CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT
Posted by Tottenham Hotspur on 30 May 2014 - 16:00

The Club can confirm today that Tony Parks is to leave our coaching staff and we would like to thank him for his contribution and achievements.

Tony returned to the Club as First Team Goalkeeping Coach in 2008, having previously served as a player between 1980 and 1988, memorably saving two penalties in the 1984 UEFA Cup final against Anderlecht.

A popular member of the coaching team, Tony worked with Harry Redknapp, Andre Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood during his time with us, overseeing the First Team goalkeepers as well as the development of our younger goalkeepers and was last year named Goalkeeper Coach of the Year at the FA Licensed Coaches' Club Awards.

We wish Tony every success for the future and he will always be welcome at the Lane.

Can't say I didn't see this coming after the appointment of Toni Jiménez as our new goalkeeping coach.
Is this a bad thing? Good thing? Or is it pretty irrelevant?

Nothing on Freund and Ferdinand yet then?
Part of me feels for him, sentiment and that, another part of me thinks a full clearance of the old staff could well be a good thing.

I like Freund, his enthusiasm is a real asset. He was working with youth in Germany, so I would be happy if he found himself in our Academy instead of leaving.

So we got rid of the goalkeeper coach of the year for some filthy foreigner...

Edit: Oooops, forgot this...

I think you need to keep one man around that's a clubman. Close to the players and the club.
That man's Freund for me. Hopefully Poch feels the same.

Les is tied too closely with Sherwood isn't he ?
As Lister saying cleaning out the old maybe a good thing?

Seems a bit of shame in as much as TP is probably one of our best coaches out of the lot. But Poch has brought his man with him and these things happen as a result. Hopefully the new guy is even better.

We've had poor striking for years now, if Les goes wouldn't mind at all. Not that he's entirely to blame.

The thing is, if Les was a striking coach along other things he can't teach what he had.

Les would put his diving face into the knees of a keeper if he had the slightest chance of scoring. You can't teach his level of guts.

He's headbutted more defenders than Yosser Hughes.

I love the idea of ex-players being involved in coaching but can't say it has been overly successful. Maybe they are all best suited to be ambassadors, a la Ledley and Gary Mabbutt. The trouble is when it doesn't work out, reputations get tarnished and they are remembered more for their failure rather than their successes. Sorry to see Tony go but don't think he is vital for our future, unless he has got something on Hugo and he could blackmail him into staying!

Hoping Ramsey and Freund stay part of the set up but echoing the sentiments above, kinda hoping sir les departs.

A shame about Parkes - surely there are goalkeeping needs in the development squad?

So much for this then..

First Team Goalkeeping Coach Tony Parks last night won a coaching award at the inaugural FA Licensed Coaches’ Club Awards.

Tony, who famously saved the crucial spot kick as we won the 1984 UEFA Cup final in a dramatic penalty shootout, was chosen from three nominees for the Goalkeeper Coach of the Year award – and collected his
trophy at a ceremony at St George’s Park last night.

The FA Licensed Coaches’ Club Awards recognise coaches from across the game, from grassroots level all the way up to the top flight.

Tony made 49 appearances in total for us between 1982 and 1988 before returning to the Club as our Goalkeeping Coach in 2008, having spent six years working in a similar position with the Football Association where he looked after the coaching of all goalkeepers within the England youth teams.

When it comes to our keepers Gomes started out great. Parks influence was negative.

For some reason Brad was used longer than he should have after signing Lloris. Then Lloris had bad form and neg headlines last season.

IMO getting rid of the old boys network is key since we spent more on a training ground than Swansea did on their stadium. What is the point in millions in facilities if a coach thinks Brad is a better bet than the French captain between the sticks?
