Manager Antonio Conte

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Lionel Messi and Pep Guardiola, having watched multiple River Plate matches and Guardiola in particular having scouted them thoroughly to acquire Julian Alvarez...

''Gallardo is one of the best managers on the planet''.

Random posters on a Spurs forum having never heard of him until a week ago and never seen a River Plate match...

''He's not good enough.''

Most people on this site have a better understanding of tactics than I do, but it seems to me that Conte makes a mistake in letting attack minded teams like Woolwich just have possession. I'm still glad we have him and don't want him gone, but Saturday was extremely frustrating to watch. I had hoped he'd make a formation change at half time and put Bissouma in the middle again. He seems pretty stubborn sometimes, but that doesnt make him any different than most managers.

Woolwich were still going to have possession regardless if we switched to a 3 because that's how they want to play, Conte's tactic is to counter those teams who hog the ball - nothing wrong with that (as it worked at Anfield and Etihad last season) it's the execution which is the problem as on Saturday our final pass was poor and even for our pen Son should have played Rich in for an easy 1 on 1 with the keeper.

The goals we conceded by the way was down to a worldy which I guess is fair enough - the tactic allows players to shoot from outside the box so at some point you're gonna concede from a long range goal, the 2nd was our keeper throwing the ball into the net and the 3rd was cause we were down to 10 so space opened up in midfield.

The frustrating thing is picking Emerson, because we know when Emerson plays bad things happen.

Ooh I don’t know. Only 30 league games left you know… in fairness, I am getting a bit twitchy at how we start slowly and seem to rely on ceding possession and defending. However, on Saturday it was 2 individual mistakes that ended the game as a competitive fixture. We were well in it at half time and were looking the better team
Two in midfield against lesser opposition, three in midfield against stronger teams. That would be my ideal system. Less defensive duties on Höjbjerg and Bentancur.

Sess/Royal for games with more defending to do, Perisic/Doherty for the attacking ones.

In midfield, there are enough options. Maybe a more creative one in January, although Conte doesnt seem to favour them.

Son for games in which its expected that we have less of the ball. Kulu for the games with more possession. Richy for everything in between or to break a deadlock.

Look Conte is an elite manager but if you want him to get him playing like his Juventus, Inter or even Chelsea teams you need to get him the full squad to do it.

Most important we need 3 ball playing CB’s, an elite RWB or a RWB he trusts and can attack and probably someone like Brozovic. We ain’t there yet, the team is incomplete.

The question then is, will Conte stay and will we back him enough to complete the squad.

The other problem is let’s say Conte leaves, who do we get. The obvious replacements Ten Hag and Potter are no longer available. I love attacking football but we would need to buy and sell to refit the squad for a new manager with a different philosophy.

Now that we are on a path with Conte we need to see it through and properly back him, the alternative seems worse to me. I don’t disagree that Conte might have got some things wrong but he is still an elite manager in his prime, that is not easy to replace.

I get the logic but I think you have it the other way round, 2 in midfield against teams who want to keep the ball and play high up so you essentially 'give up' midfield and you have an out-ball on the wings.

3 in midfield when you want a bit more control against teams where we need to press a bit more.

i mean he's always kinda been like this as many have observed. Last season with Kane sulking for most of it he became the main man and seemed to relish in that role and fulfill also with his best ever goal return

Now so far he is back to what we usually get since he's been here, an average of 14 league goals. incredible Hot streaks and periods of not looking very good.
Still just based on reputation alone even when he is poor, he scares the living daylights out of the opposition and does free up spaces for other forwards when we break

We should have played him up front on the shoulder of their last defender which would have given us more of an outlet

Kane taking a free kick on the half way line in the 1st half was ridiculous similar to him taking corners for England against Iceland in the WC!

Pochettino will eventually be back at Spurs 100%. Conte for few years, then I think Pochettino finishing what he tried to achieve.

He's using bad his squad and his tactics aren't working well. Let's be honest, we managed good results only agains shit teams, lost to Woolwich and draws with West Ham and Chelsea, both weren't that great when we faced them. We said a lot that Woolwich got some results cause they faced bad team and that's most the case with us, we aind't doing that well, Conte needs to show more of what he's capable of.

It's good against anyone, as it's meant to open up space in behind the opposition by drawing them forward. Against teams who are not particularly used to "dominating" possession, it is particularly effective, as they're not really structurally set up to dominate per se so, in theory at least, it should result in them being out of position more often when the counter happens.
I appreciate your post but disagree on the counter's suitability for us- in my opinion it relies too much on the opponent making mistakes. I prefer strategies where we play positive, proactive football. It feels like we can have more potential control of the outcome that way.

Totally agree he needs to stay, the players purchased have been done so with the style of football we play, even if it isn't great or not working like we are currently experiencing.
But it doesn't matter who is in charge, the manager will achieve next to nothing, other than occasional top four or a semi final appearance.

I fear your right unless we go out and get a few truly elite players like Skrinair, Hakimi, Brozovic etc that are world class and fit Conte, even then you are dealing with Man City and Foden, De Bruyne and the big Orc.

1st defeat all season. Let's see where we are in may. Conte is instilling tougher mentality imo but were light in midfield. Not keen on fact knowing every game we go out absorbing pressure. Bissouma needs to play. Maddison is a must purchase in january or next summer.
