Manager Antonio Conte

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Hello everyone, haven't posted for a long while but thought I would chip in here: not sure where else to put it given it's mostly about AC.

My thoughts on Conte and Spurs so far this season. Having renewed my ST I’ve attended six games and watched a bunch on TV. My thoughts are that we are doing well in the league, position-wise, though this somewhat belies performances. We have rarely had a good 90 minutes and usually only play in the second half. We’ve also thrown in some crap results and performances and there are a few fan grumblings, as the style of play is quite negative, and you notice quickly when ‘Conte-ball’ isn’t delivering wins regularly. In short, I think the problems are threefold:
  • Conte is a good manager overall but too stubborn. He needs to ditch 3-5-2 as we don’t have the players for it. We have two full backs who offer very little in attack – obvious, but we should just build the team around the best players. Bentancur and PEH have been great this season and Bissouma is looking useful when he comes on, most of the time. I would adopt a three-man midfield and go 4-3-3 or mix it up a little with 4-2-3-1 adding in another wide attacker, potentially.
  • Players. We have a number who are past it/not good enough. Apart from Romero – who wants to play for Argentina more than he does Spurs – the entire back line could be replaced potentially. A new CB to partner Romero and two better FBs are a must. Hugo has also been a great servant, but his errors are starting to cost us points and we need to get in a new ‘keeper.
  • Board. Levy needs to stop meddling and penny pinching but also when we do spend use this money wisely. Our expensive buys have generally ranged from ‘flattered to deceive’ to ‘useless’.
Positively we do win a lot of games late on which shows me the spirit is good and the players are for the manager. I think our team’s mentality is OK but too much around the club is a bad fit with other parts. I’ve been wrong before about manager ins and outs, but I think Conte won’t be here in 12-18 months’ time and we’ll be on a new ‘project’ manager by then. an enduring mystery to me is despite our incredible facilities and much-vaunted academy we rarely seem to produce truly top young players. I’d be interested in any thoughts on that – too much too young, maybe?

Have a good Christmas all and see you on boxing day.

The problem isn't Conte, it's two things.

1. Wing-backs; We all know how reliant his system is on decent wing-backs and the truth is ours are bang average on one side and poor on the other. RWB is an absolute priority for January. Imagine if we had one who could cross how much more dangerous we'd have been this season with all the good positions Royal has wasted.

2. Average Purple Patch Players; We still have players at the Club like Dier, Davies, Sessegnon, Sanchez, Doherty and Lucas. None of these players offer any consistency. The only thing that consistently happens with these lot is that we call them shit, they suddenly turn up for a few games and hit some form and we forgive everything hoping they have turned a corner, then they revert to type and being bang average. These players have all had many many years at the Club and none of them have found regular consistency over a season.

It's not as easy as replacing them all in one or two windows, we've already started the process with Winks, Ndombele, Lo Celso, Aurier, Bergwijn, Reguilon & Rodon leaving. Give him another couple of windows and I'm sure we'll see the rest of the under-performing players moved on.

"If you want to win things the quality of the players is really important" ... he understands perfectly. Give the man the tools he needs.

Absolutely.

Said it before, the players who keep letting us down are the ones who let our previous managers down. It's not a coincidence. Conte can only do so much. And what he's done with this group fantastic. The stats are there.

Back him in January and if he's still here in the summer. Back him big time in the summer. No excuses.

Stop playing Emerson Royal, just stop doing it

Other than that you're doing a fine job Antonio, fuck the haters.

It's a mix imho. Conte is clinging to a system where our worst players see an awful lot of the ball. Clearly the likes of Emerson aren't good enough but it's on him that he is sticking with it.

We saw in January last year, you get him the players he requires he can really put a winning team together.

He's also shown he has changed quite a bit of mentality inside the club - no more exhibited than the countless heart stopping last 10minute +extra time winners.

He has his flaws (rotation, selection) most can be blamed on him but a portion can be blamed on what he has at his disposal.

As a fan, and how I 'feel', I want him at this club and I want he, himself, to be at this club. It would be interesting to see, hypothetically, if he stayed until the summer of 2025 how much of a jump we'd have made as a serious contending, and hopefully, winning club. He's the right man to try to achieve that...he's just got to be taken seriously by the board.

I can't see the last but happening, though there are signs of life in that regard.

Exactly.

Levy HAS to back Conte in the next two windows. It’s that simple.

Let’s not pretend the money isn’t there, because it is.

Now it’s all about bringing in a few QUALITY players in the right areas.

Our board's record of supporting managers isn't great and AC is a drama queen so can't see him here in a year's time. I hope I'm wrong as I think he could achieve something if backed properly. Just want to see a bit more flexibility from him and be open to changing things up if they aren't working properly.

he wont see out the season if he doesnt sort that backline out in jan. its actually embarrassing for the club to be going into games with a back 3 that poor. youd understand if we had really bad luck with injuries but we dont, thats the best we can muster up bar romero.

Conte undoubtedly needs to be backed but that is not so easy unless you have mountains of corrupt money to spend. So he has to wait until the right players at the right price are available. In the mean time use the players that are available to their best purpose. We have shite defenders but good attackers so it is plain ridiculous to try and play a defensive game! Like a lot of fans I don’t want Conte gone but also we are not wrong to question his methods. By the way, if anyone in this pub says ‘trust the process’ I will take them outside and give them a good kickin.

Why not trust the process though? Just sayin.

I get what you are saying, but it has two issues -
- we do not have CBs to play in CB duo; even Romero style is based on aggressive approach and benefits from having more cover + he is available like 50% of the time; cannot play 2 CB system with 0,5 fitting CBs
- there would be much more potential playing 4-3-3 if we would have actually different kind of CMs. Like if we would have creative CM to use in games against Bournemoth, Fulham and Leeds... but we don't. I am not fully sure how well we'd do with 4-3-3 and CM of PEH-Bissouma-Bentancur or PEH-Skipp-Bentancur in such games where opposition is defending with low block...

So yea, I think in January already we have to get in 1 or 2 CBs. One creative player to use in midfield and potentially a forward player who can score goals. Cause currently we only have 1 of those... which is not nearly good enough.

Antonio Contes first 38 games with Spurs has yielded him his highest points tally of any of the club he has managed to far, Levy/Enic must give him the players he needs and he will deliver trophies.
