AI Overview

They haven't stopped giving yellow cards for preventing a free kick, but
there's inconsistency in how it's enforced, leading to confusion. While it's a yellow-card offense for "delaying the restart of play," referees often apply different interpretations, sometimes with a more lenient or harsher approach depending on the specific situation and their judgment. Recent high-profile incidents have highlighted this inconsistency, showing some players getting cards while others are not for similar actions.

Why the inconsistency?
  • Varying interpretations: Some referees may see slight delays as part of the game's flow, while others are strict about ensuring a quick restart is always possible.
  • Difficulty in judging intent: It can be hard for a referee to definitively distinguish between a genuine quick free-kick attempt and a player subtly delaying it to give their team time to position themselves.
  • Lack of specific action: While the "delaying the restart" rule exists, it is not always applied with the same severity as other yellow-card offenses.

What is supposed to happen?
  • The official rule: According to Law 12, a player is cautioned (yellow card) for delaying the restart of play, which includes preventing a quick free kick from being taken.
  • The referee's role: The referee is expected to manage the situation, but in cases of blatant delay, a yellow card is the correct sanction.
  • The desired outcome: The intent of this rule is to ensure a fair and quick restart to the game, and it is often inconsistently applie

Incidentally Blake Philogene and Toju Wellspring both started for a Spurs u18 side in the 2025/26 season opener against Cork City u19's back in July - Sandiford and Sievey both coming on as subs.

Saturday 6 December @ 11.30 - Brighton u18 v Spurs u18 (U18 PL)

Last u18 Squad
D Thompson, Sandiford, Byrne, Tingey, Hardy (Upson 63), Tye Hall (c), Boast (Beggs 74), Feeney, Elliott-Parris (Bangura 90), Williams-Barnett (Muslika 63), Adewole.
Substitute (not used): B Irow.

Spurs are at home to Brighton in the FA Youth Cup, generally regarded as the most prestigious trophy for this age group, so I'd expect some rotation in the squad so its not the same team for both Brighton games.

Other u18 players who might feature who did not play last u18 match include Myrtaj, Tynan Thompson, Moncur, Agyekum, Thomas, Salter, Glancy - and maybe the injured Byfield - plus a few Spurs u16's. So who to rotate is anybody's guess !

Looks like there may be no Spursplay, so might be back to :

Offered... Not signed.

Problem is of course that even signing a contract doesn't do that much - it really only affects the £ compensation if player reneges and decides to go elsewhere.

Had a similar issue a few years ago - hired a guy with a decent increase on his old salary who was on 3 months notice. Called him the week before he was due to join me, to be told by a very embarrassed person that his old firm had make him a huge increase the day before and he wouldn't be joining me even though he'd signed a letter confirming him accepting my firm's job offer.

Nothing we could do. Until the guy steps through the door on the day he's due to join any new employee can be highjacked.
