 players . What a shame he didn't apply himself a few seasons ago , I guess better late than never . But "What A Player He Is Now"..............COYS
She looks so young! You dirty old man!
It's so obviously this. Ange was a fucking idiot for not bringing Spence on board sooner. The Ange comments are particularly cringe.
Did he loan him out last season, agree a 8m euro option and not pick him for the europa league squad despite having 2 full backs because he rated him and always thought their was a player there? did he fuck.
He didnt rate him and eventually played him out of necessity due to injuries.
And now Postecoglou is lying to save face? It's so obviously this. Ange was a fucking idiot for not bringing Spence on board sooner.
He'd hardly be the first football manager to do so.
Be better IMO if he just said ''I underestimated Djed'' it's as if he thinks the supporters are stupid and will be fobbed off with any old crap.
It could be even easier than that.Be better IMO if he just said ''I underestimated Djed'' it's as if he thinks the supporters are stupid and will be fobbed off with any old crap.
Sure but a lot on here were asking why he wasn't included in the first stages of the Europa League. He played well against Coventry in the cup and many wanted him more involved in the Premier League then too.It could be even easier than that.
He could say everyone has underestimated him which wouldn’t be a lie
A Galah.
I was one of them. It was ridiculous even without the benefit of hindsight, made worse by the pile up of injuries.Sure but a lot on here were asking why he wasn't included in the first stages of the Europa League. I wonder whose decision it was to bring him in in the first place?I was one of them. It was ridiculous even without the benefit of hindsight, made worse by the pile up of injuries.
Djed’s career (up to his emergence) has been full of managers either sniping about him or not playing him regularly. When he got a good run at Forest he was a big part of their promotion and we signed him off the back of that. Warnock (cunt) couldn’t resist having a pop and Conte waded straight in the his “club signing” tantrum.
I actually feel for the lad and am pleased as punch that he’s finally got the chance to shut his doubters up.
