The cartoon Cup has always been a sham. It was created as a second rate sham of a competition. The only time it’s status was slightly elevated was during the euro-ban. Well the euro-ban is over, and that tin pot is back to being a joke. And there you have it when a supporter becomes the stockholder, where revenue becomes preferential to silverware. It’s show just how warped things have become when supporters measure the value of a trophy by the monetary awards attached to them and denigrate the tournaments that have defined this club.
Newsflash, we finished 12 points behind Leciester and came in 3rd, at no point did occupy top spot. We followed that by finishing 2nd and only ‘6’ points behind the winners and again did not occupy the top spot at any point that season. If that makes us ‘challengers’ then we have a very different interpretation of this. And besides why the focus on those seasons what did we challenge for in this one?
As for acquiring the finance to attract the best players. Well firstly I have made no such demands, we don’t have the means to pay the best and the CL doesn’t alter that in anyway. If it did we would have seen a different output in our transfer windows, we would see us paying our best players the market rate. That’s not happening because you are turning the CL into something it is not. You are creating a fantasy out of media generated soundbites designed to sell tv packages.
I would imagine you dont have the slightest clue how much it has generated for us or the slightest at clue as to how the distribution works. If you did then you wouldn’t making such proclamations about such a highly variable unsecured income stream.
The only reason a certain sect of Spurs supporters refuse to admit this is then we’d have to be honest about having won fuck all in 27 years.
Are you seriously of the opinion that winning a second rate competition that barely rates above preseason challenges is more important to the club than qualifying for the elite global competition? You’d be satisfied right now if we’d pushed on in the cartoon Cup, won it, but it caused us to drop 7 points along the way and we finished 5th?
Being in the CL means more in direct revenue dispersal and also increases the value of a number of lucrative sponsorships. Winning the cartoon Cup wouldn’t even pay for the players to participate in the competition. We cannot financially build and maintain a squad that can challenge to win the league by prioritizing the league cup and/or FA Cup over the CL. And I’d trade 10 bullshit league cups no one gives a fuck about for this squad to win the league once in the next 15 years.
I don’t know why I bother even responding to such fucking nonsense. The 80s are over, I know it’s hard for you to get your head around but it’s true. The world has moved on, domestic cups are a fun little side competition...they don’t matter.
