all systems work if you have the right players for it. this system would be fine if the front 3 were actual good footballers. the balance is off because the front end cant do their part.
You could have the worlds best ball hogs up front, but if the opposition just resort to long balls and sprinters, we're wide open.
Wolves, Fulham, Newcastle, Chelsea (vs 9 admittedly) and plenty of others exploited it mercilessly. You can't play with every man in the opposition half all the time and just rely on VDV to catch anyone that tries to break through. Without his pace, we'd have lost a lot more games last season.

Also Vicario was outstanding the first few games of the season.

I've already said on reflection it was a great season, as nobody expected 5th after losing Kane. And I'm very much hoping Ange has a great season.

But the outcome in a singular match with extreme circumstances does not justify the performances in the majority of 27 matches that came after.

Losing 5/6 games is not "unfortunate". Losing 12 games across a season is not unfortunate. In many games (not counting Chelsea) we were blown away by teams, and in multiple games we conceded first. All with the same end result - chasing the game. It wasn't admirable then, it was tactically naive when it was always the same sort of goal we conceded. You said to me just yesterday sometimes you need to grind out results, yet this isn't in Ange's managerial DNA, so it's likely to be a recurring theme.

But I'm bored of saying the same thing repeatedly. New season. Come on you spurs. Let's hope for better this year.

Not true, I predicted fifth.

I think there will be more of this from what I have seen in preseason as we havent changed tactics at all.

I think we are in for a shock this season personally. We havent improved the squad or starting eleven at all really. The Werner loan set the tone for the window and set us up for the disappointment we are currently seeing in not bringing any players in the manager wants so far (in attack).

Totally agree. I think we could have some real issues. To be anywhere near successful Ange needed 3 or 4 quality players to improve the 11. As it stands we'll be lucky to add 1 of those. Add in his stubborness tactically and with set pieces then i'm not sure it bodes well. I think we'll be fortunate to match last seasons 5th unless something dramatic happens in the next 2 weeks player wise.

I don't think he will last the season personally.

Sure, we need quality players and they would make a difference and improve us but I think the system itself is flawed, far too naive for the PL imo.
Flawed but finished 5th??? That’s not flawed mate, that’s not having the right players. Our front players are the biggest problem we have because they can’t keep the ball. They are the reason we get countered as much. Fix that then the so called flaws minimise. And to be fair teams that caught us at home last season we generally recovered and beat them. Forest,Palace,Brentford,Sheff Utd Luton and Brighton. Even add Liverpool into that.

Pep grinds out wins.

Every single premier league champion grinds out wins.

If you are expecting swashbuckling wins with incredible free flowing football every week in the premier league you’ve lost all connection with reality and you’ll be disappointed no matter what manager we have and what players we sign
We were one of the best at grinding out wins last season especially at home when we went behind. That shows we have a bit about ourselves. Too many on here think you win every game, play great and every player plays out of their skins. Delusional. There’s so much improvement needed but we are still in a good place especially if we can get a couple of forwards in.

It's definitely the system. We just don't look like a team that is on the verge of doing something great, we don't look solid. We just look so open and lacking control.

I can't get away from the worry that Ange is totally out of his depth, time will tell.
No-one's called this out for trolling yet?

FMD...

Probably wants Mourinho back.

If we had good attackers we would have raced into a 3-0 lead in most games like the Goons did when they flew out the blocks and then the games done. We dominated, didn’t score (or just scored once) and punched ourselves out and then went to shit

yep, if youre going to over commit to going forward you need the quality in the final 3rd to make it work, otherwise you're going to get punished.

I strongly believe it. I have faith in Ange but he needs to be backed, but if we don’t sign two front players then agree his system needs to adapt and he has to create a more defensive foundation

I don’t think he will be backed, and I don’t think he will change his system and I think he’ll be gone by Nov. Hopefully I am wrong on the first guess and Solanke/Gyokeres and Neto/Eze come this week and his strategy yields beatings galore

He changed against City and we looked much better even though we lost, should have won really, he'll probably change things around again in some games this season.
