Manager Ange Postecoglou

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Uhhh again we beat Frankfurt, Bodo Glimt and 16th placed 29% win rate United, mate. Mourinho engineered masterful bus parks against peak Barcelona while down to ten men. They had Messi and Xavi, not Diallo and Fernandes.

Perspective. None of the teams we beat even come close to touching elite.

uhhh... Mourinho had Eto'o, Cambiasso, Zanetti, Maicon...

It's relative of course. But it counts because we still have that squad going into CL next year and I know for a fact you don't rate most of them as most on here don't. Obviously they are better than 17th in the league and for that the manager goes BUT you can't on the one hand say our players are shit and then say winning a European Trophy doesn't count because the opposition are shit. We went into the game without Bergvall, Maddison and Deki. We adapted. That's good Cup management.

Lets be honest even if we'd have been superb in that final and done them by 3 or 4 you really shouldnt be changing your mind on 90 minutes when you have 17 months worth of evidence showing how poor we are. He stood a chance of staying on if we'd have shown more in the league, things like consistancy, clean sheets, more difficult to beat but we've just got worse and worse over time. There is zero cohesion to our play, we're boring to watch, individuals and the team collectively going backwards. There is also zero sign things would improve.
I agree.

It matters how we play in the league, even if we aren't going to win it. Otherwise the vast majority of league games played in every country in the world are pointless. Season tickets should be refunded after it's mathematically impossible for us to win it.

We are a shit watch it's true. Biggest disappointment given all the "we never stop" hype.

I keep reading about how easy and bad the teams we beat were, and then things like shots, xg, touches in box etc. on this forum, not some rival feed.

He got us in the super cup final and Champions League, so for me he deserves the crack at them. Worst case scenario is he gets sacked mid season and we have a bit of a write off year potentially, like the previous 16 season had been in terms of what the game is about - winning trophies, which is never easy.
Is it ultimately though? For players you could say so.

For us? If the week to week is an absolute chore to endure, then what is the point?

I've been supporting Spurs for 30 years, I've seen 2 League Cups and this Europa, I've supported Spurs through George Graham, Christian Gross, and Tim Sherwood.

I was unequivocally not supporting us through those times because of the impending glory around the corner.

If you told me that next season is going to be another 38 game slog of a season with rarely a game to enjoy, but we'd some way or another pick up another silver pot, I'm not sure I'd bother to tune in tbh.

I realise that the last line might seem at odds with having said that I've supported through plenty of shit times, but the expectation is different now. If Ange had done what he's done with the squad that GG, or Gross had, then I'd have nothing but respect for him. For me, he's so detrimental to the development of the squad/players that we are left thinking that the squad full of internationals is barely above relegation fodder and we need a massive overhaul in personnel.

Sherwood, was probably the last time that I felt as apathetic about Spurs as I do right now, and at the time it felt bleak beyond salvage, so right now I'm hoping that the club can do the same again with a change of Manager.

Around the age of 9 kids who are into football learn to dismiss those of their peers who change club to the winning team as "just glory hunters".

Why, if the game is just about trophies, not just support the winning teams of the day?

No one here is not saying the game is not in part about trophies btw (before I get that thrown at me).

The EL win is great. That doesn't mean our performances in the EL aren't fair game for criticism. Because if we play better our chances of winning more are improved!!!

Say we'd smashed EF and Man U by a few goals and played great football, and we'd finished the season with a couple of good league wins. We'd probably only be 15th or 16th, but it would certainly point to Ange having turned a corner and being a fundamentally better coach than many of us thought.

Even if the backs to the wall win against United was better than some on this forum expected, it's still not indicative of a great coach who will take us forward is it?
I don't think he is much of a coach at all.
It seems to me that he's a leader of men, that can inspire and rally a team to fight for him.

He's also clearly capable of letting them know certain games (the league) don't matter and they can lose at will providing it increases the chances of his narcissism being proved right by winning himself (and as a side issue the club) a trophy.

