Worth pointing out with Eddie Howe last season that they had CL for the first time in years with a squad lacking quality against our no European football. One of the reasons Brighton struggled as well. A smallish squad lacking quality, loads of injuries and European football dont mix well as i suspect we're about to find out.
Newcastle also lost Tonali for the season.
And they also lost about 5 other key players for much longer than we lost anyone.
So did Chelsea.
So did United.

We did have a crisis, but it wasn't as bad as them.

Reading this thread is giving me a headache. Our results are shit and have been for pretty much all of '24, defend Ange all you want but we MUST start seeing an improvement and soon or he will be sacked.

As simple as that and completely agree.

Our forwards would all look better and score more goals if they ever had the opportunity to play in space.
But we have a fetish for waiting for the opposition to get back in shape and pack the box before we try to score, so they don't.

This is the same method as Pep. Difference is Pep has more technical forwards who operate well in tight space.

If you dont have the players for the system it might be worth changing the system to suit the players you do have. We have 2 goalscoring inside forwards in Son and Johnson we dont have wingers, 2 potentially good attacking fullbacks, a decent no 10 who currently has no space to operate in. Seems odd just carrying on doing the same thing.

True but then why do we hire someone if we don’t have the players for the system/way of playing. This is now Conte, Jose, Ange in a row where we have the same debate, why doesn’t he change the system. Why don’t we hire managers we either provide them or managers who fit the players on our books.

Yep. Levy and our football operation are all over the shop and its not a new thing. Really hitting home now how bad the summer window was. Still think all the time Levy is here we need a pragmatist because a systems manager will never get what he needs in numbers or quality.

Jose was a pragmatist, no? Nuno is probably the definition of a pragmatist.

What other type of pragmatist are we talking about here?

What even is a pragmatist?

Whilst we are at it, what is reality?

They aren’t pramatists. That is a total mis use of the word and it annoys me big time. Jose and Nuno are fixed low block managers. An actual pragmatist is someone like Redknapp or Jol who while have some attacking instincts bend the system and players depending on the opposition.

Not sure why pragmatist has suddenly become a term for very ideological low block managers, almost the opposite of the word.

Eddie Howe is an example of a modern pragmatist.

I would say international managers are pragmatists as the player pool is limited to the nation they manage. So .....Southgate it is then.

Bending the system and players depending on the opposition is the perfect description of Jose.

You are basically describing the Portuguese mentality to football. If they have less talent then they bend the system to be more counter attacking. Italians as well like Ancelloti, he's 100% a pragmatist.

Not with us. There was multiple times we played significantly weaker opposition and he played sit deep and counter, that is not pragmatism. What he was at Porto is not the manager he is now.

Redknapp by contrast would play full on attack when he knew we could overwhelm the opposition, he would play low block if we played decent sides.

Ancelotti yes I would say he is pragmatic.

Totally agree. It probably helps Carlo has some of the best players in the world 😃

Redknapp used to tell players to go out and run about a bit. Probably by his own admission, he was a man manager much more than a tactician. His best skill is understanding what players are good at and how they might combine with others. Elite at picking a team. Never one for adjusting the system. Generally speaking it was 4-4-2 every game.
