Ex-Spurs Player Brennan Johnson

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Odd the criticism he gets.

Outside of Bale, Son and Dele he is the highest scoring non centre forward player Spurs have ever had.

Sure, he's not a flashy winger doing step overs and putting crosses into the box, but he is good at ghosting defenders and finding space. He also had very good stats for his defensive contribution.

Do you think Odobert/Tel/Simmons/Kudus will score >15 goals this season?

Do you regard football to be a team event or rather an individual one?

If individual - then I get your comparison and conclusion. INDIVIDUALLY his scoring from outside of ST position is true.
But if you (as I certainly do) regard it as team sport, then it is absolutely opposite of that. Bale, Son and Dele ALL CREATED SIGNIFICANT PART OF THEIR CHANCES. Maybe Alli least from that list, but others most certainly.

All Johnson can do is meet the ball at the back-post. But if we fail to have sharp enough build-up to get the ball there, he is not the one who would take on players and create anything himself. At least for last 1,5 years. He was doing some decent early crossing in early Ange-days, but that was mostly until opposition learned to pack their box better.

Anyway, coming back to original point - Odobert/Tel/Kudus don't need to scored >15 goals individually. Until their contribution to team effort is enough to get THE TEAM higher in the table. With Johnson you saw overall result. 18 goals scored with the season and position in the table being 17th. I'd be quite happy if Odobert/Tel/Kudus to score all less than 15 and us being 3rd for example. Xavi can hit 15+ goals in full season, yea, I do believe that.

Frank has got Johnson’s number, Frank absolutely hates lazy players

A move back to Forest isn’t such a bad idea? Ange obviously loves him at the back stick to prod in those Ange goals - and Johnson is very good at that tbf.

We are only a few games into the season. Frank has prioritised defensive shape and midfield discipline over attack thus far.

With Richarlison being the only fit striker, it was always going to be preferred to have wingers who can provide service to get the best out of him - thus Kudus and Odobert have got to nod.

Solanke is less of a target man, and does a lot of work off the ball. This is where a player like Johnson thrives, finding those spaces left by defenders.

Johnson will still score important goals for the team this season, and that's why it's a squad - not just 11 players. Nobody is there just to make up the numbers.

I would not get rid of BJ - Kudus and Simons will pick up injuries at some point and Brennan is the only back up I would be confident of scoring.

I get the talk of his technical ineptitude, but he is very very good at the hardest thing in football - sticking the ball in the back of the net.

I fully expect him to start and score in Wednesday night

C'mon. The finish of most of his goals is very skilful, and as good as most top centre forwards. His movement in and around the box is very good, and he has lighting quick reactions. Sure, he scored 4 tap ins at the back post - but if that was so easy, why isn't Kudus or Odobert scoring tap ins at the back post every week?

I think he's a good 2nd striker option. But not as useful if you intend to play long balls and set pieces (as Spurs have thus far). If we start playing quicker more direct football again, he will play more often than not.

He would absolutely command a good fee - young international and good goal record. We should replace him at the earliest opportunity imho. I would rather stick Tel out there and let him get some time to develop than BJ. Tragic player who should not be playing for Tottenham.

You did not get the POINT of my post at all, did you?

I never questioned his finishing ability nor positioning. I said that in order to score those, someone else has to do all the work for him to receive the ball in this position. He is 100% reliant on his teammates on winning the ball, retaining the ball and delivering the ball to exactly right position for him to make such a finish.

And this is exactly why he will have to wait games like Doncaster to play - we are just not as dominant to be able to do all the hard work with 9 field player for him to receive the ball in good position. Once Kolo Muani is up to speed, Solanke is fit and Kulusevski returns, he will mostly not even be last 10 minutes player. He will be down to unused sub in most games.

Just to be clear - I do not hate him. I just think that he is overall too limited player. We need more input to ball carrying, pressing, dribbling and precise passing from our attacking players to control games. I think there will be some minutes over the long season when he can be useful. But at the same time, as I already wrote when we signed Xavi - I do think that we could also sell him and use proceeds for player that contributes more and is better fit into how we want to play. Cause as things stand, he is ~30 mil asset that will soon be at best 7th choice to forward-line (after Solanke, Richie, Kolo Muani, Xavi, Kudus, Kulusevski) fighting with 3y younger players like Odobert and Tel, IF (and it is a big if, I admit) they manage to outperform him, he'd be down to 9th choice.

I should imagine the coaching staff have told him many times to get stuck in, to try and beat a man on the outside etc etc. Perhaps he is just incapable of doing these things.

This will be Doncaster’s cup final, they will really be up,for it. Not a game for Johnson.
It’s absolutely the game for BJ - they leave any space behind and he will ruthlessly expose it.

We also need to be rotating, we can get away with a very much changed 11 on Wednesday and then go strong again for 1 of our current bogey teams on Saturday - I’m dreading that game as Wolves are rancid shit, but seem to have our number recently. A loss to them could deflate things

he's a top quality finisher, no doubt about it in my mind. it's just hard to really know were best to play him to maximise his talents. it's certainly not as a left winger. that needs to stop
