He was adequate in multiple positions, a great asset to an international tournament squad. A player who can cope at CB, RB and CM is very useful to that.
He was strong and passably quick. He wouldn't be totally left for dead but nowhere near the links of a King or VDV.
He was though, never what I would call an intelligent player. King was intelligent. Toby and Jan were intelligent. They could anticipate moves and cut out the danger before it even happened.
Dier just stands people up and tries to block their direct route to goal. Doesn't really tackle, doesn't really intercept passes. He's maybe another Dawson +5% or so. Dawson looked very good when King was there. Dawson didn't when King wasn't.

Yes, King and Toby were both far better at reading the game - no doubt.

Jan needed Toby to be able to do what he wanted to do. Before Toby joined us, Jan would frequently advance out of position to attack or chase the attacker out wide - Toby partnered with him well because he read the danger in those situations and moved across to cover.

I've never suggested Dier was world class or as good a defender as King or Toby, but far too many people on here hate on him because of his last couple of seasons and forget he was an important part of what made us solid in Poch's initial formation.

Jesus, tell that to the Paralympian who has worked their entire life to get to that position and overcome a million hurdles to be there.

Sport is about lots of things, its not just win or lose and there are victories found in many elements of it.

Edit: Are Bodo Glimt failing in their objective if they don't win the Europa League? 4k stadium, miniscule budget. Obviously not, they're doing fucking incredibly and their fans will remember it for years and years ...
This is a daft line that Richard Arlison and a few other Ange defenders trot out.

Yes, in a sense not winning a trophy is failure. But there are many types of success beyond winning "the trophy". Was it a success for Tottenham to go undefeated at our last season at WHL? Is it a success if a youth team who are getting gubbed train hard, improve their technique, fitness and cohesion and go on a winning run, even if it doesn't win them a trophy? Of course it is. And it's nothing to do with a loser's mentality. Quite the opposite.

It's laughable in truth. And actually betrays pretty limited life experience

Seems more of a loser mentality to me to realise that you're not going to finish first and then just say "oh fuck it then, might as well be 17th...".

The aim at the start of every season should be to win 38 games, the moment you take that first loss, then the goal should become 37 wins, and so on... A winner doesn't lose one and then give up and go home, they wouldn't be sat in 16th with 19 defeats and just shrug it off as a waste of time either. A winner would be furious and determined to win the next one to save as much face as possible.

i'm sorry but i just don't get some of you. a fucking europa league cup against minnows in no way erases the pain of losing every other fucking match. it's been 18 months of misery and you guys are gonna go dance around after beating up on the hobbits and the elves? it's just pathetic. there have been many years where many didn't even want to qualify for this shit cup and now we're gonna act like it's worth losing 20+ fucking matches for? gtfoh.. i want to win every week. i want entertainment. i want to talk to my friends about football and banter with the rivals and shit on the losers. i've not been able to do that for months and now i'm supposed to act like winning the middle earth cup makes it all worth it? to me, it's you guys advocating for this cup that don't know what football and sport is all about. pathetic

IF we win, it'll forever be tarnished with the fact that we had a dickhead of a useless manager at the helm and the worst league form many fans have ever experienced. And we're 40+ years old.
There's no way in 20 years I'd look back and say "that was some side that was"
I was 3 when we won it in 84 so I can't say I remember it. But a quick look at the D1 table that season shows we finished an underwhelming 9th. But we won 17 games lost "only 15"
Compared to this season where it feels like we've lost all our games. (we haven't, it just feels like it)

OK - Ricky Bobby 😄

"Dad, you told me if you're not FIRST you're LAST!" ...
"Hell Ricky I was high when I said that ... it doesn't make any sense at all ..." 🤣

I quoted that yesterday. Fed up with the attitude there's no point replacing Ange unless the next guy wins us the league.
That's just plain dumb. Ain't no escaping it, accepting a bottom 4 finish because we can't win the PL is ridiculous. Utterly absurd mentality.
If the next guy is here 2 seasons and stabilizes us back to a top 8 club. Great.
And the guy after him pushes us back to a top 4 club, brilliant.
That's A way to get back. sticking with this muppet is not.

Come to think of it all games that cannot possibly impact the title in all divisions should not be played (there are many such games at this stage of the season). Why should they be played? No one playing has any chance of winning the title ffs.

I'd go further and say that in each division going forward, once a team mathematically cannot win the title/league, all such teams' fans should have to hold their outstretched thumb and index finger against their foreheads, in a gesture describing an "L" for loser, for the duration of all home and away fixtures.

This is no more ridiculous than fans suggesting "we should just keep Ange because no one else is going to win the league"

Nice participation trophy we got after the final too.

We can keep it next to the “great attitude in class” badges we got in primary school

Fuck me mate I thought I was miserable. If you can't find any joy or success in the sport other than in winning a trophy you may as well stop now along with 99% of fans..

Our trophy record is a joke for a club of our size/stature .. its important we fix that. But that CL run was incredible, its not comparable to a fucking participation trophy .. we beat Ajax, Dortmund and City.

Your lack of knowledge hurts my brain
I honestly think you would struggle to coach an under 12 team
Much like Ange, I am not a coach. But I can spot a weak link in a team a mile off.
Season ticket holder, my man

After Covid, the only aim in my life was to put money in the bank not in Danny‘s pockets
I swear you said the total opposite of that recently.
I can only assume if you were at games that Dier played, you were all in on lining Levy's pockets by buying a LOT of beer.
Just to tie up a continuity error though, Covid was after the 16/17 season.

It was incredible.

That doesn’t mean we won the Champions League though
