Player Mathys Tel

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

The thing that annoys me about the racial abuse is that it provides the under-performing player with an instant political lever to divert attention away from any criticism. Even before Tel came up to take a penalty, I had a feeling that he would miss. It had nothing to do with the colour of his skin. I just get a very strong Superstar-in-Waiting vibe from him. The moment people bring race into it, they lose all credibility and the player gets victim status.

If we go back to the 2021 Euros Final, I was appalled by the way we failed to put up any real fight in that shootout. We just let a prima donna and a couple of woefully inexperienced players take the penalties and said we "did our best". The racial abuse took the attention away from all of that and Gareth Southgate became a hero for being a "good loser". I know I shouldn't be referencing the Donkey but, in this instance, I think he had a point.

Why can't people just leave race, sexuality, politics and all the other crap at the door and just focus on the football? It's not rocket science.
These damn racists are ruining your ability to throw non-racist abuse at players that have a bad game or miss a penalty.

It’s wild to me that the thing that annoys you about racism is that it provides the player, who probably feels worse than any supporter about his failure, a bit of a shield from criticism.

The thing that annoys me about racism is that it’s a personal attack against people in a way they don’t deserve to be attacked, it’s hypocritical because no one chooses their race or what country they were born into, and that these racist cucks have the opportunity to post this shit all over social media and these billion dollar companies aren’t willing to sacrifice their revenue to combat it.

Of course Frank is correct.

Thing about the internet is it's a refuge for all those socially anathema and ostracised, due to how disgusting their characters are (more often than not, shithead kids).

They can sit in their crusty-socked rooms and feel better about themselves by hating 24/7 on everything and everyone.

Winding people up and throwing their shitty net out to haul in as much attention as possible (negative or otherwise), that they'd otherwise not get.

No way I'd have social media as a footballer.

Just too many nameless, faceless toxic sickos waiting to pollute due to their own twisted issues.

We have a few of those on here.

In most cases it's just people shit posting, I think Maddison did some on social media when he was younger, something about hating Tottenham and calling Bale a monkey.

Yeah, mostly kids talking wild shit from the safety of their basement, free form consequence.

They'll probably find Thomas Frank's comments on the matter amusing. ''I expect the fans to give him a really really really big cheer''. Frank is talking to the fans on behalf of Tel as if matchday will be like a child's pantomime. He seems to be treating Tel as a numpty. Who speaks about a 20yr old like that?

I don't have any problem with how Frank's handled it.

But if I were him would use it to highlight to players to minimise social media due to toxicity.

But isn't ''a really really really big cheer'' a tad childish, he's discussing a 20 year old?

I used to support someone with severe learning disabilities, and when he went to a disco or other such event organized by the local day centre, that's the sort of thing the organizers would say when someone won a prize on their raffle ticket.

A high percentage of people do, it's a very small minority imo.
Racism was much more common 25 years ago from my experiences
