Following on from an exchange I had a few days ago with Fattynomates Fattynomates and today's posts from our good mafioso friend TonySoprano TonySoprano , I think it's one convo we do need to have. What should Spurs' true ambition be all things considered?

Let's factor in:

- Our past & recent history...only 2 league titles in 140+ years, a few PL podiums & several cup finals since, no trophies for 17 years til this season's Europa League
- Our financial resources...9th richest club in the world, most expensive ST, highest paid chairman, lots of PSR wiggle room, 300ish mil owed to other clubs in transfer fees, our glorious 40% wage-to-turnover ratio etc
- Our infrastructure...world's best stadium, 7-star training complex, London living, Vinnie & Don Fabio (re) joining
- Our manager...Ange gone, Frank likely to be signed real soon
- Our squad...current state (see Spursidol Spursidol & Football Chap Football Chap 's always brilliant breakdowns) and how it should reasonably look come Sept 1st
- Our rivals...where they're at and will be based on past few years' trajectory
- Other internal & external elements you may think of (please share deets)
Like I said to Fatty, in my humble opinion we should be a club that wins the league once (or twice at a push) a decade, 2 or even 3 domestic cups over the same 10-year period, with the odd European trophy - especially EL - here & there (look how often Sevilla have won it...and we're much bigger than they are). I think I'm being rather realistic, but appreciate some of youse will think I'm crazy...or not ambitious enough.

Keen to hear your thoughts, gals & chaps!

A Premier League and 2-3 other trophies every decade please.

Wishful thinking.
Yeah I'm probably a tad mad wishing for 3 or 4 trophies per 10yr stretch. We have the money & setup but history sure ain't in our favour.

But two trophies in 24 years is nowhere near good enough for a club of our standing. As unacceptable as 22 PL defeats in one season.

To be honest, gimme 2 FA Cups a decade and I'd be buzzing already...especially if we have solid PL finishes and 2 or 3 decent European runs to go with it.

were you drunk when you posted this?
the only teams capable of this are ones with massive financial input

Or don't have a chairman/CEO/head honcho who's name rhymes with bevvy

TBH I think we would have almost certainly seen at least 1 PL title and maybe 3 other cups under ENIC so far if it wasn't for the way the league has been bought over that time. Under the same economy and environment Levy came in to (circa 2001), if you look at how we've done, where our spending has been since the new stadium, who we've lost out to in finals and semis - we probably would have been quite dominant.
"If my grandfather had wheels" etc I know, but still.

I don't know how possible it would be to nick a league title with the 6 or 7 clubs now trying to buy one, but we should have done a lot better in the cups. I think most of that is down to Poch's pessimistic view of winning at that time, plus a bit of hard luck.

Should really be looking at another European trophy. If we end up in the conference league again we should take it seriously to try and add some concept of regularity to winning anything. I think that ghost has held us back

TLDR

Ambition must be to compete at the top end of the table and win the occasional cup. Not once every 17 years and never at the expense of league form.
40k fans pay 4 figure sums to watch league games.
The clubs revenue for finishing top 5 rather than bottom 5 is huge, forgetting even the benefit of being in the CL.

Ambition is growing on that too. We have had a lot of CL football in the last 10 years. We need to keep reinvesting that money now covid is over and we need to use it to attract the talent.

We did not sack a coach because he won a cup. This is a mental take on the situation.

Premier League Title & CL - we need to be aiming to win the league within the next 3 years & CL within 5- that should be the aim of the club, I liked the fact that Ange didn't shy away from winning something in his second season and as a big Rich Club I'd like to see us nail our balls to the mast and say we have a plan and that Plan is to become PL champions and to win the CL.

I think as a club these days its hard when you have the likes of City who can just flaunt all the FFP rules designed to make things fairer, however I have never felt the message from the board was "we want to win" lets change that and tell players we are going for Gold, come to Spurs if you want to win it all -
Sure some people may laugh, but they laughed at Ange as well!

We have all had a taste of success now which should make us crave more, the game is about Glory and I want to see us win the league & Champions league.

Absolutely that should be the ambition. Look at Atletico Madrid, Leverkusen and even Napoli these last ten years.. They haven't gone oh there's peak Barcelona and Real Madrid/Bayern/Juventus to deal with, it'll be very difficult.. They've said "give me that title, I'm having that". Even if we have to do it in a different way...

Doesn't mean that we are going to do it.. But that should be the mindset.

The ambition is always to win the league. If we keep ourselves in a position to make a run at the league title year in and year out, then other silverware will come on its own.

Being satisfied with a second rate honor every so many years is a third rate club mentality, this is a huge club on the world scene and should be in competition for the league all the time.

ENICs nain ambition has been to part the fans as much of their money as is possible.

And they are bloody good at it.

Recently their ambitions have stretched doing the same to NFL fans, F1 fans and music lovers. Bloody good at that too.

Put the same focus on winning some trophies and we will win the treble.

That's not quite true, it's the reason every sacked manager gets a payoff regardless of performance.
Every manager is different I know, but they would look at the club and deduce what time span they would need to succeed. If give them 12 months they will laugh at you and yet how many managers have we had in 6 years?
