1882 movement...

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

from an outsider looking in and having just seen the stated aims of the 1882 movement in this video

has it been a success? will it continue to be? some positives and negatives?

ive been getting a bit more academic with my research into the modern football phenomenon and am interested to see from those of you who have participated in 1882 and movements like it, if it actually is a successful way to bring about change.

I would have created my own thread but saw this one and decided to high jack it...

Cheers

Positives - has brought the subject of (lack of) atmosphere at the Lane back to the forefront of many peoples minds. The powers that be seem to realise that & have been happy to have dialogue with 1882 & accommodate it outside of premier league matches. When 1882 have attended youth/U21 games the players have loved it & been very compliamentary in interviews & on twitter.
This is what i think 1882 do best.
Negatives, as it becomes more popular it, like anything else, becomes watered down with 'band-waggoners' who dont really appreciate what it is trying to achieve. While they are obviously welcome (more the merrier) it does become more difficult to get spontaneous chants/songs going.

Just my opinion.

On that note, i saw very few of the usual faces at the same on Sat so the fact that the atmosphere was as good as it was is a testament to 1882's influence but perhaps a reason why the second half tailed off a bit & with a less expansive repertoire.

My usual face woulda been there, but I was covered in piss and baby sick at the time... oh the joys of Fatherhood!! (blatant!)
Will try and be there for the next one... just as soon as my lazy layabout 3 week-old son gets off his sorry arse and gets a job to start putting food in our pockets and money in our mouths... oh, hang on... :avbfacepalm:

See you soon - when baby allows!

...he's a July baby, so I imagine that pre-season 2020/21'ish will hopefully be his introduction into the joys of Spurs...

I'm just sick he was born into a world where ArseAnal are FA Cup holders (it bothered me WAY more than it should have!!)
Still, the year I was born, they'd only recently won the double, and I didn't turn to the dark side!!

Aye, but if the atmosphere was better we wouldn't have had that hilarious bit with the guy standing in the upper tier of the West Stand yelling "YID ARMY"

I want to make this very clear before I put my points across. I have not been involved in an 1882 meet/game. I am purely making my judgements on my assumptions. I may be completely wrong but as a fan who has a view from the outside I thought it might be useful to have a different opinion. I wanted to get to the Woolwich U21 game but couldn't.

I have been sitting in the South Upper for the best part of 20 years. I love going to WHL and I always enjoy chanting along. I am not someone who would start a chant but would happily join in.

Now for the my view (rightly or wrongly). I have a perception that most the people who are part of this are more interested in getting drunk and being loud for the sake of being drunk and loud. I don't believe being loud automatically makes you a great fan. My other concern is that many of these people may be complete morons. I went to Villa away and there was a group of young lads in the pub getting more and more drunk and ended up being more trouble than anything else. Don't get me wrong. The songs were great. The songs made me laugh the whole time I was there. I would say the pub would have been boring without it if I am honest. It was when beer starting to be thrown and some of the lads involved were kicked out. This is something I don't want to be apart of.

This was the game the flair was thrown. I was really pissed off when this happen. I was ashamed to associate myself with that behaviour. Everyone single fan is a representative of the club and I thought a few people let the club down.

Another point was when I went to lisbon for the Benfica game. Had a great few days away enjoy the sun and getting very close to going through. It was only one occasion where I felt the club was let down by fans. I was waiting for the loo when two lads didn't fancy waiting and went in the ladies loo and pissed in the sinks. To round it off they thought it would be great to sing a song about pissing in the ladies sink.

Now all this being said. I may be completely wrong about all of this. Like anything, I am sure there are a few bad eggs in the group. This is hard to write because I am not wanting to offend anyone by writing this.

Also I think some of the chants I have seen have been very 'un-spurs' and it doesn't interest me. It comes across as a bit 'try hard'. Shoes up is shit and has nothing to do with spurs. I know Flav agrees on this one according to the pod casts.

I would be interested to hear a response about this. Hopefully I am wrong about my assumptions. It would be interesting to hear the good and bad points from people who have attended 1882 games.

I may well be wrong and I'm sure someone will correct me if I am, but I don't think the games you've mentioned were '1882 games' as far as I'm aware.

I agree with you about all the show waving etc though (although I don't think that happens as much anymore)

As Smolik mentioned, neither of those games were 1882 so it's hard to create a link there.

In my experience of about 5/6 1882 games now, I would say the main aim is to support the team and create an atmosphere. The nature of it means that yes, of course people get drunk, because everybody sort of knows each other from here so it's more like a huge group of friends going to a game, which means more alcohol being drunk than if it were just two friends, or a family. However i've never witnessed any stupid behaviour, it's always in high spirits and jest, and i've not seen any aggression or indecent behaviour. A few crude chants (I find them hilarious but I can understand how some may not) is the worst there's been, the Villa and Benfica games are completely unrelated in my mind.

You couldn't be more wrong. And as Smolik Smolik says, none the the games you mentioned were 1882 games.

Ashamed? Really? One flare in what 10-15 1882 games & you pick up on one incident.

Also I think some of the chants I have seen have been very 'un-spurs' and it doesn't interest me. It comes across as a bit 'try hard'. Shoes up is shit and has nothing to do with spurs.

Shoes up happened twice. Once at Barnet & once at the Lane. People realised that it had served its purpose, ie, got 1882 noticed by the media & it has been consigned to the annals of history. But it was a laugh at the time. As for unspursy songs, please fell free to give us a list of those that are acceptable to the majority of ST holders.

Cheers.

The people you talk of, lets call them the "Sink pissers" have been attending football long before 1882 came about.

Interesting thread though.
Summary (so far), the songs are too repetitive, un-spursy & it has become a chore. The only Spurs fans interested are those that want to be loud & get pissed.

Goodness knows why anyone would want to be loud & drunk at football!

European nights at the Lane are going to be great fun without 1882, the drummer & his three 'songs' on repeat for 2 hours. Lovely. Cant wait.

I haven't been to an 1882 game myself. But I love the fact that when watching on tele you can hear us.

Makes me all warm and fuzzy.

Also the under 21 games look mint. Shame they are often midweek and I live so dam far away.
