It's hard to believe it took Fergie three seasons to win a trophy (whilst finishing 11th) and 7 years to win a title. The first 4 or 5 years was about overhauling the squad and building a winning culture at the club. In the modern game he'd have not seen out his second season.

Also had to deal with a big drinking culture at the club. Didn’t he also finish second in his second sesson

The ITK was the reason I joined SC a while ago. I know now, and probably knew back then, that most of it was bullshit but it was just a bit of fun with transfer rumours during the summer when not much else is going on. Just got to take things with a pinch of salt.

But fuck me, they're really treated as some sort of gods you just can't question in the slighest. Just a general "that doesn't make sense to me" and people get furious and wonder how you dare question the ITK. It's also fascinating how they manage to find the most sensitive people on earth to become ITK. Most messages get like hundreds of positive ratings but if they get one negative rating (most often completely accidental) they will lose their shit and act like "OMG, how can you neg rep me?! I'm not posting anymore!!!!"

I’ve got a feeling they’ve realised the game is up on the “itk” front now. Nobody on there posts anything that even represents a 1 on the bullshit scale. They’ve change to a “so and so mentioned it back of house last week but couldn’t share” which Is obviously bollocks. Plus condescend any info posted anywhere else. Those that run it hate this forum, presumably because we actually have fun and don’t take it all seriously than them posting passive aggressive shit in every thread. All the decent posters left to either here or gave up.

Edit: I just checked and my blocked list on there has 37 people on it. Suspect it wasn’t for me!

This dude, Frank, is supposed to be odds on our next manager and I haven’t been convinced by anything about him. It would be his first time at an elite club and we have been the scene of many a drowned manager out of their depth. Postecoglu just being the latest.

I wish someone on this thread would make a compelling case. I’m all ears
YOU'RE all ears?

hes got an equal or better record than Poch at Saints, or Howe at AFCB before going to NUFC.

One of those became our best manager for 30-40 years, the other has taken barcodes to CL for the first time since Sir Bobby R god knows how many years ago.

Very good tactician

2nd smallest wage budget in PL

I don;t know how compelling you need this, but he's obv way better than what weve had last 2 years

My take :

Player manager , Being statesman for the club , Fan engagement

Ange : Great in all 3
Frank : Player manager as well.... , humble and always carries himself well and represents club well , brilliant with fans

For me, in these 3 areas , Frank will more than match up to Ange

Philosophy

Ange : Has his philosophy as we know

Frank : Opposite , no philosophy.
Played possession based football to secure 3rd and promotion while in championship. Direct & Counter attack in PL. Pragmatic. He plays the game based on what hand he has but makes the play with who is his opponent.

During Crisis :

Ange : Just couldnt deal with Injury crisis
came out of crisis, forsaking his philosophy in EL . He did win

Frank : Had Toney banned for 10mths + 14 injuries in squad, with 11 requiring surgeries in 2023/24. League position fell to 16th but still finished 13 pts above relegation zone, with never really getting in trouble.
Whats best part is, when Toney left, he changed his style of play to counter attack

Young Players development :

Ange : Did give chances to Gray, Bergvall, Spence. But most of them got their opportuniry by chance than plan . Flip side only had 2 yrs.
Frank : Developed Watkins, Toney, Mbuemo, Wissa, Benrahma, Lewis Potter , Damsgaard....Raya (his GK style changed in Brentford big time)

Europe & Winning :

Ange : Ofcourse done a lot and won a lot here , though many may not give him the credit. He did struggle even with Celtic to juggle Europe & league

Frank : No Europe before. Completely new challenge. He did win playoff to secure promotion with the 14th highest wages in championship. Came up in PL, Brentford never in trouble inspite of them being 2nd lowest wages

Overall :

Frank will have his challenges but overall, he has the best tools in all the linked candidates. He will be a great fit for the squad, club and fans.

I think for a lot of fans, the only compelling case they have is "He's not Ange".

That and "He's managed to keep Brentford in the Premier League"

This time last year he was sitting on 19 Premier league losses with Brentford, who finished in 16th place.

I hope he's a success, but he's suddenly going to have to make a giant leap up.

Yeah I do kind of agree with that. I’ve been saying for about 9 months that I just want a sensible attacking manager and one that doesn’t bore us to death like Conte or set up with ridiculous tactics like Ange which other teams can destroy with ease.

Frank was one of those I instantly thought about as ticking those boxes. Plus he seems a good bloke too and it feels like the right time for him. You never find out until you give them a chance.

Different times. It’s like comparing F1 cars. Or tennis rackets.
Or to put the human touch on it Lap times or speed of serves.
The game moves on.

And the biggest indicator of how much the game has changed is probably how many foreign managers there are these days.

Back then your managerial competition was English, Scottish, Welsh, northern Irish and the occasional Irish manager.

I would be surprised if there were many or any foreign managers in the whole football league in Fergie’s first seasons in the old division 1. I guess Dario Gradi but he was pretty much an Englishman if not on his birth certificate.

No Australians or Danes to worry about taking your job!!

For me the optimistic case is, good coach, PL experience. Eddie Howe was equally low key before Newcastle, but showed his coaching skills could translate to a bigger stage, with better players. A lot hinges on the quality of our recruitment going forward though.

good summary

Howe is a decent comparison too

So if Frank achieves what Howe has at Newcastle, is that enough for everyone?

Is that the club’s targets?
