Manager Antonio Conte

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

The problem with Poch, Jose and Conte was that they got great results, looked like they would achieve things, but ultimately when they left we were in a desperate run of form.

That's why it's so hard to pin the blame on anyone other than the manager.

How did a team, in Poch's case finish 2nd and make the CL final fade in a few months? How did Jose get a team to the top of the league 20 games in, then fall away thereafter and Conte's team who finish a season on an up and start the next well, then fall away again.

How does a team hit a high and then fall away so quick?

I've been saying since Poch that there's far too many weak minded players who lack the skill and mindset to be up there year in year out.
Some of them can put in sporadic performances over a contained period. But they all revert back to what they really are, which is lazy, tactically inept and generally a liability.

Former Tottenham defender Matt Doherty is hoping 'unbelievable' manager Antonio Conte stays with Spurs 'as long as possible' amid speculation over his future.
The Italian, whose contract is due to expire during the summer, has found himself under the spotlight following a weekend rant during which he accused his players of lacking professionalism and questioned the club's culture over the last two decades.
Conte spoke out after seeing his team squander a 3-1 Premier League lead at Southampton to draw 3-3, prompting suggestions his tenure could be ended prematurely.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg calls on Antonio Conte to 'elaborate' after the Tottenham boss accused his players of lacking professionalism in THAT extraordinary rant... as Spurs weigh up whether to sack the Italian in the international break

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will wait for manager Antonio Conte to 'elaborate' on comments made during his astonishing 10-minute rant following Tottenham's limp draw against Southampton on Saturday before passing judgement.
The Danish player started at St Mary's during Saturday's match, and as such found himself in the firing line as his manager lambasted his players and offered a damning indictment on the club as a whole.
Along with questioning the professionalism of his players, and suggesting they too often received 'excuses' for poor performances, Conte said that 'Tottenham's story' was an unwillingness to 'play under pressure', something that was responsible for their 'twenty years' without a trophy.

‘He has to elaborate’: Højbjerg seeks more clarity from Conte after outburst

Genuinely wish this one would stop fucking talking he's an even bigger politician than Conte. If he played as good a game as he talked it (him and Eric Dier) he be keeping Modric out the Madrid team. God I want them gone!

He's chatted a LOT of bollocks this last couple of weeks.....

Danny Kelly just made a strong observation on TS.... He said that Conte has tried to throw the players under the bus whilst simultaneously trying to "exploit the cracks between the fanbase and the owners", to shield himself from any blame, but it has back-fired....... Very few have bought it even if they see an element of truth to some of his words.
Yes exactly that is what conte wants to do. Divide and conquer. It’s so obvious what his playing at. The other week it was the fabs, previously digs at the club , AC Milan history implying we are nothing compared to them and this the owners. It’s anyone who manages to catch his eye that week will be in the firing line. I reckon he looks a bit thick but is actually very calculated.

Putting Levy aside - we all know his failings and how culpable he is and I am sure there is a thread on him somewhere on here ...

Conte has massively, massively underperformed this season. Turgid football. Bad squad management. Refused to drop Son for months - and must take some responsibility for playing Son as a 'Conte #10' aka inside forward with back to goal. Ran Højbjerg into the ground despite Bissouma/Skpp/Sarr. Would not play Spence, persisted for months and months with Royal at WB (ironically when he did finally show some good form he was dropped for the superior technician in Porro). Persisted with the 2 CMs who were outnumbered *every single* game against inferior teams. Persisted with Dier when he clearly is not good enough. And then slagged of the fans and the players when he threw away our trophy chances with weird tactics and team selections in must win games. Looking back, those three games - Forest, Sheff Utd and AC Milan ... total shambles where the blame lies squarely with the manager IMO.

We have the makings of a very decent squad. Lots of young players who can really go up a level with the right coaching and leadership - Romero, Porro, Spence, Udogie, Skipp, Sarr, Bissouma, Bentancur, Kulusevski, Richarlison ... just needs a world class spine - GK, CB, CM, CF. We already have the CF in Kane (but I would not be surprised if he left this summer now). Just needs a decent manager who is prepared to coach the players and play exciting football when the situation dictates (i.e. home games and away games at non-top 4 teams).
Note we didn’t bother the scorers in any of those cup games we lost. Just imagine that 4 games and barely a chance created. He did nothing to change things in any of those games really!
Also v soton they had 29 touches in our box compared 17 we had in theres. That is unforgivable. Just highlights 2 things: 1) we offer no resistance to teams abd just let them play, 2) we cannot build up any sustained attacking play.

