Player Mathys Tel

Can you give an example of that happening then if it’s not rare? It was 1-0 in a must win game, i've watched a lot of football and that level of stupidity is rare. Trying to clear a ball when its that high up in the air in your own box with a bicycle is very rare! The leeds player has read it and got an easy pen, it's a gimme.
No I can't cite a specific example, but I've seen players clear a ball in the box following a set-piece in any number of ways, the only reason this is being criticised as so monumentally stupid is because the Leeds player steamed in fully cognizant of the situation and headbutted his foot. Had that part not happened and the ball just been cleared unchallenged nobody would have even batted an eyelid.

To claim that you've never seen a defender clear a ball in such a way is at best disingenuous.

Remember VDV in the Europa final? If a Man Utd player had stuck his head on the end of VDVs toe during that would it have been a pen? Would Mickey have been stupid for that?

That you admit the Leeds player has read it and gone for the easy pen, doesn't that strike you as being the equivalent of "leaving a leg out" and "looking for it"? Usually those situations se no pen given and the player on the receiving end being criticised for their action.

I've seen some serious wtf stuff on this site, but your defending of Tel is up there. Like his foot was when he kicked Ampadu's head and conceded the stupidest pen.

You think VDV running back to the line to clear is similar? completely different, VDV cleared in the only way he could, it wasnt an attempt to be flash.

Any decent player with half a brain in their head is going to see Tel shaping up for that nonsense and going to go for the ball as they know it's a guaranteed pen, it's one of the most braindead things i've seen and it's going to possibly relegate us, and you got fans like yourself actually trying to defend it, you deserve relegation.

There's 3 of them for you, these guys were all fortunate though in that no opposition player steamed in and headbutted their feet.

I don't for one second think Tel was trying to be "flash", I reckon he was trying to clear the ball in the best way he felt he could at that moment.

Had the ball been dropping on to the head of the Leeds player and Tel had appeared from nowhere to kick his head off then I'd fully agree that Tel was an idiot, as it was, the ball was dropping onto Tel's foot with the Leeds player nowhere near and them Ampadu inserted his head into the equation, that's Ampadu's fault not Tel's.

None of them are the same, the first one isn't even in the box and the ball doesn't go as high (less time for an opposing player to get there). Walkers is the same as VDV, not sure why you even think they are similar, they are goal line clearances ffs.... Ronaldo the ball comes to him, it doesn't go straight up in the air, again, does not give long enough for an opposing player to get close to draw the foul.

None of them are braindead moments.

So we've moved on from "nobody ever does that" to "well that's different because..."?

None of them were anywhere near a players head. That's the only time it's a "foul"
If you're using those, I'm disappointed you didn't use this

I mentioned that before, but that was "different" too. Apparently nobody ever, EVER, uses scissor kicks to clear the ball in defence. Apart from when they do, and then it's different...

Worth remembering that Ampadu's head was nowhere near Tel's foot either until he sprinted in and put it there!

If it was a foul just for having your boot high, you wouldn't see these

It's only a foul if you kick an opponent with a high boot.
It's not a foul for having a high boot.
Just like it's not a foul if you show your studs.....to no one. You can score a goal with your studs a foot in the air as long as you only kick the ball and don't endanger another player.

My point in this whole conversation so far is that it's unfair to label Tel braindead for this, when he goes to kick the ball there was no head in sight, that the Leeds player actively get's himself in the way of the strike doesn't to me make Tel's action go from fine (like all of these other examples) to not fine.

I disagree myself that this incident should be a foul, just as we were all up in arms under Conte when Sarr was penalised for clearing a ball and the Southampton player jumping in the way of his swing.

Mate, I've defended Tel more than most on here, but this isn't one of those times where it's justified. The ball was up in the air and under no ones control. Therefore, available for challenge. Ampadu did so fairly, whereas Tel did so dangerously. Had Tel jumped to head it, and Ampadu came through the back of him to challenge, it's a free kick to us all day long.

What Tel did is not defendable, but it is forgivable as it was a mistake, which EVERY player makes at some point in a game.

Given our position, it wasn't a wise decision.
The same as VdV pulling the Palace players arm wasn't wise.
Our best chance of staying up is cutting out these brain farts.
If Tel didn't even try to win that ball, at all, there's still only a small chance Leeds gain anything. We have 6 outfield players, Tel, and the keeper in the box to their 4 + Ampadu. We have 2 more on the edge of the box.
The danger was no where near the risk.
I'm not going to beat down on him too hard. But it was very unnessesary.

Fizzing the ball across his own 6 yard box was a way more unnecessary action than an attempted scissor kick clearance, if people want to lambast the kid for being braindead then that'd be fairer to use as a stick.

The outcome of either scenario shouldn't influence your assessment of the initial intent.

You know I was at the far end (South) of the ground, and watching the replay on the screen, my reaction was it should not have been a penalty for the reason you state. But it was alas. It was high feet, but also was a case of the Leeds playing jumping in to the foot.

I still don't even know what that was.
