We’ve been top goal scorers the past two seasons with the same players. Now you want to replace them?
Not all of them. A couple could easily be replaced, some could be given more competition for their place, or improve their game by playing alongside better teammates, or get more rest time through squad rotation. It's very naive to think that just because things are going well right this moment that we can't or shouldn't be constantly looking to improve our squad.

Of course we should always be looking to improve - l just disagree with your comment about lacking quality in every position. That’s a bold statement and an incorrect one imo. Centre forward?

I think you are misunderstanding completely, I'm saying that we have quality in some positions but not the same level of quality in every position. You get me?

Ok, I misunderstood, but that’s not what you said originally. Apologies for the confusion.
It is definitely what I meant but I didn't word it right. To be even more clear, I'm saying we should improve the average level of quality of our squad, so that the players are on a more even level to each other; so we have fewer obvious weak links and the manager has more options to work with in terms of starting line-ups and subs.

Lamela coming back is massive, Lucas Moura should add to our depth, Llorente though has been a flop.

We could score more, we could score less. I think you're being a little bit harsh really. I don't think we created that many clear cut chances in the games against Liverpool and Juve and yet we scored twice in each match and away from home at that.

Wrong thread mate. :dierpochhug:

Ive been irked on quite a few occasions this season with the greed of our front line. In particular Sonny. There are numerous games where you can see the non-recipient of a straight forward pass to a clear cut opportunity absolutely blowing a gasket that they didn't have the net bulging. I'd like to say it isn't a criticism, but it is. I've been enjoying our football immensely over the last 18 months. The belligerent mind-set on the pitch has been the most startling improvement, battling back into games is becoming a trait of ours. Yet, we could have had so many more comfortable second halves if we had just pulled one back to (enter name here) when we've got in to the box.

Actually I think the worst offender is Kane rather than Son but still I think people are being overly-critical here.

I'm not being intentionally harsh, even if it sounds like I am. I'm just being objectively critical. I love what we are doing and how we play and all that. But if you detach from it emotionally and really look at what we are working with in the cold light of day, we do have quite an inconsistent squad as you would expect given our budget; although it is, as you say, improving bit by bit. We have some players who are amongst the best in the world, some who are very good on their day but not consistently enough for one reason or another, a few who are just bodies to fill a squad (although one or two were loaned out in this category), and perhaps a couple who are regular starters but in an ideal world would be squad players.

To bring it back to the goal scoring thing: I think even one top signing could significantly boost our goal scoring fortunes. Players improve when the caliber of their teammates improves; for example as good as Kane is now, he could be even better if he had better players to link up with. It's not just about number of shots or chances, it's also about the quality of said chances.

Look at Raheem Sterling as a case study. I don't rate him all that highly to be honest and I don't buy for a second that Genius Pep has suddenly transformed him into a great goal scorer; but the one factor that has definitely changed in his favour this season is the team around him. He is surrounded by top quality players who are creating all kinds of space and high percentage chances in every game, and all he has to do is be quick enough to keep up with play and get into those spaces to tap the ball in from 2 yards again and again. Don't get me wrong that is still very commendable, but I don't think for a second that he could replicate his goal scoring form if you plucked him out of that incredible team and setup and dropped him in elsewhere. Now I'm not saying we can improve our squad by that degree, of course not, but even one major upgrade to our starting eleven could suddenly have a knock-on effect on the rest of the team, inspiring whole new synergy and creativity, which then leads to better chances being created and therefore more goals. But it would have to be the right signing and not another Llorente or Sissoko.

You mentioned signing a top player but also speak of our constricting budget in the same comment... a bit of a catch 22 isn't it? Signing marquis players isn't exactly our MO.

Every squad has holes in it, what ours does so well is mask those holes with the players we have at our disposal.

Thanks for the stats on this Guido. It's clear our midfield haven't scored anywhere near as many as last season - namely Son and Dele who both hit around twenty. Eriksen and Dembele have never been prolific goal scorers either. Also Toby and Vic' being injured has meant we've been less of an aerial threat from set pieces.

I think my question relates more to games against big opposition (I've edited my original post accordingly). Apart from Liverpool at home; I can't think of another big game where we've really punished a team this season. We lost against Chelscum despite our dominance, and never really put the Manure and Arse' games to bed.

Definitely not knocking the lads though - especially Harry. It just concerns me because quality opposition - even lesser teams - can, and will, punish us.

You've answered your own question.
