Player Djed Spence

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Now here's the other shoe. We've done a strange I think stupid thing. I think Spence should be switched to the right side forced to learn and get a feel for the dominant part of his game. He is a good left back but with work and training I think he could be a very great right back . I love Porro but no way is the bloke any kind of elite defender hes effectively an offensive weapon only. Spence's horizon has been lowered for simple convenience.

I watched the whole England Vs Wales game - what I did like about Spence in that game was that he was overlapping or underlapping Gordon while drawing defenders towards him while Gordon (who didn't have a great game) was able to be more able to find space in the final third to do Gordon things :D

You could put Spence at RB and Porro at RM on occasion.

Realistically it's much easier to try and hone Porros defensive skills than hope that Djed could develop a crossing or passing ability similar to Porros.

I understand the desire for a defensive back line but you don't find players with Porros delivery and long balls very often. We should continue to use him for his offensive ability because we're not exactly flying in attack at the moment

Romero and Porro are two of the best passers in the team. With a stodgy midfield you don’t really want to take either of them out of the side

Next training session should be tasty.

In reality, he made more sense as an inverted left back going forward in Ange ball but Frank wants them overlapping more so he’s more sensible on the right

But…

His right foot makes him an elite stopper at left back because teams play left footers on the right wing.

I think it’s game specific for Djed. Against Salah or Saka or any other elite inverted RW, I’d start him left back over Udogie but the majority of games where we dominate the ball, I prefer him or Porro RB and Udogie domination on the left flank

Firstly Spence can pass and I fundamentally disagree with that premis Poro has had years trying to develop defensively. The blokes an attacking midfielder in world where they are now all way bigger than him. Id have much more faith in fixing Spence than Porro

Thought he was really good last night although bigger tests will come. His versatility should assure him of a place in the WC squad just as long as he's doing the business for us.

You know you will be accused of making him a scapegoat. That all the manifest flaws are just us bullying him. I watched yesterday desperately wanting him to prove he belongs at that level. Obviously its odd because you dont want him murdering Spence as a Spurs fan...you want something run him, trick him, meg him DO SOMETHING...zip zero. He offered Wales nothing and Spence no challenge at all. You could see Djed trying to make it intresting. Foot on the ball walk little flicks.

His one vs one defending shouldn’t be ignored. For certain games he should play whichever side needs to be nullified

Yeah, I tend to agree. Actually think Spence could well be our best fullback, but he's being asked to be a jack of all trades. Still, he's getting game time, which is the main thing.

Vs Bournemouth for example, Porro got absolutely schooled by Semenyo, but Spence dealt much better once moved to RB.

Exactly. I think we are stalling his development. Id genuinely buy another elite LB preferably Antonee Robinson of Fulham let him push Udogie. Then let Djed become the exceptional rightback he ( with coaching) is destined to be. As for Porro being one of our creative outlets and best passers this says more about the teams need for a Stiler, or Wharton than making a case to be starting him ahead of Spence.
