We've been in the CL or Europe almost every season. We dont need any 'angeball' just to get in europe. We havent won a trophy in 15 years. So winning a league cup has more value to most fans.
It's also a barometer of success. There are only realistically two competitions that we might win. Now we only have one. And for all his talk in the media, he's done exactly the same thing that his predecessors have.

It's used as a whipping tool by opposition fans and the media. And whether he meant it or not, his choices led to the game essentially being thrown last night.

Definitely would put a lot more emphasis on it for certain teams. As of now, you get £100,00 for winning the final of the EFL. That should put into perspective what it really means.

Let’s say FA cup wins you CL football and League cup gets Europa League. Obviously if you win the league the runner up gets the prize that would add some spice.

It is. I know he's got a bigger choice of better players at Spurs and he may have wanted to see if he could rely on any fringe players before the window closes.

But 9 changes with a team getting used to a new manager and new style of play is just baffling.

Interesting.

It may be out of character for Ange, but it’s certainly not out of character for this club, which is why I’m really reluctant to blame Ange

I want to win the league cup, but the truth is that teams don't care about it. They rotate all the time in these games.
Teams at the very top who have their eyes set on winning the league, they will rotate. Teams that win cups all the time can rotate. Teams that want to survive the PL and not get relegated, they will rotate.

A club like ours that isnt going to win the league, isnt getting relegated, and almost never wins a cup, for us the cups are far more important and rotating 9 players would be brainless.

We all understand the financial mechanics. But ask a fan whether they would rather have more financial reward for other aspects or the league cup, I think most would say the cup.

We need more money to compete. We need CL to attact players (or some bollocks, United, Woolwich, Liverpool and Chelsea all seem to manage when not on it) but the game is about glory or something and we want to win cups.

No, but he will have learned that this group of players TOGETHER cannot be trusted to perform when he needs them. Individually they can probably pass the visual test when surround by better players.

The problem is, we all knew because we've seen it before from most of this lot.
This is probably true. No doubt the PL is a more difficult environment with more balls in the air at the same time than the Scottish League. To his credit, Ange has been open that he has things to learn, although not so open about that in the presser after the game.

Would you consider say a big cash prize or maybe European qualification as the prize for the domestic cups as a way to make clubs care?
European qualification is a prize for domestic cups already. If you win the league cup you get conference and the FA cup gets you Europa.

Unless thats changed, but even if it has clubs weren't taking it seriously when that was in place anyway.

The money you get for winning the domestic cups is a joke, something like 100k. Obviously money is a motivator but I have no idea how much you would have to offer to make them care. There's just so much money now and I don't think it makes sense for the FA to dish out ridiculous sums of money for a competition that might not even be enough to motivate clubs.

Ange picks the team. Even if he was trying to see which of the fringe players could make the step up, how can he judge that with 9 changes.

Make 3 or 4, get the game won and then make more changes with subs.

The only thing that expains it for me, is he is showing Levy the lack of depth in the squad.

I’m thinking more about the players themselves rather than Levy.

They never seem up for these games for some reason.

Maybe it’s because they resent being ‘back up’ players? Or maybe they think they’re bigger than the opposition, bigger than the competition, I don’t know

Don't doubt he wants to win it. But he's obviously willing to take risks in games that mean less to the club. I'm sure he felt the team he could put out had the ability to win, and we could have on pens.
I struggle to think they've taken the game all that seriously with playing a B-team against PL opponents.
I also don't see why we can't play 2 games per week, like we would do if we were in the CL using the best team that we can play.

There's more chance of us getting into a CL position this season IMO if we build on our momentum.

Just a thought and it might be bollocks . I doubt whether Ange has earned that much money and he is pushing 60. I can imagine his bonus incentives being stacked on qualifying for Europe and very heavily stacked on CL qualification. I can’t imagine Levy offering much to win the League Cup.
If in everyone’s job they were offered a tenner to wash up ,or 5 grand to sweep up I know what everyone would prioritise.

Still love the way he has us playing , well the first team at least. Not a criticism of Ange much better than the last 3 managers in my view

When I say other teams, I don't even mean top 6 teams. Most teams just don't care about cup competitions anymore.

Aston Villa, who you would expect to care about winning a cup, put out a weakened team in the FA cup last season and lost to fucking Stevenage.

It's not about saying "See, they did it too". It's to point out that teams in general don't care and that includes us.

When you say 'don't care' that's an extreme, I believe that a lot of teams' priority is the league because that's where the money is but to say they 'don't care' is wrong.

I don't believe that we should be taking that stance and I don't believe that it should be used as an excuse for last night especially in the context of our schedule.

I can certainly see that argument about momentum.

But we do tend to see CL hangover with results across most teams so you can understand a weakened team also.
