Ex-Spurs Player Brennan Johnson

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Disregarding the opposition for a moment; I saw him actually taking on players yesterday. That wasn't in his game before. Even against Tamworth he'd pass backwards. I'm hoping this reflects advice and work put into him from the coaches.

All the Johnson haters (like me) have got what we asked for so there can be no complaints.

The guy will be used against lesser opposition and as a late sub.

The only concern would be injury to Kudus and a prolonged stint of starts for BJ.

Apparently Kulu is back in a couple of months so BJ will be further away from the team. Definitely need to cash in next summer before his stock dips.

He is caught offside a lot when we have lost the bal.

Very rarely his fault, mate..... he is actually one of the best players we have at timing his runs to perfection and more often than not he is offside because others have not released at the optimum time.

Not sure why youre trying to take away from him the things he does well.. its pretty weird .

I was there mate, I literally sat in front of him in the first half and he was largely anonymous.

You've mentioned him in 3 actions in a 90 min match big whoop lol you picking out a few isolated moments is missing the point anyway - where was he for the rest of the match and in other phases of the game?
??....I've picked out 3 of his best moments other than his goal.....there were obviously others!....and you said earlier in the thread you barely watched the game in your hospitality suite?!....🤷‍♂️

he's another lamela where I feel like he has good attributes to be a CF but I must not be getting something as managers just don't try it

- but he absolutely has a particular set of skills

So weird watching this guy play football, don't see him for any part of the match but when he went through on goal I just knew he was going to score, his finishing is up there with the best in the league but his all round game is terrible.

Super sub role for him going forward.
I’d like to see him being braver on the ball and knocking it beyond players and running onto it like we saw last night.

There’s too much passing back which isn’t playing to his strengths.

Away at Woolwich or Chelsea or away at PSG, I could see Frank doing something like this:

Johnson Solanke Kudus
Xavi

The other 3 in that 4 can do all the things Johnson struggles with but the ability to be clinical with every chance you get will be vital in a game like that.

Yea, I don't really see that happening.

I think it is very possible we go with 3 CBs, fullbacks, double-pivot with Xavi in front of them and then front 2.
And in that front 2 Kudus is pretty much nailed on, and for other place it is extremely difficult to see Johnson being picked ahead of Solanke, Richie and Kolo Muani.

Literally as I said - when we play tight games, every player has to contribute a lot to retain and win back possession. We don't want to be on receiving end of attack after attack after attack. Kudus has shown his ability to control, dribble and create things. Solanke and Richie are good at keeping the ball upfield + work extremely hard without it, being physical presence in both boxes. Johnson gives you none of that. So it is balancing act - how much on-the-ball ability are we willing to give away to gain better finishing ability. Have to keep in mind - if we give too much away, ball will never reach Johnson for clinical finish - he is pretty much fully dependent on others creating chances for him.

3 atb would definitely be a possibility that’s fair

I don't agree that when he doesn't score, he is so bad - sometimes that's true but not always.

I am not even saying he should start every week - but he absolutely has a particular set of skills that not many actually possess in the modern game, and he absolutely has a role to play for us.
Last night was the best I’ve seen him which is quite sad. I’m just being honest,it puts me on a downer when I’m at the games and the teams come out and he’s starting. He drives me insane in how little he offers during a game. He can score goals and I think he’s shown to be very good at that. Right place at the right time is a great trait to have but when he doesn’t we are literally playing with ten men. At this level you are fucked if that’s the case.
This argument will rumble on till he’s eventually sold but people need to realise we are not good enough to play with a man down. It only takes another two or three players to be off it that day and you have a guaranteed loss. We are not good enough to carry players. We need better or we’ll always be nearly men.
