Until he sorts out us actually defending the fucking huge open spaces in front of and behind our fullbacks nothing will change. Frustratingly it looks like he’s doing nothing about it based on the preseason games so far. So e pacer us to continue to concede lots of sloppy goals that begin there. Players will continue to get blamed but it’s the system and tactics that are responsible for it.
Mate, we play high risk football.

He’s going to try and improve us when it comes to taking the risks executing those risks. He’s not going to change to make us take less risks

so - you'd like a return to the Conte/Mourinho 5-4-1 style of football?

Completely agree. He has said that is what has got him to where he is, so he sees no need to change.

That self belief-but lets be honest here, its arrogance- blinds him to the fact that its worked in leagues where the opposition fail to finish the numerous chance his style offers up to them.

Even Scotland against lower teams who couldn't finish, he could have easily been 3 or 4 down in many games.

This is why his Celtic were smashed in Europe by the likes of Dynamo Kiev, Leverkusen and Bodo Glimt, (and Real Madrid) despite dominating possession, and creating numerous chances themselves to win. Yet they didn't.

Where'd I say that?

I think he will have to change it this season or else he wont be in a job with us in 12 months time. It is such an obvious tactical flaw. First half of last season I was actually perplexed as to why teams didnt punish us more in those areas. Especially on the right where Johnson never tracked back to help out Porro.

Part of the problem is that is this is the way he gets the players to buy in: "This is how we play no matter who, no matter where." If he then goes back on that he believes he will lose the players. I actually don't think he would, I think they would welcome a manager that adapts wisely to the task.

Player confidence and belief thrives on winning. I don't think they give a rats if its 433, 442 or inverted full backs or false nines. They just want to win.

He doesn't need to compromise his football principles, you can still focus on playing forward and dominating the game in the opponent's half. You just have to implement a more sensible defensive system to go with it.

Ange will not survive long if he continues with a defensive strategy of 2 CBs standing on the halfway line while everyone else pushes up to the edge of the box. Even teams like City and Woolwich make sure their CDM or one of their FBs is ready to drop into a back 3 to make sure they can't be overrun as soon as they lose the ball.

Any successful team has to be able to keep clean sheets, has to be able to restrict the opponent. Last season we totally failed to do that, if Ange has any sense he will know that has to be corrected if he is going to survive.

I think players are smart enough to know that totally chaotic football doesn't win you anything. They will want to attack and win games but also defend well and keep clean sheets. Nobody likes conceding goals and if you get a reputation for being wide-open, nobody will be afraid to play you. It's very important to be hard to score against.

People are tired of hearing about reports to Gallagher but this is why Ange wants him so badly. He's a pressing machine who would be able to cover those spaces.

There's nothing new under the sun. It's just down to overloading the attacking third and selling out the defense. Teams that do that are entertaining but they have a difficult time being consistent.

Unless they are good enough at picking their moments and have the personnel with the physical ability to recover in time and win the 1v1.

Every system has risks. We know that only too well from Conte that you can play more conservative and supposedly less risky football then concede goals because your defenders have been concentrating all game and switch off.

As long as fans understand what it is the manager is trying to achieve they can surely get behind it?

Ange losing his shit about press energy and issues… in preseason, in Korean summer

I understand it and I think you have to give Postecoglou time to make his system work. He's a good transitional manager until we get through the rebuild and fans find his possession based football and personality entertaining.

People genuinely think someone who can hold onto the ball in the final 3rd will fix this.
How does it stop keepers just hoofing it long bypassing everyone?
How does it stop any of the other outfield players giving the ball away when our entire team is on the opposite half?

The tactic is stupid quite frankly and needs winding back from 11 to about 3 or 4 in most games.
