1882 movement...

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Nutter-Naylor Nutter-Naylor I'm glad you think I couldn't be more wrong. I don't want the 1882 to be a bad thing. If it adds to the experience then I am all for it.

You are right. The games I mentioned were not 1882 games but my point was more about the types of people I would associate with this kind of behaviour.

I feel I have come across like an old boring fan but its not the case. I enjoy drinking at the games as much as the next guy. I go to the Bill Nic and enjoy the songs etc.

My many point was that when you think of specialised groups of fans you think of violence and general anti social behaviour. I have a Palace mate who hates the Palace group because there all thugs. You just have to look at games in italy and south america to see what groups of fans can be like.

Tbh mate having been at a number of 1882 games since the first one, and also having seen Palace's HF group, there is no comparison at all. They are certainly into dressing up all in black, walking around in a mob as if they're some sort of Lazio ultras group or something... They're still a great thing for their club but just not like 1882 at all...

Thats good to hear. As someone who has been to many 1882 games what are your pros and cons about it? What do you like about it? Who do you go with? Do you chat to the other members? Have you seen anything you disliked?

The only thing that I can remember that was maybe ill advised was people chanting "you used to sing down there" to the Park lane. It was technically no worse than singing "Paxton give us a song" but it rubbed peoples backs up so it wasn't good.

I went to most of them with people from here, met up in a pub and drank for a couple of hours then went to the game and enjoyed the experience much more, because for the last few years I've really hated sometimes when I'm in park lane and there is literally zero atmosphere while the away fans take the piss all game long. I like to stand when watching football and to join in a lot if chants etc, although I've got no problem with people who don't want that - just wish the entire lane wasn't full of people like that. There should be an area for us like minded loud ones too. So that's why I've loved the 1882 games. I took my nephew to one and he loved it, as we walked to our seats at the start of the game (having arrived a few minutes late) everyone around us was doing the shoes off thing which made him laugh. I don't are whether it was "Spursy" it was just a funny song.

I took an armchair fan mate on Saturday and he said he'll come to another one, so that was good.

If people have been pissing in sinks or whatever I don't think that's an 1882 thing. I just see the positives really, people creating atmosphere, waving flags, etc. but I'm glad you've posted your impression tbh cos it's good for discussion.

Just like anything anywhere in the world you get some great people and you get some knobs. I've experienced them both at the four odd 1882 games I've been to.

For example, Maribor was one of the best and most unifying experiences I've had as a Spurs fan in recent memory. The songs, the camaraderie and the general good feeling was exactly what I wanted and felt had missing. I've had that a most 1882 I've attended, even when I've gone on my own, it;s been easy to get chatting to those around me.

In contrast I went to a game last season (think it was AVBs last Europa in charge) and there was a guy who was being stupidly over abusive to one of the stewards and borderline racist at time, masking it perfectly in the surrounding noise. I ended up leaving early as it was just an uncomfortable experience all round.

That's not the fault of 1882, a twat is still a twat where ever you put them. Unfortunately he used the 1882 banner as an excuse to go over the top. Ultimately there's not a lot that can be done about it. 1882 is not a club, it's a movement, something we've sorely needed since the atmosphere at WHL became so dire.

Great reply. Thank you for that.

I certainly am intending to join a game at some point. I will go into it with an open mind. TBH I go to WHL with my dad and sister and sometimes I have wished I had mates who went so I could experience the day a little different. This seems like it could be the answer.

I'm pleased so many people have said positive things about it.

I can definitely say you'll meet some great blokes off here, a funny bunch of characters for sure although at least a couple of the ones I've met up with have cancelled their accounts on here so maybe steer clear of me

It's only when you accept that Spurs have some right twatty fans (as well as acknowledging that EVEN Woolwich have the odd decent one!) that you realise that Club football fans (even ours) represent the WHOLE of society in all its good, bad and ugly forms.

Having been to most of the 1882s, I'd have to say that it really comes into its own for the youth team matches. The chanting can get so much funnier and more inventive, and the players really appreciate the effort. The first team ones are very different - the singing can feel a lot more forced, and I always get the feeling that half of the stadium are just looking at us thinking 'what the fuck are they doing?'. It's still great fun though.

Saturday was admittedly the worst one I can remember - I think as the movement is getting more widely known it's just attracting a lot of people who want to stand there with us and take in the atmosphere rather than actually helping to create it.

As for the drunkenness, pissing in sinks etc - as others have said, it's nothing compared to the average away day!

My sentiments exactly.

All I am saying is that in my opinion I think flares etc puts us /fans/club in a bad light and strengthens the negative stereotypes football receives.

Who cares about stereotypes?

The real stereotype is associating flares with hooligans....its a tiresome argument, but once again I will point to the Bundesliga as living proof that no one gets killed or hurt on a regular basis from having a flare.

In fact, England is probably the only country who bans them.

Is every single other FA in the world missing something when it comes to flares?

Or are we missing out on whats generally known as an atmosphere?

I'm not really that arsed about flares, they look good and that but the smoke's a ballache

1882 was, yet again, great this weekend. Been away too long. Whoever it was who said about the thin repertoire towards the end was right - need some songs for Poch and Dier immediately.

Do we really want a return to the '70's when these abominations ruined the match day experience for everyone except a selfish minority? England is right to take a stand.

The biggest problem that we have is that if it's a first team game then anyone and everyone will buy tickets in that block, not just 1882. The amount of times I've been in the Park Lane and heard people saying, "I didn't realise people would be standing up so often" and the like is ridiculous. Saturday was no different.

The club really need to do a better job of making clear that blocks like 33, 34 and 35 are going to be the more "involved" support, and that includes standing on occasion. Sure, they can't call it a "standing" section for obvious reasons, and whilst calling it a "singing" section is cringeworthy perhaps it would be better for all of us. Especially when 1882 are in that block.

I do feel sorry for the kids who have come along and can't see because an adult is stood in front of him, but there are easy ways of avoiding it; the club need to do more than just saying "Sit down please".

On Sat, rather than taking up my 'seat' in the back rows, i stood with my mate who had a spare. It was around row 14-15 (ish). A young girl (early 20s maybe - young to me!) has bought a ticket for her & her grandad who had been coming to the Lane since the 1960s (but not recently) were next to us. I had to explain to her what the situation was, ie, that they would be standing all game & there would be bad language & singing throughout.
Luckily they were both ok with it but it doesn't help the atmosphere in any way shape or form.
Perhaps, in a similar way to the 'restricted view' warning, there could be an 1882 warning box for ticket buyers to tick before completing their purchase?

I'm assuming that you are referring to last seasons league cup tie against Hull.
I got the complete opposite in terms of reaction.
What initially was confined to Block J,soon expanded to pretty much all of the Park Lane and Block H in terms of a "sing off". Surely that is the whole point.
I didn't witness anyone getting rubbed up the wrong way or get annoyed by it.
Obviously I couldn't hear individual comments coming from Park Lane, but I think the general consensus from the East Upper that night was positive.
