But I can't help feeling that while there is something in prioritising competitions, sacking off the league is at some point going to cost us (relegation ?) and may be hard to repeat the trick of sustaining a winning mentality when getting battered every week.
I don’t think he sacked off the league in Jan like he claims. I think that that is a clever smokescreen by Ange to excuse our terrible league campaign. I cannot imagine Levy would let him deliberately lose league places that would have cost us pl prize money on the gamble that we would win the Europa League.

Playing once a week even with an extra game is not the same as managing weekly additional midweek games - surely you get that?
OK but are we going to pretend Palace are contending on the same playing field with regards to resources, then? Surely we should be much better set up to contend with 2 games a week than a side like Palace? Are we going to pretend that everything Ange does with Spurs and everything Glasner does with Palace is exactly like-for-like? Surely you get why that's silly?

The airport was strange yesterday . Spurs and United fans equally subdued I thought , Spurs fans because we were all hungover and suffering from wildly celebrating our glorious victory , United fans were just depressed and miserable. Even though I was barely functioning seeing their glum faces made me feel better than the Nurofen that’s for sure

We have played 59 games this season
Palace have played 47

Im not the one being silly

Glassner did an amazing job winning the FA cup - but its not the same as managing a run in the Europa, with midweek games trying to balance the squad through a mountain of injuries.

both are great achievements, but glassner did have an easier job managing his first team in the FA Cup and because of its schedule could put out strongest 11 week in week out.

I have to say I have been Ange out for a while - the league form has been utterly appalling however, I don't think Levy can sack a Manager who has just won the EL trophy. If it was mutual agreement and AP walked off into the sunset then it could happen but he seems to want to stay.
If it was for someone like Silva, Glasner or Frank it would be suicide imho and they would be in a losing position off the bat.

Theres one thing I don't get about Ange and our league form. Why on earth hasn't he tried to tactically change at any point in the league when this has worked in big games in cup comps - I just cannot fathom why he hasnt?
With 4 or 5 first 11 players out why not try it then?

Even in game changes to keep the FBs home when leading - I just cannot get my head around it.

Good post Hulkster but I'm sure our new appointments have been planning for an EL win to upset the apple cart.
Wait for a Summer announcement that he makes saying he has received an offer from Brisbane Roar he can't turn down and our board reluctantly agrees to release him

This conversation is frankly ridiculous, and boring now. Palace beat 2 better sides in City and Villa than we had to face throughout the whole EL, you can talk about 12 extra games but look at the standard of half those sides, Bodo x2, Rangers, Qarabag, Ferencvaros, AZ Alkmaar x3, Elfsborg, if you're telling me the side with the 9th highest revenue in the world shouldn't be well equipped to batter those sides with a 2nd string side and stay competitive in the league on the weekend you're fucking dreaming, Villa manage it with half our resources, Glasner's won the same cup as Ange at a team with 1/5th the resources, and didn't tank the league to do so. He told us all he was chuffed with his summer window, he's headhunted half the players, it was his responsibility to balance the competitions and he failed to do so. I don't know how people aren't angry that he's saying we've been going through the motions in the league since january considering the only actual stiff opposition we came up against in the EL through to the final was Frankfurt, and we beat them with fucking Conteball.

Yes, what Ange is saying about some league and cup distinction in that regard doesn't make any sense. There are differences between the two of course, but it's obviously ridiculous to imply it's possible to play one way in a cup and not possible to play that way in the league. at least he seems to be implying that - it's quite hard to tell what he means, and I don't think he knows either.

It’s an open secret that Ange sets out the playing philosophy and then looks for his coaching team to instil this in the players.

Do you think a scenario where Ange stays in post, but there are whole scale changes made in the back room staff and calibre of assistant coaches, be considered as an alternative to the status quo or a completely fresh start?

I hope Levy chooses the first option.

We've seen it before with Ramos. Kept him on too long and it was 2 points from 8 games the following season. Could genuinely see that next season too. Players can talk about how happy they are and how much they're a family and playing for the manager, but that doesn't project out onto the pitch enough. Just says to me they're too comfortable. We've lost 25 games in all comps this season. Winning a major trophy doesn't negate that for me. Some of the results this season have been a disgrace, Ipswich, Leicester at home, Everton, Tamworth, wolves home and away.

Again, this doesn't mean I'm not grateful to Ange and will always have love for him for getting us over the line. But I don't think he's the guy to get us to the top. He's certainly never going to win the pl and/or CL in the next 5 years.

As much as people over-egg the pudding with this, but Ramos did have his strike partnership picked apart at the end of the window. We didn't just have Frazier Campbell, but we didn't replace Berba and Keane until Redknapp brought in Defoe (?) and Keane.

Granted, Redknapp proved the squad wasn't so bad, and I think a huge part of Ramos' downfall was because he'd lost the squad with the ketchup rules, lack of english etc.

I think Ange is a different scenario to Ramos, AVB, and Poch in the "we should have binned them in the pre-season"

'looks like Ange has his Captain's vote, most of the squad seem to be fully behind him tbf, including Maddison who supposedly hated him according to someone.

I still think i'd take Xavi right now though, Ange can walk away as a Legend rather than be on rounds of abuse again next season.
But if the squad harmony is so strong right now then i doubt there's much Levy can do except let him continue.

In that case i'd maybe suggest new talent on the coaching team, ideally mason get's a job in the summer and we can bring in some pretty adept

Glasner is about to extend his contract.

But for argument sake, that is getting closer to the type of profile you would need to stand a chance.

IMO Glasner isn’t worth the risk. Hes won EL but so have we now. Why take a gamble on a sideways step?

It will be interesting on how the club move with this, I don't think you can sack him just to hire a Frank or Iraola or Silva, I think you genuinely need a big name like Xavi so you can justify the sacking.

For Ange to stay he will have to convince Paratici that he will not play the same brainless, reckless football in the league next season. Anyone with any understanding of football can see that it doesn’t work. Even Ange threw it all in the bin to try and win the EL.

Ange and his coaches lack of elite experience will always make me nervous but if he is willing to abandon Angeball and focus on the basics, I’d feel slightly more comfortable about him staying. It’s not ideal to have a 60 year old who is still learning the ropes at this level but it would be something to cling on to. If his pitch to Paratici is just Angeball with a couple of more experienced players, then he can be shown the door.

Xavi without doubt is a big name as a player, but if you take that away surely from a management perspective the other three are much more experienced?
