Erm I thought Bissouma would be a much better signing. I thought Vicario would be worse than he has been. I genuinely did believe in Conte after the first season and only turned a bit later.

I thought we’d be lower down the table this season too. Thought Pochettino’s Chelsea would 100% be above us, though I do think there are signs of their project catching fire.

That’s off the top of my head.

Fair play mate.

Seems both of us pretty capable of knowing fuck all about football then

Not sure I believe Neville knows what makes a good manager tbh, he was a shit manager himself and he may not have wanted Conte at United because of how explosive and short term he is but Conte is a win now manager, that comes with the territory, he's never been a long term appointment for any club tbh.

He wouldn't be saying United should be happy finishing 5th that's for sure. Whilst he isn't wrong in some of the stuff he is saying, I know that when he truly sees someone as a threat to his precious United, he is busy trying to sell them off to other clubs.

You can't take what Neville says seriously. He was Ten Hag in for absolutely ages despite it being clear many months ago that he was a lame duck manager so if he's like that about his own club, he can't be relied upon to comment on Spurs. Neville may be a good pundit but he has shown time and again his opinion on managers can get in the bin, he always advocates to give managers much more time than they deserve.

Yeah I expect you are right. I wouldnt trust the snake.

There's one basic difference.

Both Woolwich and Liverpool went out and bought the very best players in the world for their key positions.

We won't.
Who did Woolwich buy for Arteta that were the best players in the world for their position?

To expand further, except for Rice, who have they signed that, before they signed, you’d have wanted here? No revisionism on the likes of Odegaard or Gabriel, who were massive gambles at the time who have since worked out.

Rice.

The player they needed at that time. They spent a £100 million after getting that close.

We would never do that. It’s not even in the realms of possibility. We’re not going to go out and buy, for example, Kvara.

My point is that the comparison is disingenuous. Ange isn’t going to get the same players.

I can guarantee you if we ditched ange, after the next manager nosedived under Baldcunt, most of the fans who are barking for him to go would cry about how we should have just kept him and rode the tricky patch, because at least we had attacking football.

G-U-A-R-A-N-T-E-E-D.

Not sure Rice is the best in the world at his position. Although he is a very good player and has improved them.

As I asked though, except Rice, have they bought anyone else you’d have wanted? I’ve looked at their signings and whilst some have worked out well, I’d wasn’t bothered about any of their other players not coming here instead.

What they did was hire a manager, unproven at the top level, who kept banging on about “following the project” and they gave him time to do just that. They signed players that most other clubs wouldn’t have been that bothered about. For fees ranging from several million to 50 million. Just like we are doing. We should show similar patience to our project.

No, sure. He’s not the best in the world. But he was what the Scum needed and they invested an absurd amount of money in him. And that investment was off the back of finishing second. And Havertz too, for what, 65 million?

I just fundamentally do not think we will ever do that. We tried it once and ended up with the useless dosser Tanguy. We’re now back to investing in younger players and seeing what happens.

We’re never going to be that type of club.

Which is why we will always fall slightly short.

He was what they needed, yes. Havertz doesn’t belong in the conversation, unless the conversation is about who they massively overpaid for.

But even if Rice is that player, by your own admission, he’s not the best in the world. My initial response was regarding you saying “Both Woolwich and Liverpool went out and bought the very best players in the world for their key positions”. They didn’t. Even Liverpool’s best recent signings, Alisson and VVD, this place would have been on fire if we’d signed a goalkeeper with one decent top level season for £70m and a centre half with two seasons at Southampton, having previously played in shitty wee Scotland, for even more money.

World class / best in the world signings rarely happen and agreed, it’s a table we don’t eat at. But to say we can’t, don’t or won’t compete at the level Woolwich and Liverpool do isn’t true. Some players will join them, some will join us, but we are all aiming at the same level of player, with the very, very rare exception.