I think after the City game last season he decided the club and fans can happily accept defeats in a certain context - which is true to an extent, bit divides the fans.

I watch Ricky Villa...Tony Parks penalty shoot out...Walker's extra time own goal, pulsating stuff not the drab final this year

The UEFA cup in those days include the second to fourth place teams of the respective league, not the dross you get today

Can we sack the fat clown now

Okay. So you're officially stating that you don't recognise this Trophy as deserved so it doesn't count for you as a spurs fan?

Cool.

For myself, I had a fucking brilliant time in Bilbao - as did the 250, 000 odd spurs fans who came to the parade.

He had some good players. They had the best team ever.

Nobody is saying the European cup doesn’t count.. not even close. He won it. I will credit him with winning it. I’m just not gonna call shithousing Frankfurt and United spectacular because it objectively isn’t. They’re not great teams.

I’m fine with the approach, it worked, but I will give the proportionate amount of praise for the teams we beat. Spectacular is when we knocked out the 100 point City team in the CL. Calling beating Frankfurt by a goal spectacular muddies the term.

I won’t even include Bodo..

It's terrible, isn't it, to have a manager that has no flexibility with tactics as the situation arises.

Selective flexibility. Might not have been a laughing stock in the league if he'd have not rocked up from the third world of football wondering why the most decorate managers in european history didn't just relentlessly try to score goals without any defensive consideration

I'm pretty confident we can finish top half next season at least with him and Champions League football.

Maybe it won't be good enough if we are out all the cups sitting 10th and he rightly gets sacked. But you can't pretend he isn't massively responsible for the cup win, super cup final and Champions League qualification.

I can guarantee you we can't.
He hasn't been any good in the league since the conclusion of his honeymoon period.

Fair enough.

Dunno why everyone's banging on about the manager when we should all be focusing on the massive great holes in our squad - let alone the overall quality. Let's hope for a big transfer window.

What if the kit launch tomorrow is Ange wearing the new kit for

Did they win a European Trophy? No. Did they provide good league seasons? No.

Trophies won by Harry Redknapp at Spurs: 0
Trophies won by Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs: 0.

Brilliant league seasons. No fucking trophies.

I have now witnessed Spurs win a European Trophy live. Nothing else matters right now. I'm sad for you that you don't understand this.

I'm also pretty sad at this affair of things.

To me it seems that people do not understand context of things at all. Like for example difference between trophy and trophy. Saying "I have now witnessed Spurs win a European Trophy" and putting down Poch for 0 trophies is kind of weird.

He got us so freaking close in Champions League. You know, the most high profile and high level competition in the world. All while still being competitive in the league too. While under Ange we won Europa League. Which is so incredibly much weaker than CL that it is shocking. It is like saying that winning Championship is somehow better than to be 2nd or 3rd in EPL. That is plain wrong or overly simplistic. Just saying that trophy for sake of trophy is all that matters makes me think that so many fans would literally go around bragging about becoming U12 master in local spelling bee.

I've supported the club for longer and through more trophies, and whilst the FA Cup meant everything, and Ramos' league cup was still a disappointing season, we were previously
regarded as a 'cup team' , so poor league form happened but I still had confidence in the cups.

The past 10+ years I haven't felt like we're a cup team that could win something. I knew we would get dumped out of every cup, but maybe that could change again and could once again see us as a realistic cup threat in every competition.

That only happens with managers that are allowed and take the cups seriously.

I was specifically told and said so here months ago he would not be judged on one game against Man United, no matter the happiness people derived from the win

I remember when Poch first said it wasn't about winning trophies but being able to consistently put yourself in a position to win them that mattered.

Many were pissed at this because they seemed to think he was disrespecting the FA and League cups but I always agreed with him because cup runs are nice but league position is the true marker. I still generally agree with this BUT a European Trophy is a big fucking deal and if it comes at the cost of league position for one year I'm more than happy with it.

BTW: When Poch got us to the CL final it came on the back of an end of year collapse in league form that would carry on into the next season and get him sacked.

Also Poch's 11 was lightyears better than what we have now.