He was spot on with his criticism of the owners though.
Pretty much amplifying the words of those who've gone before him without pulling back on his punches.
Long overdue and refreshing to hear. They've had it far too easy for far too long.

Which players can't get a look in that will actually make a difference? The squad is so average, we don't have talented individuals lining up to push the usual suspects selected.
How the fuck would we know if they don’t see the pitch?

Bissouma couldn’t get on the pitch, Richarlison same and that’s nearly £100m FFS

Forget about whatever you perceive my views to be......

Very simply - Conte has taken directs shots at levy and called the board out so why is he still in the job in your opinion?
That’s down to levy & his views. He got Jose to win us a trophy then sacked Him before the final. So he is unpredictable & hard to second guess. None of us have an agreed reason for this that makes a lot of sense.

Of course our managers have failed. That's not what I'm talking about.

Without the aid of Captain Hindsight, it's impossible to suggest that hiring Mourinho and/or Conte was a mistake, or lacked ambition.

There are definitely things I'd love some clarity on (but I'm not holding my breath) that may change some of my opinion on Levy:

1. The sacking (timing of) of Mourinho.
2. Apparent lack of due diligence on Paratici.
3. Explanation of the 18-months (peak stadium build) transfer drought. Was there no money or did Pochettino have unrealistic expectations for the situation?
Well I don’t know what to say as I said Jose would need to be heavily backed which levy doesn’t do so it won’t work out. You say it can only be in hindsight even if people say it before it occurs.
Yes I agree with having clarity on the three things you mentioned. The sacking of Jose is the oddest one to me.

What if....

Conte is trying to get the players to argue amongst themselves to break the Mason's mate's mentality and get people playing like they aren't on a cushty number where they just have to turn up.

Yea levy has picked the managers but a lot here said they wanted conte bcos his a serial winner and will kick arse. I’ve not seen one game this season where we have dominated ftom start to finish and totally imposed our selves on the oppo. We play like pussies on the pitch bcos of his shot tactics. But come press conference his a hard man. Why not show that in the dressing room and then get the team to play with that attitude. Even if the football was short at least ducking g get the team to be hard to beat and concede goals. His done neither!
We are slipping back in to soft Tottenham aren’t we.

Sometimes I think Conte is the only one that actually cares we don't win anything.

What he said on Sunday, was spot on. The players have been to comfortable, for too long. All Conte wants to to do is win, which is exactly what the fan base wants too.

As a Tottenham Hotspur fan, that's the passion I want to see when it comes to winning.

Every year we shit the bed against some low tier club. It's not like were getting kicked out every year by Man utd, City, Liverpool...

The players need to take acountability, but instead, once again, it's the managers fault.

Go figure.
Hold his record in the cups is terrible. Knocked out twice to champo teams one of which made 8 changes. We still had richo, son and Lucas up front. By the end of the game we’re at full strength yet couldn’t muster one decent chance really. His whole setup is wrong. Basically do nothing for 60 mins. However v SU they sussed were no threat and ran a bit faste mr than we did. Yet conte made subs, tactical switches or fire them up from the touch line. How can it be that his been out down twice in a row in the fa cup?

Conte's rant did include some truths. But also glossed over his own faults.

It's Conte's job to manage and improve the players. That includes their egos. It is Conte's job to manage the on field product and improve it if it does not produce results and so on.

I can definitely see future managers wanting to know that they will have the time to implement their system. And know what the future is for Paratici. But there will 100% be managers willing to take the Spurs job. We're a big Premier League side in London ffs.

If those managers are up to the expectations of the fans is a completely different matter. That's going to be the big struggle for any new project manager coming in. There's a section of the fanbase that does not have the patience for such a rebuild.
It’s amazing how kompany has gone to Burnley and changed them to playing a more attacking game virtually right from the off. Many managers can come in and get the team setup to how they want. Conte has had plenty of time to implement even a half decent football style but his failed miserably. Also you need a manager to big up the team, come out say things like “we are gonna give it a go” etc ie be positive. However Conte never talks like that he makes out every team is world beaters and his basically telling our player we are gonna struggle to beat this team. He needed to show more positivity and show more confidence in the team / squad. Yet by his selections and subs you knew he only wanted to play certain individuals. Which I’m then sure the other players would have picked up on.

Suspected him for a while to be one of those players who pretended good but do completely the opposite. I wish he’ll be put back in his place, on the bench where he deserves.

PEH is crap.

I don’t care how much pashun he shows, he’s no more or no less than a 15 million Premier League midfielder should look.
Average, bottom half quality.
