If we do that well next season (we won't) under Thomas Frank then I'd be extremely happy with that, especially if it looks like he might improve on it the next season. (Although again I don't think he will)

I feel compelled to point out though that this fanciful scenario really that isn't much of an improvement on the season just gone.

Okay an FA Cup final would be much better than struggling past Tamworth, before going out to Villa, and losing League Cup semi-finalists is slightly worse than being losing finalists.

However winning the Europa League is far better than just reaching the last 16 of the CL.

And while there's 10 places between 7th and 17th apart from the prize money there's little material difference, as long as you're not in danger of relegation (which we never were last season).

Overall it's perhaps a better season sure, but I feel Ange might have done something similar if he'd been given the chance.
Are you sure you’re a Spurs fan?

I get El was fantastic. But this idea that there’s no/ little difference between getting battered every weekend and doing well in the league isn’t what a fan of any football club would say. Will you abstain from any discussion on matches once it’s clear we likely won’t win the league and won’t get relegated? Or just chip in that you don’t care if we lose ?

I know, right? Given the injuries, and the focus on the cups last season, 17th is not that much worse than 10th, especially as we were never in danger of going down.

If Frank is such a better manager than Postecoglou then he should be getting a lot more out of the squad, not achieving basically the same.
I think we will get into Europe via the league. And hopefully do something good in Cc/FA. He needs a couple proper players to get top 4 or go deep in CL

I probably could have explained it clearer, but we're 9th and Chelsea are 10th, there's almost nothing in it between the two team (relatively based on the huge amounts we're talking about). However we all know Chelsea managers are better funded than ours. So while we're higher on the list, Chelsea have more disposable funds. Hence why there are 5 club managers (at least) with more spending power than ours. That's an ownership issue though, not a team management issue.

The issue is that the Europa cup is one of the easier trophies to win. We won't have it easier this year. Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea and those A**holes will be in every competition we're in. So we only have to lose 1-0 to a scrappy goal against Liverpool in the final for it to be the difference between success and failure. All in his first season (ref: Ruben Amorim).

Hey, we could finish 7th in the league, lose the FA cup and League Cup finals and lose to PSG in the CL last 16 and people are saying he'd be a failure, in his first season with the team!
A season like that, despite being disappointing because we came so close, would show definite improvement and promise for the following season.

Unless it's a real train wreck like the majority of last season. His 2nd season is where he should be judged.
Similar to your 4th / 5th point there isn't much between us in 5th and Woolwich and Liverpool especially with CL football. It's only really Man U and Man City that are way ahead of us.

Netherthelees a good debate Paul I think we can end it here. A group of fans including yourself are happy to make next season a free hit but there will be another group myself included not willing to accept a transition season.

Unless we invest significantly in the squad, Frank (or Ange, or Mourinho, or Conte, or Superman) will not be able to get us above our ‘wage par’ on a consistent basis. Our ‘wage par’ has slipped a couple of places in the last 2-years from 6th to 8th. Let’s set our expectations once the window has closed, and the squad for 25/26 complete. But with Newcastle and Villa showing more ambition than us on the pitch, top 6 would be over performing.

I don't want to ruin it.
I'm happy we win it.
I just also recognise that we should have. All along. Because even with Ange we were the best team in it.
Fair enough, but that's not how your posts come across. I'm not the only one that feels like you poo-pooed our win and the supporters' reactions. And posting THAT picture was pretty low IMO.
Anyway, let's hope that the new guy, whoever he is, gets the team performing to a better level in all competitions.

Is it low expectation or is it realistic? Over the course of a season, our squad isnt strong enough to compete against Liverpool, Man City, Arse, Chelsea. It's possibly on par with Newcastle and Villa but they're more established with their managers coaching methods. If we break into the top 6 next year it would have to be classed as a success. 7th to 10th would be satisfactory , IF.....there are clear indicators of continuous improvement. Such as a slow start where the season ends strong.
No... 7th to 10th is failure.. but we've had this debate but posted this before realising who I was responding to.

But Frank always over performs so naturally we should apply this to our wage par which means 2nd/3rd is definitely on the table now... no?

Top ten... we should be challenging top four minimum.

??

This is a great point. A lot of people on here think this squad is a top 5 squad and put all this on Ange. Yes, Ange is part of the problem and another coach might have us in 13th or 12th with better tactics and some injury luck. Slot might even have us in 9th or 10th but there is no manager in the world who (along with European football) would have us any higher.

Back up where? Mid table... great... this squad isn't good enough and unless reinforcements arrive next season we will be marginally better due to new manager hopefully being more of a pragmatist. If you think this squad is top six, I'll have some of what you're smoking!!!
